It was my first too. Mine wound up being stolen by some meth head I was stupid enough to try to start a band with (I didnt realize he was a methhead yet, as i was like 16 years old and pretty naive). Then I got a DX7 lol
This is my second keyboard I had ! First one was the famous Yamaha DX7, but I loved U-20 and used it for 15 years ! I began to compose music after I bought the U20 . The Brass section with chord mode way incredibly !! The heavy guitar sound was a dream at this time, also the choir was amazing sound .. loved it realy
I owned the Roland U-20 for over twenty years. The on-board piano and synth sounds are very good. The on-board great Rhodes sample is in a class by itself even by any standard. I gigged a lot with it and the parts were wearing out. I got rid of it after I got an XP80. The fidelity goes higher in the upper bandwidth. U20 is 44.1K sampling. XP80 (jv-80 sound) sampled at 36K. But keep in mind that the higher sample rate does not directly mean you will sound better and make better music or get better gigs. And you need to be aware that the midi timing gets horribly sluggish when multi tones are triggered. For e.g.- the Rhodes patch is a two velocity multi strike. The sound is superb. But when you hold the pedal and play larger chords the delay get unbearable. Fewer notes is ok. And, this is an internal midi bottleneck issue, and not just the keyboard. So midi in data will still get bottle necked with larger chords.
Since you're experienced with this thing, maybe you can help me? I just got one of these after my stepfather found it in a car he took in place of payment. Is there a way to run this thing as an analog synth or a pure sine-wave keyboard?
Anyone know how to access "Acoustic Piano 1"??? I've dug my U20 out of the loft after 20 years and forgotten how to program it, I've got the manual but it is possibly the most confusing one on the planet... It seems to default to Acoustic Piano 2, 4 or 10, I seem to remember Piano 1 was the one I preferred, 2, 4 and 10 all sound too bright...
I've repaired that issue, and it's shockingly easy. Open it up, and clean the contacts with a q-tip and some distilled water. It's also possible to fix the aftertouch.
@@officialWWMso GTFOH or tell me, what's a guitarist? As keyboarders we play a whole Orchestra, Grand Pianos included. Guitar is just a very limited and minor part of it. Not truly important for us. They are not bad guitar sounds, last year I bought a U-220 which is basically the module version. The mute guitar sound still holds up well even today ( I prefer this over the Roland JV's mute guitar ). I also have the Electric Guitar PCM card and those sounds are also still decent sounding I put them through an amp simulation and nobody would be any the wiser. The steel guitar? even that one is OK for finger picking style but I prefer the JV acoustic guitars as they are a bit more natural sounding.
Que tal amigo estos efectos me sirven para usarlos con el programa Reason por medio de un controlador MIDI, o manejas algunos para usarlos de esta manera? Gracias
General MIDI is just a list of what the sounds (and CCs, etc) "should be" (program 1 should sound like an acoustic piano, program 22 should sound like an accordian, etc). There's no accompanying samples, those are up to the individual manufacturer during implementation. So "GM samples" is about as descriptive as saying "CD songs".
Yes, just because the majority of people claim they sound "outdated" doesn't mean they are not good. Last year I bought a U-220 which is basically the U-20 in the form of a 1U rack module. It's never "too late" to buy anything that's made by Roland. I don't think these sounds are anywhere near as bad as many people seem to make out.
Not a workstation, doesn't have sequencer. As synth, you don't get tons of flexibility to create your own sound. It's more preset samples player than anything else.
@@naiburu9318 No, it's really a sample player, it has no filter, drum kit is not complete. The best think you can do is stack sounds in multi mode but then polyphony evaporates quickly. But the sound is really of good audio quality and samples were really extremely careful made, as you can hear.

It has no filters. Timbre is 6 parts, so maybe you can assign some sine wavers and tune them to organ draw bars.

No, these keys were produced from 1989 to 1992. But you can use it through midi-usb adapter or audio interface with midi in and out.
