  • Jehan Alain (1911 - 1940), 3 Etudes
    Performed by Daniel Fuchs
00:00 - No. 1 Étude de sonorité sur une double pédale (1930)
01:45 - No. 2 Étude sur les doubles notes (1930)
    03:25 - No. 3 Étude sur un thème de 4 notes (1929)
Jehan Alain was born on February 3, 1911 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye near Paris, into a musical family.
His father, Albert Alain (1880-1971), a pupil of Guilmant and Vierne, was an organist and a composer of religious music. His brother, Olivier, and his two sisters, Marie-Odile and Marie-Claire were also to become musicians and organists.
From the age of thirteen, Jehan Alain was his father's assistant as organist in his native town. At the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, he was the pupil of André Bloch, Georges Caussade, Paul Dukas, Roger Ducasse and Marcel Dupré. He won first prizes for harmony, counterpoint and fugue, organ and improvisation. His Suite pour orgue was awarded a first prize in composition in the competition of Les Amis de l'Orgue in 1936. In that same year, he was appointed titular organist of Saint-Nicolas in Maisons-Laffite.
Throughout his short life he never ceased to compose for the piano, the organ, chamber music and voices (soloists and choirs) and the orchestra. His catalog comprises more than 140 works. His Litanies are in organists' repertory the world over.
Mobilised in 1939, in full creativity, he died in action on June 20, 1940 in the defence of Saumur. He was twenty-nine years old.

Superb! Masterpieces from a young composer, the WW2 took him, what a shame!

Wow. I adore the organ music of Alain. So to discover he also wrote piano music is awesome. The 1st is an more lively version of his Berceuse sur 2 notes qui cornent (Basicly his old home organ had 2 notes that stuck and played an organpoint) sweet piece

A fusion of Debussy and Rachmaninoff taken to a new level. Extremely - and unexpectedly - enjoyable. What an executant he must have been!

great, such an unheard of harmonic tone, very fluffy and fur-like sound.

Nice to hear a composer, mostly known for his organ compositions, also getting some recording from his other compositions.

Killed in battle at the age of 29, singlehandedly taking down 16 of the enemy with him.
    What a badass.

Another tragic war casualty I'd never heard of. I could say "What a waste," but it will just go on forever. It's unchangeable human nature.

+olla-vogala Gave his piano works a listen a few days ago and these etudes stuck out to me the most! He has such a unique voice for the instrument!

Truly unique, and PROFOUNDLY so indeed, not just odd as some might think, and not just for the piano. Nearly all I know of his works are those for organ, yet I've heard SOME for other instruments, hearing his intriguing, beguiling, captivating, personal trademark sonorities in each, though I'm far too incompetent musically to express their comprehension in formal, standard, recognizable music theory terminology, just aural recognition. Music publishing being driven largely by profit I suppose it would be too much to hope someone would be devoted to recording ALL of his works for ALL instruments for such a niche market
(being human, he has a few seeming duds, as even Mt. Everest Johann Sebastian Bach did, no matter),
especially now that his champion sister Marie-Claire is passed, but one can hope. As with other prophetic geniuses, the world continually shows it was and is not worthy of him in view of its massive squalor, not just in music, but certainly there hugely too. Sigh. I wonder what paths his children have followed, if any took up his music mantle, a challenging path in view of the world-wide adulation.

Google "jehan alain 3 etudes" (sans quotation marks), click on the third result from IMSLP.org (L'Oeuvre de piano (Alain, Jehan)) and download Tome 1 PDF. Go to page 2. Note the instruction at the bottom of the page for this etude: "The author recommends transposing up one half step."
Therefore, per the composer, either in the designated key or one semi-tone above is still perfectly correct, neither is wrong, and everybody should get used to hearing it in both forms as the composer designated. :)

Yeah, I don't take issue with that... It's just that it makes following the score harder, that's all. :p

Christopher Mansi maybe it's easier to play one half time higher, because playing on black keys is much easier
