Hello Henry; these are super videos. I rode through Butte almost thirty years ago with my brother-in-law (we were heading back from Sturgis SD) and I remember thinking, "What an honest town -- gritty, hard-working, not gentrified. " It has a character that sometimes gets lost when city fathers get carried away with Disney-fying the historic core. I'm enjoying your content; subscribed! Also, recommended to my other brother -in-law for his treadmill sessions.
Thanks! That's a good description of Butte. They often describe themselves as "Butte Tough" which is apt I think. I saw some signs some people are trying to fix up their own little corners but it's tough to do with the economics they have there. They are trying hard though to build something vibrant again. It's a great place to visit for sure. -Henry
This was great. It took me back to the days when I lived in Butte, some of the happiest and most carefree days of my life. I lived in a walkup apartment above Harrington Surgical, which you walk by near the end of your video. I followed the same path you did after that every day because I worked in the building next door. And my hangout was a coffee house at Main and Galena, now an oxygen store which you walked by earlier. Really brings back memories.
Awesome. Thanks so much for sharing that memory. Love hearing about peoples experiences. I imagine it has changed a little bit in someways but also not much and others. All the best. - H
@@draperone371Eddys motel in the 40s. Wow. I've been in Butte for about 25 years. And in Montana for 54 years. I will be 82 this year, so I may be close to your age.
@@draperone371 so nice to hear from someone who is old. like me. And who knows about Butte. It's been so brutally cold here for the past many days that I have not dared to go out. Even to empty the garbage . My car is dead frozen too. So hunkered in here fr days and days. Windchill brutal and has been close to 60 below zero. Think coldest air temp was 45 below. Whatever, this place is one of the coldest places on earth. Including Siberia Alaska, etc.
Great walk again Henry - I love seeing the mountains in the background, they look so impressive! The architecture is very interesting there, so many unique houses and buildings.
So glad you liked it. Yep, Butte is a special place. They are pulling themselves back up after some hard times. Thanks for watching and the comment . -H
8:00 That's my old elementary school on the the left. Mckinley school. Spent 1st and 2nd grades there. It's been converted into a church. Thank you for bringing back my childhood.
Very cool. Love it when locals (pas or present) speak up and share their experiences. Butte is a cool place with a lot of character. Thanks for sharing. -Henry
@CityWalks. Did you know they had been making a movie here in Butte for the past few years? With Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford? I think the name of it is 1923. It made a lot of money for the makers. It is a prequel for the TV series called Yellowstone, with Kevin Costner. I did not like that series. Too violent and full of profanity. It did not show Montana as it really is and was. It was made in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley where I used to live. A gorgeous place.
@CityWalks. I spent about an hour writing you a long comment about my experience living in Butte, Deer Lodge, and many towns in Montana for the past 54 years. Somehow, it was deleted from the comment section. It's probably my fault. Not familiar with this technical mode of communication, I don't have the energy to write it all over again. But I have a lot to share with you that might help you with your walks. I've been in Montana 54 years and have lived and worked in many small Montana towns, 25 years in Butte. I'd love to talk with you. I'm 82 years old this year. And have many Montana stories to tell.
Hah, people joke it can snow in Montana anytime between July 5 and July 4th. But really, probably Mid June through September is fairly safe. Lots of rain and little snow squalls in April and May. -Henry
Virtual, it almost never stops snowing in s.w. Montana. I've seen it snow every month of the year. April is one of the snowy-est. But with climate change, the summers are warmer and longer. It freezes at night almost every month too. It can be cold here at night, all sumer, especially in s.w. Montana.
Glad you enjoyed it. It's a fascinating place with some really interesting history and really interesting culture. Thanks for comemnting. All the best. -H
@@CityWalks In the 40s I lived with my Grandparents in Eddy s motel.. played on the slag till I got caught. Think about it now I could have been cut to shreds Thank you
That IS a hard question. There aren't a lot of proper cities and I haven't been to many of the ones further south. I'd say Bozeman, MT - Jackson, WY - and maybe Boise, ID. Denver is interesting but BIG and Boulder is fun too. Depends on what you are looking for. -Henry
@@CityWalks yea thats what i here from many people boise is up and coming has a long way to go but it also is not as expensive as Denver i live in California and i wanna move but i wanna remain in the western part of the USA like to compare city's.
It is the "Finlan" hotel. Not the Finley hotel. As you said. And the Mineral Museum is fabulous and not judt for kids. As you say. It's beautiful. But an appointment is needed as it's only open at certain times.
Oh, Thanks for that additional info. I love it when people post (kind) corrections and additional information like this. Very much appreciated, especially about the appointment. Keep on steppin' Marjorie! -H
Sounds good! I'd love to. Just need to make the arrangements. :-) We are actually headed back to Europe this summer but not to Rome (at least at this point) but we will be in Scotland, Estonia, and Switzerland so stay tuned for walks in those countries. -Henry
