I'm really glad that they didn't overdo the porgs to much. It wasn't minions levels of porg, like they aren't in every single scene. They are cute and loevable, but don't distract from the whole movie.
And one is killed and roasted over an open fire and then discarded rather than becoming food for a character we love, making its death double pointless. How many minions had that fate?
"Take that ridiculous thing off." To all the kids in the theater wearing Kylo masks, I completely understand why I saw a couple of you toss your masks in the garbage on the way out. The critic that said it all, a 9 or 10 year old kid's reply to his mom when she asked if he liked the movie. "It's stupid." (Tosses mask like Luke showed us how to do with his lightsaber.) Normally I'd think a kid like that is a brat, but I was in the same mood, so I can't judge.
@@NumeMoon old comment I know, but… Snoke is the bad guy? The mask isn’t any more ridiculous than anything else we see people wearing. Snoke is just being a bully.
I, too, was thinking of the reaction gifs in that moment. But I wanna be that guy. If I'm ever in a desperate last stand at the end of the worst week of my life with my closest comrades and surviving buddies, I wanna hope that I'll be prudent enough to take a finger, run it across the floor, stick it in my face-hole, and loudly declare the groundtaste to my fightmates.
It was hilarious to me in the movie when Snoke said he was the one doing the connection, because I pictured him as a rabid ReyLo shipper, just yelling "KISS DAMNIT!"
I pictured him like a guilt ridden parent fretting on the extension knowing they shouldn't be eavesdropping but still unable to hangup. In the background would be the other parent looking on disprovingly, not sure who'd that would be, Hux maybe. The two sitting in the same bed together, Hux reading a magazine while Snoke covers the mouthpeice of the phone and listens in. Some much needed SnUx insight.
Just rewatched the movie and you forgot one bingo square! Kylo Ren DOES cry real tears after he kills Snoke and all the Praetorian guard dudes, when he's talking with Rey. You did better than you thought woot woot
What I'm really perplexed about is Luke's robot arm. Did it ascend to the Jedi afterlife with him? I didn't see that shit fall off along with his robes.
Yeah, but the Light Side of the force usually represents natural forces, compared to the Dark Side which treats technology - particularly prosthesis - as the symbolic corruption of characters. Yoda's staff is wood, formerly a living thing, and furthermore, is not a lost limb. If Anakin Skywalker gets to look like Hayden Christensen when he passes to the Force Afterlife, why doesn't Luke get his arm back, and why does his inorganic, non-living metal arm transcend with him? Just saiyan...
The Autarch I think people get to pick and choose what things they take with them. Anakin abandoned his whole Vader suit and came back as Anakin. Like probably thinks the robot hand is cool so he took it with him.
For some reason i can see jenny being that nerdy girl who's trying to be seductive, but instead of seducing you, just falls off the bed. Which i somehow think is more adorable?
I thought ROS would be bad. I didnt expect it to be as bad as it was, and I definitely didn't expect it to ruin the message of TLJ as well as the message of the entire original trilogy
I just came here after watching your Rise of Skywalker video. The difference in your reactions is actually quite amazing. You're visibly excited by events in TLJ and genuinely disappointed and disgusted by events in TRoS.
I see a few people who appreciate your attitude in the replies. Um... while, in general, I lean towards pessimism but appreciate the value of optimistic people, I try to mostly appreciate their positivity rather than find it annoying, for this thing specifically... nah. Appreciating shitty movies made by uncreative people for a massive company such that it makes billions of dollars rather than tanking and forcing said company to instead hire creative people and leave them alone... it perpetuates the problem. I want everybody to acknowledge that it was shit, and work towards tanking it, so that we can get better movies in the future, instead of continuing to get shitty movies made by hack writers who think they're talented because their incoherent, poorly written and paced stories with shitty characters makes enough money that they aren't forced to acknowledge how shitty and hack-y and untalented they are.
That bit about the Legends books burning and Luke saying 'go to hell Timothy Zahn' had me dying laughing. The sad thing is that some people really feel that was the point of the movie.
No, the reason for these films was to push political agendas because the most powerful people only see Star Wars as a powerful vehicle to use to spread their ideologies. They don’t actually have any reverence or respect for the story, movies, characters, etc.
@@kidwajagstang The original trilogy is about a band of freedom fighters taking down a fascist regime. They're literally called Stormtroopers. Star Wars has ALWAYS been about politics and ideology.
I didn't hate the movie, in fact I liked most of it. There were just specific moments I wasn't big on but I think it would have been a significantly better movie had Rian Johnson directed the entire trilogy with a cohesive style versus the foundation and ending being done by a errr less talented director. The shifts between the 3 movies is a bit jarring and the Force Awaken was a pretty uncreative movie. Rian is a fantastic director and it cannot be easy to just jump into someone else's vision and try and shape it to yours.
the weird director tug-of-war going on between movies really hurt the trilogy I think. It's very strange that the Disney even allowed RJ to ignore the other guys vision for the trilogy like he did. Disney paid a million billion moneys for the rights to Star Wars so you'd think they'd have an iron grip on production.
The Rise of Skywalker is in many ways The Force Awakens' shadow. One is an essentially benign reboot-sequel hybrid, remaking the plot of an older franchise but continuing the broader elements as well. The other is an unnatural twisted expression of malignant fan service.
@@baguettegott3409 I dont think there is a particular disconnect between 7 and 8, i mean, no more than between 4 and 5... I mean, if people like Jenny are able to predict a lot of movie bits, it means it followed pretty standard storytelling conventions. It was a "yes, and!", not a "no, but!" like the rise of skywalker was. I read a lot of fan predictions for episode 8 and a lot of the story beats (kylo and rey's relationship, a downer ending, luke having done something bad to be in exile, etc) are pretty on the ball for a second installment.
It's so surreal seeing this in the immediate aftermath before the hell of the fan response that still won't go away. I remember leaving this movie feeling the same. I thought some was a bit strange but I loved it overall and thought most would think of it at least as an improvement to The Force Awakens. I was not ready for what was about to happen.
@@SeanDSarcasm Well it did take over my TH-cam recommendations bar for like a year no matter how much I tried. So it was definitely an "era" if I wanna be dramatic about it.
Was gonna say it. Yoda tells Luke that Rey is already in possession of those teachings, but it's only at the end of the movie that you learn that it wasn't a figure of speech.
Rey and Kylo bang and the force ghost all watch and look at the camera and Yoda said “this Star Wars been going on for infinity” and the avengers theme plays.
In the middle of the dramatic silence when Admiral Haldo commits suicide, some dude farted. During the entire scene, people were trying to hold in their laughter. RIP Admiral Haldo.
Oh my god one of the YT channels I followed did a "30 things that TLJ did wrong" list and at the begining said how much he loved Rouge One! How did you know?!
@@ARDreamy I don't think that was the point. I think he was actually expanding on the themes of the Prequels. It was pretty explicitly laid out that the Jedi in the Prequels were complacent and arrogant, so they were totally unprepared for everything and Sidious had basically a free ride to the top. I had always gotten that message from them, so having Luke confirm it was more of a validation of Prequel fans than an insult.
Fun fact: my former assistant manager at toys r us is a huge Star Wars fanboy, and he hated the Last Jedi, and he really liked Rogue One... Jenny, you’re on to something. I remember having a conversation with him on the Last Jedi, and I asked him to say something he did like, because we kept going on about what we didn’t like. I finally got him to crack, and he admitted he liked what they did with Kylo Ren’s character. Hey, at least it was something.
Overall I enjoyed it quite a bit. I enjoyed poes arc of learning to be a leader and not be a hot head. The ideas the film presents like whether the goodies and baddies are really that different is quite revolutionary for Star Wars, I wish the film dived a bit deeper into that stuff. Kylo saying "let go of the past" felt like a message to the audience which I liked. My problem though is Rey's arc. Rey throughout the film learns that everything isn't what she thought; her parents aren't important, luke skywalker is a lonely man who thought about killing his nephew and therefore birthed kylo ren. Rey, it feels like is being set up, that it worked so well for her last time it must now, so she goes to ren convinced she will save the day. Turns out she played right into the villains plan and now made ren the new leader, like a son with his dad's nuclear codes. Rey makes quite a lot of mistakes here, but she ignores them and continues on in the falcon. I would have loved to have had a scene or two of her dealing with her fuck ups. At the end of empire luke had lost his hand, his best friend, and had learnt his dad is Vader. Suddenly it's not as simple as he thought, but he's going to keep fighting with these new lessons learnt. Rey doesn't seem much at all affected. Rey feels at best like she is half way through an arc and this trilogy will be properly enjoyed when all 3 films are available. Unlike the original trilogy where all films stood by themselves. Kylo ren once again stole the show for me.
Yeah.... I was never one of those people who said that Rey was a "Mary Sue" or whatever other terms they throw around now but I did start to feel like she got more than a couple of free passes in the movie. Ironically, she's the character I enjoyed the least. I didn't hate her, but Rose, Finn and Poe were a lot stronger characters in this film imo.
She was certainly my least favourite character. She does fit the Mary Sue profile, she is too good at stuff without much reason and in TFA solved most issues by herself and never needed help. This is in contrast to Luke who even at the end of JEDI needed to be saved by his dad. People will throw out Bruce Wayne as a male equivalent but we know how and why he is well versed in many subject to do with fighting crime and on top of that in his origin movie he regularly fails and needs help. In TLJ Rey at the least needed help from Ren and they tried to explain it away as "raw strength" similar to Kylo Ren. Kylo is flawed and has clear struggles and in writing terms is a far more stronger character than Rey. The scene where Rey was in the lift with Ren and it mirrors Luke and Vader from JEDI didn't work for me. I just don't buy Rey would be that sure of her 'Jedi'ness'
There were a few others she missed. Porgs did die because Chewbacca was roasting a few on Luke's planet. Kylo Ren did cry real tears, Snoke looked to be pretty fricking tall (not a giant, but tall), you could argue that the Rebels/Poe shouldn't have trusted Laura Dern because she didn't tell Poe the plan, maybe Rey cut a limb during the fight in Snoke's room, and Rey does swim, she doesn't "learn" how to swim, but she swims.
I appreciate the positive review! I liked that it was a very interesting and fresh movie because nothing can last forever if you don't take risks. They're bringing back Abrams for episode nine, but I hope that he keeps a bit of the style of the Last Jedi.
I picked up on a bit of foreshadowing about Luke on Crait. First of all, Luke isnt making any salt footprints. Secondly, he's using his old blue lightsaber (which doesn't make any sense because Rey has that lightsaber).
That lightsaber is Ben Solo's. That's why Luke threw it away. That's why Han asked Maz were she got it. In the scene you see Luke standing over Ben you can see that Ben's saber is a perfect replica of Anakin's. Kylo Ren even told Rey "That lightsaber is mine."
I didn't pick up on that, although I did notice in retrospect that it was weird how he did all that crazy limbo stuff instead of just blocking Ben's attacks
No Jenny's daftest comedic mussings are still substantially more coherent than this movie is. Oh and my horrible thought for the day is Kylo+Rey just might be inspired by TWILIGHT !!!
Saw this with my friend. She did enjoy it but wasn't nearly as hype as me. Said she had to think on it and sort out how she felt. She said it had a very different feel from past Star Wars. She really likes Rogue One
But the Jedi Texts weren't burned. They were on the Falcon. We saw them at the end when Finn was looking for a blanket. Yoda was correct, Rey had everything she needed :)
"he already learned from Yoda and Obi-Wan that jedi failed in the past and had students turn to the dark side. He would not have gone into a 15 year depression and blamed himself for that long because he lost a student" My friend he was ALONE. In a huge universe he was the ONLY jedi. And he didn't really have experience with this turning to the dark side thing, he only "heard" of it. He was not only full of hubris, but the responsibility fell super heavy on his shoulders. He had no one to help him, and only himself to blame. Plus it was not any student, it was his nephew; he feels he failed the Jedi, himself, Leia, Han, the universe... "Rey ... with no training was able to pick up a lightsaber in the Force Awakens and make a trained fighter look like a fool". As Snoke mentioned in this movie, he did look like a fool but then again he was broken by having killed his father. This thing about "let the past die" is what he MUST tell himself to justify everything he has gone through. Plus, Rey was pretty much the only light side force user, like Snoke said, darkness rises and light to meet. Force was channeled into her pretty strongly that is why she displayed such strength, she was overflowing with the force.
Bud you can be a Star Wars bitter, butthurt hater all you want. The problem is somewhere along the way your suspension of disbelief cracked and you can't put it back together; since you do not take the movie at its word, and you do not assume it's telling you a story in good faith, it doesn't matter anymore what anyone says. Rey has always fought well, albeit with a staff, because she had to learn how to take care of herself in Jakku. We see as much in TFA. She just adapted her style to lightsaber, plus there's the awakened force itself. Also, to say Rey fought better than Kylo is just your opinion, which I find weird (but then again, it is explained by the fact that you don't trust the story anymore and will find any reason to dislike it); Kylo fought more adversaries at once than her and didn't get injured as she did. Another example of the fact that you simply don't trust the movie: yeah, Snoke was killed. This is not contradictory (Snoke wasn't all that great), but rather telling (Kylo became GREATER). Luke: he was young. Yes, he felt alone and yes, he almost was brought to the dark side, but this experience is nothing like being a master yourself and having a student turn. They are very different things and contexts. About the humor, well, it's very subjective, I won't argue that. So, in general, you're falling prey (or using) the fallacy of numerical superiority (yeah, sure there's 1 good review for every 15 bad ones, only people who hate it are motivated to waste their times bashing it. Don't be ridiculous) and being really arrogant about this whole thing (reviewer agrees with me and doesn't like the movie = intelligent review). Ugh.
Angry Drunken German It makes her really human and fascinating a character to me. She's been obsessing about her family for years when deep down she knows they probably never really cared about her. Also it's such a clever subversion of the 'chosen one' trope. It shows you don't have to come from an important family to be a hero. To me it's one of those storytelling decisions that are shocking but at the same time you're like "of course it makes so much sense". But, you know, that's just my opinion.
The fact that she's not special is what makes her a Mary Sue. When you look back at the prequels you see Anakin the exact same way. He was a male Mary Sue. And it's horrible writing, but some excused it because of Lucas saying "he was created by manipulating bla bla bla." It was a crap excuse then and it's a crap excuse now. Only now there's not even a lame excuse...
A Mary Sue is an idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character. Often, this character is recognized as an author insert or wish fulfillment. They can usually perform better at tasks than should be possible given the amount of training or experience. Sometimes, the name is reserved only for women, but more often the name is used for both genders. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue It's basically an OP person that has no reason for being great other than the creator wants them to be for selfish reasons.
"Rey and her friends are separated for most of the movie, so we basically have two movies that are stuck together" in other words it's The Empire Strikes Back again
You don't fly in space, you float. You literally only need a push to move indefinitely in space, as opposed flying - in which you need a constant force to keep flying. Hey, what was the most basic usage of the force again? Oh, right, pushing and pulling. But hey, Leia has only been confirmed to be force sensitive since The Empire Strikes back, so it's completely out of left field for her to be able to use the force to do a simple push/pull after having lived most of her life surrounded by family members who can use the force proficiently.
It makes sense that a force user could "fly" in space, but it makes no sense that she wasn't immediatly killed in space. Space is -270 degrees C, and it's a vacuum. Your eyeballs would explode and your skin would freeze solid and tear off the second you were exposed to it. If force users can survive in space "because of the force" then they might as well be able to jump into molten lava or take blaster shots to the face, either of which would be less deadly than floating around in space.
I thought this film was a fantastic middle chapter. When it works, it REALLY works. I loved watching our younger characters learning to lose. Poe, Finn, Rey kept constantly thinking they could just will their way forward if they believed and tried hard enough (Rey thinking she just go convince Kylo to turn, Poe ignoring orders and losing all the bomber ships, Poe and Finn's failed plan to deactivate the tracker, Finn going full speed ahead at the cannon even though there was no way he was deactivating it). After watching things just ultimately work out for them in TFA, it was great to see them lose and react to that failure. My biggest complaint was that there wasn't enough consequence to their hubris. Dozens and dozens of faceless Rebels die as a result of their plans, but it's hard to feel the weight of that when we have no attachment. I personally loved the revelation that Rey's parents are nobody. Any other reveal would've been underwhelming and cliche in my opinion (i.e. having her be Leia and Han's long lost daughter, or be Luke's long lost daughter, etc). Plus it gives off that great Spider-Man-esque theme of ordinary people stepping up, doing the right thing, becoming heroes. It could've been anyone who was granted that power. And she ultimately has to chose to be apart of this. Not because her parents are or an ancient jedi master told her it's her destiny but because it's the right thing, much like Finn. The choice is an essential part of the hero's journey. Luke made the choice (granted even had the knowledge Darth Vader "killed" his father) But Rey has to make it with no ties to any of it. And people saying Rey is a Mary Sue....uh... yeah kind of, but what do you want? Do you want to see montages of her training for months? Do you want her to have been training for years before the story? I mean, there's no pleasing anyone. I always viewed her unlikely aptitude as the force rising up to balance Kylo and the sith, as Snoke stated. There's a lot of little moments of deus ex machina in this film, but it was so fun and such a great middle chapter that I didn't mind so much. Anyway, I loved this movie, I haven't even touched on the visuals either, and they're one of its greatest strengths. And plus there were no climatic light-saber battles. No Ren vs Rey. They're saving all that. You don't need light-saber rivalries to make a great Star Wars movie, we all know that by now.
I have to be an anomaly, because I really liked Rouge One and LOVED The Last Jedi :). Also, nice point about Yoda! My theory is that he was corrupted by the Jedi... society :). After spendnig 20 years on Dagobah, he becomes much closer to the Force and his inner self. He becomes a person again, with full colors, regains his sense of humor and his particular weirdness, losing this Jedi seriousness and stagnation. TLJ reinforces that. He doesn't give a crap about those boring books :) Your video made me relive how I felt about this movie at the cinema. Thanks!
After the prequel trilogy and the adequate and inoffensive _Force Awakens,_ we finally saw what a creative and skilled writer/director could do with _Star Wars._ That hadn’t happened since 1980. I think fans just gave up expecting these movies to be great and they clearly had no idea what to do with it when it happened except pine for mediocrity again.
@@sircaptaintm4983 _The Last Jedi_ is the best _Star Wars_ movie from every angle you care to look at it. Its plot is more satisfying, its visuals more unforgettable, the action more dire, the deaths more meaningful, the effects more spectacular, the writing more insightful, the comedy more relieving, the heroism more striking and the themes more compelling than anything before it. (To balance the Force, the cinematic follow-up is the ridiculous parody of _Rise of Skywalker,_ a mindless, lazy pastiche of all the worst banalities that _Last Jedi_ entertainingly exorcized.) If you hated _The Last Jedi,_ you love _Star Wars_ for all the wrong reasons. I am still so disturbed by the response from self-described “fans.” Episode VIII has a character and a vision that apparently had no place in the Skywalker saga-it was _too good._ It is the only movie from any of the trilogies that fully delivers and surpasses the cinematic promise of _The Empire Strikes Back._ It made me love this franchise again and believe that the best _Star Wars_ stories have yet to be told. I am still willing to give _Star Wars,_ regardless of the production company, the chance to redeem itself. If we have to wade through tedious and unnecessary origin stories and prequels and series to find another gem like _Last Jedi,_ I think it’s worth it. That galaxy is still rich with potential for imaginative filmmakers willing to take _risks_ to find them.
Bolek Lolek It was the opposite of that! Snoke is the great villain. He's the unstoppable mastermind behind the First Order. Then Kylo Ren murders him, turning the movie on its head. I thought it was such a clever plot twist that made the film completely unpredictable. And believe me I prefer a movie with an exciting and unpredictable story than one where they keep every character alive because they're afraid fans might run off if something too unexpected happens.
xGhostCat, I was really hoping she was gonna cut Ben's hand off when he offered it to her. He's got that Skywalker blood; the prominent male in each generation has gotta lose a hand at some point, that's just what Skywalkers do.
Personally I only had two major complains about the movie, one was the way they handled and wrote Rose in general, and the other was that one scene where Leia basically flies through space. That scene really did strike me as poorly executed. But yeah, this movie was really fun! And some scenes were not only good but downright amazing.
DrZaious to be fair I wasn't complaining about the technicalities behind the scene but it's execution. It just looked terrible and definitely destroyed my suspension of disbelief. I'm sure they could've done it better because literally everyone in the theater laughed or groaned, and then everybody I've talked to claims to have really disliked that scene
Returning to this review 2 years after TLJ came out I actually had to check the release date to see if the division in the fanbase had begun yet because when Jenny said "most people who won't like it will probably complain about it being too long" is either so blissfuly ignorant of the toxicity or Star Wars fans or an epic trolling line.
I think she was genuinely unaware, like noone would have expected it was as bad as it was. Like some of it was always going to happen, because star wars fans hate most new things, but noone could have predicted that such a great movie would be so controversial.
Alex Turlais yeah based on when this review came out (and some of the comments she’s made about TLJ in other videos) I do think she was unaware of what would become of the discourse around the movie. It does kind of blow your mind to go back and watch the reviews prior to the backlash just because people were so straight forward with their opinions and not trying to pander to the other side at all.
@@alexturlais8558 I mean, Mark Hamill was pretty aware it took a strong turn and was saying as much beforehand IIRC. But I think that got lost all the same cuz disney was like "hey. stop that. bad mark"
It's just that the loud minority of toxic fans has found ways of being REALLY loud, unfortunately. Most people said "it's alright" and went on with their lives.
ThePaintingBanjo I thought that too! As I don't really believe in psychic powers, I wondered if the film writers were watching her videos. Well why not, you've got to get your ideas from somewhere!
Do we know Jenny's last name what if she's really a Kennedy or a Johnson I even got a far out there Theory it could be Lucas. I have many Jenny parent fan theories.
I don't think you're giving your bingo card enough credit, and I'm going to argue for a few squares: Ugly Dangerous Monster - I think you should count the enormous crocodile-looking sea-nightmare. They have it in the background on the island, but you also see it's skeleton underwater, when Rey struggles to swim. Rey Learns to Swim - She did look pretty panicked and out of sorts when she fell into the water. What are the chances she's ever swan before, living on Jaaku? I would give yourself this one. Snoke is 7 1/2 Feet tall - he looked about that to me. It's hard to know for sure, because he didn't stand next to anyone normal, but he looked significantly taller than Kylo, who is NOT small. Grey Rey - I think you should take your free space too. As Luke pointed out, she went straight for the dark. It does seem to end with her determined to bring back the Jedi, but without the structure of the Jedi religion trying to control her her, I imagine she'll be left to her own inclinations, which are decidedly grey. Somebody Dances - Okay, I honestly can't remember anything specific, but I feel like there has got to be dancing at that casino, somewhere.

Best scene for me: Luke passes to the Skywalker Theme in the glow of a binary sunset. That scene was really appreciated by myself. It was a full circle character arc that took 40 years to close.
@@ForNoOne1 Maybe him looking out for purpose into the sunset and him finishing his journey and adventure in front of a similar sunset is supposed to show that the hope that inspired him is still alive. Finding out that Ray's parents were just some junk traders as great. Turns out that when she said she was "no one" in The Force Awakens, that was foreshadowing.
Not too far fetched DrZaious, except that we've never seen a person propel themselves with the force before. We've only seen them manipulate other objects. She wasn't necessarily using some sort of force shield either. We humans haven't done experiments to confirm this, but we can probably survive the vacuum of space for a number of seconds. I'm so glad the movie didn't show her frozen solid or something like a lot of films do. Heat dissipation takes time in a vacuum, dammit!
QwertyByte what are you talking about? In episode I they use the force to go really fast and in all the prequels Jedi use the force to jump really high
Albee213 I think it only worked because it was a cruiser-class ship being rammed into the dreadnaught(?), and thus it would be counter-intuitive and extremely expensive to pull off continuously.
Yeah that was my guess too, that it was because of the size and mass of the ship that the shockwaves created by warping spacetime had such a big effect, so wasting that much money on the construction of something with that much size and mass doesn't seem cost-effective, especially not for the rebels. At the very least though they should look into how to do a kamikaze warp like that remotely, without having to sacrifice anybody in the event that it's their only option.
Yes, they used a huge expensive cruiser to do it, but it utterly obliterated and ripped the entire dreadnaught in half. That means they could use a much smaller, cheaper ship, and it would still cause massive damage (even if that isn't enough to rip a dreadnaught in half, it would still cripple a larger opponant) Also, even if we pretend that it only is effective if a large cruiser does it... during the Death Star battles, the Rebels had large cruisers just as large as the one in this movie. When they were scared the Death Star was about to blow up Yarvin IV, why didn't send one of their same size large cruisers right into the Death Star's weapon? If it could rip a Dreadnaught in half, it would have at the very taken out a huge chunk of the Death Star.
I have just seen it and i don't know if i ever was so excited in the cinema. Starting from the moment when Rey and Kylo entered Snoke's chamber i was just moving my legs up and down from adrenaline. I think it was a little bit too long and i felt Rose wasn't very interesting, i felt no chemistry between her and Finn. I had tears in my eyes when Luke died. By the way, my number one wish for the final episode is to see Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan and Hayden Christensen as Anakin.
Great review, totally spot on w/ the issues (too long, weird pacing, the ship chase being a wacky concept but hey go w/ it). The overall character growth and surprises far outweigh the problems. LOL at Kylo Run and Hux running the government, Kylo showing up to work w/ a mask, and Kylo being almost killed twice while he slept HA. So far she's totally correct about Star Wars people who don't like it too LOL
I love that this was done before the inernet started collectively whinging, so we all get to remember how awesome it was when we first saw TLJ and not have to engage with the lame fanboy criticisms of it. I was convinced it was going to be known retrospectively as a classic.
"so we all get to" As a member of the unqualified "we," I have to say... speak for yourself. I disliked this movie a lot. I can only remember bits and pieces of why I disliked it. I know I didn't like how Poe's arc played out, or... anything at all about the lady with the purple(I think) hair... or anything about Rose. I also have no idea how one acquires the "lame fanboy" label. Is it not liking the movie? Did I do it?
I think the majority of people didn't like it. I remember me and the two friends I watched it with coming out of the cinema very disappointed in it. And most of the fan reviews I read right after that were pretty negative. It's just not a very interesting movie IMO, certainly not one I'd want to rewatch. Yoda was very good though.
I liked it but the whole thing that the republic, which is made up of thousands of planets, is somehow dead because the first order blew up three planets is BS. The empire in the originals was weak because nobody really enjoyed having them around and they had to use the brute force from inheriting the republics military to keep order. Where does the first order, a well equipped but small military group, suddenly get the resources to take on the whole galaxy? This world of first order vs resistance was weak in the force awakens but it literally makes no sense in this movie.
Jumbo Jango It always has, now you mention it, I think TLJ and TFA give it a bit of size but not much, but like all that really existed in the OT was Tattooine, the outer rim, alderaan and tosche station.
Man, star wars would definately be more fun if instead of the "bad guys" destroying a few of the main planets for dramatic effect, they instead showed you a 1 hour scene of them blowing up thousands of planets. Definately adds more to the whole "good vs evil" main plot.
nothing wrong with adding new characters but they have to be balanced, which they arent (rey and finn had the same reaction to every single event that happened in the force awakens which is a big no no is story writing, look at han and luke in the original for balanced character writing), and the events that take place in the story have to be based on some sort of logic or world you have taken the time to build, which it isnt since even Mark Hamill who has been a part of the world for 40 years doesnt understand rian's writing choices for the character of Luke Skywalker. You also seem to have characters and their development confused with the development of the world in which you place them. Both very different elements of the story writing process. You can believe whatever you want but the new movies will never be the timeless classics that the originals are
One of my closest friends is a huge SW fan & we like to throw shade at each other using TLJ as a measure of our movie taste. I personally think that, although not perfect, it's the best SW movie we've had. They hate the movie & i'm almost certain they liked Rogue One, so that cracked me up real good! I will definitely be throwing that question in the mix the next time the shading begins.

I love that guy.
And he didn’t blow anyone’s whistles!
I'd argue that if they _had_ distracted from the rest of the movie it would have been a positive thing.
I like the way Jenny didn't overdo the porgs as well.

I prefer to think that Kylo started a trend. Nobody wore a mask before him and Snoke fucking hated when everybody suddenly started To wear one

What I'm really perplexed about is Luke's robot arm. Did it ascend to the Jedi afterlife with him? I didn't see that shit fall off along with his robes.
The Autarch lolololol
If that’s was the case then ghost yoda wouldn’t have his cane
I think it be cool if what happened was he actually transported himself somewhere.

Not gonna lie. The compilation of your correct predictions is a little spooky.
At this rate, Jenny'll have basically written the script for Episode XII by the time Episode X is in theatres.
Less "spooky" and more like they let the Internet write the plot, since everything in it basically became a parody version of itself.

No, the reason for these films was to push political agendas because the most powerful people only see Star Wars as a powerful vehicle to use to spread their ideologies. They don’t actually have any reverence or respect for the story, movies, characters, etc.

@@kidwajagstang politics like what?
Completely agreed

Claverleykid1 I disagree that Rey is unaffected.
I enjoyed when Leia shot Poe. I couldn't stop laughing. 🤣
Yes, Poe ended up causing the deaths of hundreds of people and executed a mutiny but all is forgiven. Great character arc.
I'm only a casual Star Wars fan, but I could listen to Jenny talk about it for hoouuurrss
4:07 Rogue One did get a shoutout, Garreth Edwards, the director was the guy next to the guy who said "It's salt," after touching the ground on Crait
Wouldn't that be crait bud
There were a few others she missed. Porgs did die because Chewbacca was roasting a few on Luke's planet. Kylo Ren did cry real tears, Snoke looked to be pretty fricking tall (not a giant, but tall), you could argue that the Rebels/Poe shouldn't have trusted Laura Dern because she didn't tell Poe the plan, maybe Rey cut a limb during the fight in Snoke's room, and Rey does swim, she doesn't "learn" how to swim, but she swims.
I knew this face was familiar! thanks

But... Snoke was pretty tall...
Ludmila Marešová andy serkis said he's like 9 feet tall.
His lightsaber scorched crop top would make an acceptable shirt.
I picked up on a bit of foreshadowing about Luke on Crait. First of all, Luke isnt making any salt footprints. Secondly, he's using his old blue lightsaber (which doesn't make any sense because Rey has that lightsaber).
Nater
And it just broke. Cool that you mentioned the foot prints. I didn't realise that!
I didn't pick up on that, although I did notice in retrospect that it was weird how he did all that crazy limbo stuff instead of just blocking Ben's attacks
that's not what foreshadowing means

Anybody else think maybe Rian Johnson just stole all the ideas for the movie from Jenny?
Well.. he follows her on Twitter. So there's that.
Gotta love sarcasm...now that's a kind of humor that works on Star Wars.
No Jenny's daftest comedic mussings are still substantially more coherent than this movie is.
Oh and my horrible thought for the day is Kylo+Rey just might be inspired by TWILIGHT !!!
I didnt see Rey shooting lightnings as Palpatine and Poe didnt randomly get his leg cut off... so no, Rian is blind and deaf to Jenny's wisdom
Hmmm... I sense a decent conspiracy in the making. We just have to ignore all the things Jenny got wrong.
PlasmaX Luke taught her three lessons ... although for some reason we only saw two
"he already learned from Yoda and Obi-Wan that jedi failed in the past and had students turn to the dark side. He would not have gone into a 15 year depression and blamed himself for that long because he lost a student"
My friend he was ALONE.
Ugh.
It is obvious to me upon watching the end of this video that Rian Johnson is a Jenny Nicholson fan.
He does. He likes many of her tweets.

Rey's parents being jerks was one of my favorite parts
Why?
And it's horrible writing, but some excused it because of Lucas saying "he was created by manipulating bla bla bla."
It was a crap excuse then and it's a crap excuse now. Only now there's not even a lame excuse...
Angry Drunken German i'm sorry what's a mary sue?
A Mary Sue is an idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character. Often, this character is recognized as an author insert or wish fulfillment. They can usually perform better at tasks than should be possible given the amount of training or experience. Sometimes, the name is reserved only for women, but more often the name is used for both genders.

in other words it's The Empire Strikes Back again
In more ways than you realize.
Man after watching this movie I was so excited to see Episode 9 and ugh
no the biggest thing everyone will talk about is that scene with leia flying in space back to ship.
Nope. That's not how exposure in space works.
Look up Jim Leblanc 1966.

Plus killing off Phasma was worth it to hear Finn say "Rebel Scum." oooh that as great.
Thanks!
I liked both movies to 😊
I also really enjoyed both.
Best comment I've seen all day.
The Throne Room scene was so spectacular I loved it
Yeah especially when they killed off Snoke like he was a nobody.
Carlos it was even better the first time, at the end of Return of The Jedi
Did anyone else think that Snoke's outfit in that scene made him look like Goldmember from the third Austin Powers movie?
What a fucking disaster that whole scene was.
I didn't really love Last Jedi, but I love how much you enjoy it, and it makes me want to watch it again.
The BOOKS were on the falcon at the end btw!!!
Also on her bingocard Kylo did shed A tear. She did put tears lol!
Also the Limb cut thing was close too as Rey cut a guys head off!
xGhostCat, I was really hoping she was gonna cut Ben's hand off when he offered it to her. He's got that Skywalker blood; the prominent male in each generation has gotta lose a hand at some point, that's just what Skywalkers do.
Shaun Cheah yeah honestly I fully expected her to ignite the lightsaber through Kylo's hand during their force tug of war match.
I expected her to mention this...
Personally I only had two major complains about the movie, one was the way they handled and wrote Rose in general, and the other was that one scene where Leia basically flies through space. That scene really did strike me as poorly executed. But yeah, this movie was really fun! And some scenes were not only good but downright amazing.
Juan Pablo Corredor Lieah shielded herself in the force and pulled herself towards the ship using the force. I wouldn't really call it flying.
But I think that got lost all the same cuz disney was like "hey. stop that. bad mark"
@@tlozfreak888 yeah Mark did say that he knew it was controversial, but I'm not sure anyone could have predicted how controversial it ended up being.
It's just that the loud minority of toxic fans has found ways of being REALLY loud, unfortunately. Most people said "it's alright" and went on with their lives.
I love Jenny's soothing voice.
Either Disney's Star Wars writers are taking notes of Jenny's early predictions, or she might as well be just psychic. Because holy shit.
Yeah when I first saw the Force Awakens I thought her parents abandoned her. I didn't know where everyone got the protection idea.
I don't think you're giving your bingo card enough credit, and I'm going to argue for a few squares:
Ugly Dangerous Monster - I think you should count the enormous crocodile-looking sea-nightmare.
13:42 "Like if you can't say something nice don't say anything. Which is a funny approach to take to like a product made by a large studio." -- Flash forward to 2024 to Jenny giving the ultimate Disney product takedown
i missed the last half of what you said because I was so distracted by your right arm struggling with a giant porg
When I saw Kylo Ren shirtless I knew that this was the best Star Wars movie.
I want that juicy porg meat.
Holy shit was that a Red Letter Media reference!?!?
I saw a RLM reference and I clapped!
That cooked porg looked fucking tasty
Slow down, we hardly know each other... things are moving too fast.
We all know when the camera panned away, Chewie chowed down on that juicy porg pork.
Best scene for me:
Luke passes to the Skywalker Theme in the glow of a binary sunset.
That scene was really appreciated by myself. It was a full circle character arc that took 40 years to close.
Fikash yeah I think that’s how visual storytelling works
@@ForNoOne1 Maybe him looking out for purpose into the sunset and him finishing his journey and adventure in front of a similar sunset is supposed to show that the hope that inspired him is still alive. Have you ever seen a movie before where they don't tell you every single meaning in a voice-over?
@@demongoose666 I don't understand your argument. So the guy pointed out that it was poorly done visual storytelling. Why did you point out that it was visual storytelling? It sounds like you believe that because its visual storytelling it couldn't have been done poorly. But that doesn't make any sense.
@@Maloman05 "Have you ever seen a movie before where they don't tell you every single meaning in a voice-over?"
Im pretty sure the scene had a voice-over of someone yelling as loudly as possible "THIS SHOULD INITIATE AN EMOTIONAL RESPONSE".
I think it might have been like a dog whistle that only worked on people with an IQ above 90.
@@Maloman05 If there is some voice over: "what are we. stupid?". If there isn't any voice over "What? Luke just vanished without explanation? did he learn to fly hyperspeed now? This movie is so dumb"
People getting upset about spoilers when there are spoiler warnings LOL
Do a video "Top 10 worst reasons you didn't like TLJ"
Carlos 😂
PLEASE JENNY
Definitely "it had women and black people, therefore a Marxist plot"
THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS
Yes! PLEASE!
Watching this and remembering the good ol days 😭💛
Yoda's quote was the highlight of the film for me. Something to the effect of "We are the thing they grow past."
Honestly that line absolutely blew my mind
that is the true burden of a master
We are what they grow beyond
Edgy
Page Turner's they are not
Finding out that Ray's parents were just some junk traders as great. Turns out that when she said she was "no one" in The Force Awakens, that was foreshadowing.
0:04 Oh my god YOU’RE SO CUTE JENNY STOP 😂🥰
real😊😊
Leia Poppins makes me want to see this, but I'm scared I'll burst out into laughter
Yeah, it's fucking hard to take seriously. Like force powers, cool, but she literally just flies in space like nothing.
Oliver Aelius hahah it did look like mary poppins yall
Ryan Johnson Lieah literally uses a force shield and pulls her self towards the ship. Not too far fetched or silly, in my opinion.
My whole theater was audibly going "OH SHIT" during the silent moment of the light-speed ship-ram.
Johnzilla That’s quite possibly my favorite scene in the whole saga.
If that would work, why wouldn't you just made weapons that do that.
That means they could use a much smaller, cheaper ship, and it would still cause massive damage (even if that isn't enough to rip a dreadnaught in half, it would still cripple a larger opponant)
Also, even if we pretend that it only is effective if a large cruiser does it... during the Death Star battles, the Rebels had large cruisers just as large as the one in this movie. When they were scared the Death Star was about to blow up Yarvin IV, why didn't send one of their same size large cruisers right into the Death Star's weapon? If it could rip a Dreadnaught in half, it would have at the very taken out a huge chunk of the Death Star.
this video is a time capsule of assumed peace.
"so we all get to"
As a member of the unqualified "we," I have to say... speak for yourself.
@@Mythraen I think its more like we who all liked it.
Edward Brink they blew their capital planets, destroying the fleets and making conquest easy
You can believe whatever you want but the new movies will never be the timeless classics that the originals are
The movie doesnt make sense. It is made for stupid teens.
I was almost as excited to watch this video as soon as I finished The Last Jedi as I was to actually see The Last Jedi.
