Welcome back, great reaction. The 'Gimme Chocolate' video you watched had the studio audio dubbed over the live performance footage, so everything you heard in that was the studio recording including the over-processed vocals. The performance itself had pre-recorded instrumentals, as you were told, but the vocals were live.
This one was ALL live - vocals, instrumentals, crowd singing (not all of them in tune). So yes, the mix was different - they are so much better live without all the over-processing done in the studio recordings.
This video was from January 2015 at the Saitama Super Arena. Su was 17, Yui and Moa only 15 and that was over 20,000 people completely under their control. Even at that age Su just looks at the crowd, spreads her arms and the crowd opens up for a wall of death (ie they separate and as the music starts they charge at each other from either side).
This was also the end of a 90 minute concert - they had been keeping that same energy up without any drop in quality for the whole time. It is what they do - they appreciate people have often paid a lot of money and travelled a long way to see them, they never give anything less than 100% for every song at every concert, whether that is one of their big arena concerts in Japan or at the many various sized venues as they tour the world.
About the song itself - and you were getting the main message. 'Road of Resistance' is a very positive song, it isn't the usual "resist the machine or the system etc" that we might expect from the title. It is about forging your own road even where a road doesn't already exist, not necessarily going the easy way or following the path already made by somebody else, so if the way you want to go has never been trodden you may have to get past the resistance of the undergrowth, obstacles, hurdles and things blocking your way etc to find your own way.
It could easily be used to describe BABYMETAL's own story - they could have followed the well trodden path of J-Pop and been very successful, but they chose to go with Metal ... but again they didn't just follow the same old format of every other metal band, they have done it their own way and it hasn't always been an easy route to follow.
Herman Li and Sam Totman from British Power/Speed metal band DragonForce did the guitar arrangements for this song (it is the only one they were involved in) and recorded the guitars for the album version. They have said they made this more technical and faster than most of their own songs thinking they would never have to play it live ... and that they had to practice hard when they did perform it with BABYMETAL at an awards show in London later in 2015.
This was the Kami Band playing live of course, each one of them is a world class musician. In this concert the Kami Band were Leda Cygnus and Takayoshi Ohmura on guitars (Takayoshi has the glitter pink guitar) with BOH on his 6 string bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums.
At the end of concerts BABYMETAL finish with their cry uniting them, the crowd, the band, the technicians and everybody else in "The ONE" or "Team BABYMETAL" with Su calling out "WE ARE..." and Yui, Moa and everybody in the crowd answering "BABYMETAL!"
Finally Su tells everybody to "Put up the Fox hands" (or kitsune), before the three girls call "See you" as they walk off stage.
Yes this is an anthem for BABYMETAL ... and they played it again at the end of their concert in London last night .... it was great! Kitsunes up!🤘🦊🤘

I'm a 58 year old, oldschool metalhead from Germany and I was bored of the metal genre from the late 90s to the early 2000s.
In 2014, my son came up to me and said, "Dad, look and listen to this." He showed me BABYMETAL with their songs: "Gimme Choclate, Headbanger and Death (live from their concert "Legend 1997")😀
What can I say, the rest is history and today I'm a huge fan of BM, as it goes? Only the FoxGod knows

2:43 _"Now Pizza time (Pizza time!)"_ 🦊🤘🍕
Welcome back to the Foxhole and BabyMetal's journey🦊🤘🔥
Nice you're back with this song to follow your BM journey, it's not just another song on BM setlist but also like here, it was the ender for the show in this World Tour 2023, currently in Europe and UK Tour, and everyone loved to have fun with this one.
"Road Of Resistance" is a power/speed metal song, it's one of their most epic anthem and the album version got the guitar arrangements made by Sam Totman and Herman Li from DragonForce. It's all about facing your own path without looking back.
This was part of the Trilogy Of 2015, live at New Year Fox Festival - Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, by this time their fame was already high due to viral success on YT of Gimme Chocolate! MV, people from all over the world attended this live concert in Japan, and 20K souls witnessed this epic moment.
With only 15 and 17 years old this moment will be forever remember when they're performing this song to reminds them all the support they got from their fans no matter where they go, either a small or big stages.
The Kami Band here are magnificent set of elite musicians whom were send to help with the metal sound, they rotate so probably you won't see some of them in all live concerts (especially the guitarists).
    They are:
    - Leda Cygnus, god of guitar, he's the only Kami Band member who's credited as a session musician when recording some albums.
    - Takayoshi Ohmura, god of guitar, he's Míkio' Fujioka's pupil (another beloved Kami Band guitarist who sadly past away) and a prodigy child, you'll see his recognizable pink guitar.
    - BOH, god of bass, he's the bald one and not only got amazing talent but his fun way to enjoy reminds me Flea from RHCP.
    - Hideki Aoyama, god of drums, he comes from a family of expert drummers, and his father is very famous in Japan music scene.
At the end of their shows they always said "We are BabyMetal!" with the crowd, to making them sure that they're part of this show and project too, is a line borrowed to X-Japan saying it at live concerts too.
    Next suggestion;
    - Headbanger!! live at Legend 1997, Gans Tomas got that clip safe to react under Head Bangya title, next month it'll be 10 years of that special song and event you already saw at Gimme Chocolate but this time you'll feel a totally different energy just like in this song.
    See you next time 🦊🤘🔥

    ⚡ 💀 💕 / 🏴 🏴 🏴
"Stand up and shout, Shout!, Justice Forever!" - (Road of Resistance) -
Pretty much a master class in audience control.
The lead singer Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) had just turned 17 a couple of weeks before this January 10th, 2015 concert.
Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) and Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) were 15.
BABYMETAL believe that if a song sounds too much like one genre, then it's not a BABYMETAL song.
You can definitely feel the speed metal component in this one though.
This performance was at Saitama Super Arena (SSA) with a sold out crowd of over 20,000.
Su first appeared at SSA in 2008 as the youngest member of the J-Pop trio Karen Girl's, when she was 10 years old.
She's been back many times since headlining with BABYMETAL.

I love your wonderful honest reaction. And "pausing to read lyrics" and then enjoying performance @ 100% is what I prefer vs "reading lyrics as you sort of watch"...
Yes, you are right... this is their anthem. They talk at interviews that this is representative of their path they have taken and will continue to take.
When they started in 2010, their "Cuteness or idol figure" was more prominent in gaining popularity, but the Japanese hard core metal community were not so receptive. in 2014, the metalheads in Britain acknowledged them with open arms, and this shot back to Japan, where opinions from abroad can have a profound influence (I know... I am Japanese) , their fame in the metal arena shot up dramatically. And this performance (Jan. 2015) was the first large arena performance. SO, Please listen again and near the end, the lead singer (Suzuka or Su-Metal) shouts,"Kakatte koi ya-!". In English this means,"Bring it on." So now you know the context. From the recordings I have, she shouted this two more times. One was @ Hiroshima concert, which was the first time they were missing a member (Yui-metal) although it was their first performance in Suzuka's home town and also to celebrate her 20th birthday.
The other time was after the pandemic when they could not perform before a moshing shouting crowd for couple of years and was able to make it back on stage.
You ask what they are shouting at the end of the song (or end of their live performance) is, they are asking'"We are?" and the audience shouts back, "BABYMETAL". Since the Japanese pronounce "metal" as "meta- ru" it sounds a little different from "metal". This chant is done on the two sides of the stage as well, but was edited out due to time. (I have seen this at live shows, and their asking 12 times does not bother me one bit... hoping they would stay on stage forever...)
Their choreography has meaning, even up to their fingertips. When they sing,"As long as you live, do not turn your backs.." the two on either side has their backs turned to you but immediately turns back to face forward.
And their last chant is,"Put your Kitunes up!" Kitsune is fox and is their mascot, which you can see by the shape of their finger gestures. So they are asking the crowd to put up their "fox finger gesture" in the air, which everyone in the crowd does. So maybe good song to listen to next might be "Megitsune", which means "female fox".
    Cheers. 🦊🦊🦊

ヨーロッパに行く前に武道館2DAYSをやってるのにbut the Japanese hard core metal community were not so receptiveってことはないと思うよ

Believe it or not this was the final encore of a 90+ minutes show, entirely performed with this level of energy. Which is crazy.
The real band, the Kami Band was introduced progressively since 2012 and eventually replaced the "babybones" (actors) for good since March 2014.
Su-metal told that she still remember that moment on the bridge as one of her favorite moments on stage and she also made this song her personal anthem. Because it's about forging your own destiny even there is no path to follow. Pretty much describing their own history.
    Until next time!

What inspired the song is their experience in the music industry. Three young ladies out of Japan enter the male dominated heavy metal music club and industry, and there was a lot of negativity and hate directed toward them. This is about overcoming the obstacles life throws at you as you follow "the pathless path" as they would say. "Follow your own path if you know it is true, even when there's no path at all." You did not seem to have a particularly good translation. The one section you read a couple of times is beater translated as "in the depths of our hearts the hot Metal spirit is burning, our resistance"

"-- this is something they frequently do at the end of a set. This performance gets better the more times I watch/listen, it's just so well done.
Hope you continue with them, they have so many outstanding individual performances and such unexpected range. You can find things like death metal, rap, scandanavian folk metal, egyptian metal core, pure prog, etc etc. The range is just beyond expectations for any band, and they are just phenomenal over and over.

When the red Lights came on and sirens were going off and she split the crowd, she created what is called a "Wall Of Death". Thanks from Japan 有難う💛。The crowd involvement (mosh pit, call & response, chant etc.) occurs wherever they go on this planet. This song is played in every show during their 2023 North American tour with DETHKLOK (29 gigs) and ongoing EU/UK tour (20 gigs) and the audience went and will go nuts. 😄
In your video, Su shouted some words at 14:18 meaning "Bring them on!". Fans analyzed that the provocative shout was thrown at people who had been ignoring, underrating, mocking, hating and even trying to discredit BABYMETAL. That shout may have been necessary in 2015 but not any longer. She shouted it rarely since then or when she does, it is with her mild voice and friendly smile that I love. The girls have grown up into beautiful ladies. The maturity has added more attractiveness to this band. Please react to videos including recent ones to explore BM more.

Nice reaction. Babymetal singing about their own struggles in the metal world and how they had to forge their own path through it. While that's the more direct meaning of the song. Babymetal tends to write their songs so they can apply to the listener as well. This song is an anthem to anyone who was told you can't do that. Only to do it and better than most ever thought possible. This is the fire that burns through Babymetal. As Su-metal has said "All things are Possible through Babymetal". Why would she believe anything else. Babymetal has achieved far beyond what even their producer thought they could and certainly what their entertainment label thought. Enjoy the rest of your journey through the foxhole and into the Babymetal galaxy of music.

  • @Ganimal83
    @Ganimal83 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Great reaction! You hit the nail on the head on a few points too!
Road of Resistance is definitely an anthem about unifying under one vision to move forward. It is also personal to Babymetal, as they received a lot of criticism from elitists for their music being “not metal”.
While Babymetal’s songs spans so many genres mixed with metal, their consistent theme is bringing positivity, energy, fun, and hope to ALL their songs and performances. Only Babymetal can do an ultra cute and playful “Gimme Chocolate”, singing about wanting chocolate but worried about gaining weight, then turn around and do an epic battle cry anthem.
The live band are top session musicians known as the Kami Band. They started doing partial performances for Babymetal in 2012, then beginning in 2014, they became their “full time” backing band for all live. Gimme Chocolate video was end of 2013 (Kami Band joined for the 5 song encore), the last major show where Babymetal used the fake band, as they couldn’t afford a live band previously.
Also, lead Su-metal’s vocals are always live. She will harmonize to herself on track at times, or use tracked vocals for small “intermission” parts of the song, or for minor effects. Backup vocals from Yui snd Moametal are mostly live, they will use track for extremely intense choreo at times, but they are always honest about this on stage when lip-syncing.
At the end, Babymetal was doing their signature show closing routine:
    “WE ARE?!”
    [Babymetal!!]
“Get your Kitsunes (fox signs) up!!!”
    “See you!!”
    [See you!!]
You should check out Rondo of Nightmare (Budokan 2014) for an epic band flex and a solo by lead Su-metal!

They shout "We are BabyMetal!" Several times, this means that the first means the "we" are the gals, the core of the doll, the second "we" now includes the band, the second doll layer. The third "we" now includes the audience, the fifth one includes the city, the next, the world, and the last now includes Kitsune, their Fox guiding spirit. The doll is now complete.

ive been to many different metal shows over the years...;amb of god, slipknot, coheed and cambria, trivium, white chapel, iwrestledabearobnce........none of them matched the insanity this band brought. the pits were so damn large and fast moving. it was like a spell was on the crowd. after seeing them back in 2014 i know ill never see that nutty intensity again lmao.

Just this year 2023, they release a 4th studio album, they are still on a complete world tour, with plenty of other bands, also Rock/Metal events. They were in Europe, Asia, and USA/Canada for about 30 shows this summer, also released Live albums for this year shows.
They are doing their SECOND Asian and European tour this year 2023. Yesterday, they were in the UK, tomorrow Germany, followed up with Netherland, Belgium, France, and so on.... again.

You commented on the notable differences between Gimme Chocolate!! and this song. BABYMETAL is very well known for their incredible diversity of musical sound - this is true not only from album to album, but from song to song on the individual tracks of their albums. They incorporate the styles of many different subgenres of metal, as well as musical genres in general in badass metal fusions that are catchy as hell. Their invented metal subgenre of "kawaii metal" literally means cute metal. One thing that is true of BABYMETAL as they have progressed over the years is that they are slowly moving away from the cute aspect of the song arrangements as they get older and their newer music is more in keeping with their ages at this point. They began when they were around 11 to 13 years, and now they are in their mid-20s (their youngest and newest official member is around 20), so it just makes sense for them to embrace a more adult-oriented focus as they progress and as they showcase that they are one of the best and most interesting things happening in metal today. Their newest album released only around 6 months ago (and which is completely killer by the way) in my opinion feels like the natural, more mature place for them to be at this stage in their lives as a band.
Anyway, to answer your question, Su-Metal shouts "put your kitsunes up" at the end of the song. In case no one has yet mentioned it, the kitsune is their special hand sign that is the sign of the Fox God - the metal deity that summoned them to spread metal across the universe according to their mythology (they have a VERY intricate and storied mythology about the creation of the band and the Fox God, and much lore and backstory - I'm sure you will be filled in by other fans as you do more BABYMETAL reactions.)
By the way, almost everyone will tell you to react to their live material. BABYMETAL is also very well known for being a band that must be seen live, and, speaking plainly, they are one of the top ten live performing bands in the world today and their arena shows are legendary. If you need recommendations just ask - although I'm sure other commenters will tell you without being prompted.
Anyway, nice reaction. Looking forward to the next one.

I believe there are times when the backup vocals for Moa and Momo are on backing tracks, the reason was during the course of a performance they get tired from the dancing. Su's vocals are pretty much always live.
The lyrics are what struck me when I first listened to them. Positive and happy, not dark and depressing.

I think they're a mix. There are vocals on the backing track but they are singing live too. If the live sound is louder it's really the best of both worlds.

I found Babymetal a few years ago,.. then I went backward in time to watch "sakura gakuin" when all three of them,( and other girls ) we're in a televised reality show at a school.
Some people call Babymetal a gimmick.. well there's a lot of baby metal fans that would argue that point.

Just to clarify, because it's confusing for a lot of people xD
Sakura Gakuin wasn't televised (I mean no more televised than other groups doing occasional talk shows or stuff like that) nor a reality show nor a school. It was an idol group, plain and simple, like AKB48 or Morning Musume or whatever else.

The "Baby Bones", when you see the band members dressed in skeleton outfits, those are actors. When you see them in the white robes or anything but the skeleton uniforms, they are real musicians, playing live. They only did that in he beginning because they couldn't afford real musicians. But that doesn't happen anymore

No zhe Actors were only a phenomenon of the begining. Kobametal wanted to prepare them and the audience forbMusicians that were planned, but he gad no budget for Babymetal. He was even forced to sendvhis girlsvtp work for him. They hadvto open Malls and Department stores. Amuse had no money for Kobametals Sideproject. He was only the Manager of Sakura Gakuin and hevadded the Heavy Music Club to their schedule. As Su later acknowledged they were scared of heavy metal. But he simply adopted the schedule slightly. He used them nit only as performers but as a test audience. You might say he forced thembto do metal, but he had no illusions if he would offer his time the girls would force themselves or die trying. He knew that they were mustreated but Sakura Gakuin was the best chance for the girls to get out of their bad situation and get either back on their feed and continue formal education or be better qualified as an idol. He knew his project needed a strong singer so he took Su under contract butveverything else was officially a small part of Sakura Gakuin. So if he went with them to a metal concert he paid out his own pocket. This was not quite the style of music they were interested in but he did his job and the girls were excited. Even today they always declare that they had a pretty bad pedigree but they work hard. 12 years after Sakura Gakuin. Su is the official stage director since 2018. Their default Band is now the original Kami Band West US Musicians that were originally hired to support them in the USA and Europe. They are the International most succesful japanese Band.

Excellent choice for your second go at BABYMETAL! I should mention that in the "Gimme Chocolate!!" video, those "musicians" were the "Babybones" - mimes who were performing with a backing track. In this video, you have the "Kami Band" - real session musicians who are tearing this song up! Anyway . . . .
Here's a list of more BABYMETAL songs (and best versions IMO) to help further your journey down the foxhole:
Doki Doki Morning (official music video)
    Iine! (official MV)
    Megitsune (official MV)
BABYMETAL Death (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
Onedari Daisakusen (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
Song 4 No Uta (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Uki Uki * Midnight (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Catch Me If You Can (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Live at Sonisphere 2014 version)
    Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
    Karate (official MV)
Meta Taro (Five Fox Festival version)
    GJ! (Fox Festival 2017 version)
Sis Anger (Fox Festival 2017 version)
    Shanti Shanti Shanti (official MV)
    Pa Pa Ya!! (official MV)
    BxMxC (official MV)
    Metalizm (official MV)
    Metali!! (official MV)
I would include the links but, for some reason, TH-cam sometimes thinks I'm posting spam and will delete my comment. For the links, see the TH-cam playlist “BABYMETAL Top Twenty”; it is a mix of MV’s and live performances, is more or less in historical sequence, and could be considered a road map down the BABYMETAL foxhole. If nothing else, it can be used as a reference to find high quality versions of BABYMETAL songs without mucking about - if they are on the list.
    We are . . . BABYMETAL!!!

That was a wonderful, informed yet emotional reaction. Yeah, it's kind of incredible but when BM started they didn't have the money for a band. So, always innovating they used the backing track and had the "Baby Bones Band" actors behind them. And then you end up with the original Kami Band and the combo is almost beyond sensational. It is so inspiring to me seeing these confident, talented teen age girls having a crowd of this size enthralled and in the palm of their hands. This performance always blows my mind.
