If you want to read an actually good/solid Millar book, I recommend either Huck or Starlight. They're wholesome to the point of being unrecognizable as Millar. Apparently Huck is a direct response to Man of Steel, since Superman is the only character Millar considers sacred, and seeing Supes portrayed that dour really rattled him.
The fight scene at the end of episode 1 reminded me of tropic thunder lol it looks like a fake superhero movie in a real movie about actors in Hollywood.
Welcome to the Burial of Mark Millar, courtesy of Ghost Hunter Dave. I really feel this being the summary of a better story by Millar is... far too apt. Like, you could reconfigure this story ever so slightly and you'd have an Image rival to Kingdom Come. Little tweak there, the heroes being actively part of world history diverting it towards a better alternate history. Little nudge there, great heroes, maybe some weren't as great parents and that leads to conflict, or maybe their villains' kids became heroes etc. etc. etc. But hey the art is great. I'm always happy when Quietly does a book. Torres also beautiful work in Circle.
Exactly the same for me. The flashbacks were the only thing that held my interest. And even though I ragged on it, as I edited the episode I found myself wanting to go back to it and at least finish it out of curiosity.
The book was fun. I see Millar as more of a Stan Lee than an Ellis or Moore. Not meaning that in a disparaging way, I mean Stan was pretty awesome. Huck and Superior are also looks at the Superman archetype and fun in my opinion. Most of the Millar World stuff is entertaining but deeper meaning is more than somewhat elusive. Popcorn fun, quick & disposable entertainment... much like his run on Authority the complimentary partnerships on art duties helps alot. A spoonful of sugar and whatnot...
I guess we should... I feel like we might've missed the window though. We covered the first 3 episodes pretty extensively, and I don't know if we would have a lot more insight to add. We loved it. It was consistently great.
I have this impression that Mark Millar makes comics to sell the ip to make movies and tv shows out of them. There's been a lot of Millar adaptions at least and they feel fit to be adapted.
I'd agree with that 100%. However, upon acknowledging that, for the most part, they aren't terrible. And even though they can feel a tad samey at times, I appreciate him creating all these new properties. Like his goal is to create his own comic book universe.
yeah, i watched the whole netflix show and yeah, the comic are much, much better! but i like the show too... and, i think 'Reborn' are one of the goods Millar's works!
I wrote a review of the show, and I said then, Legacy would work better as a trilogy of movies given the pace and structure of the story. Whereas Jupiter's Circle would work excellently as a TV show that could have been released in between the movies. I love Mark Millar's work and I really appreciate how succinct and powerful his stories are. Legacy and Circle are probably at the top of his creator-owned works. In terms of just a good read, Chrononauts and Huck are really good.
Completely agree with that proposal. The Legacy titles could be the big blockbuster films (or Netflix films) with the Circle title filling in the gaps via miniseries format. Perfect.
Young and the Super Restless I think this was an attempt at emphasizing the soap opera aspect of superheroes. Who shot JR/Dynasty as a super family. The fights looked 90s syndication which is crazy cause those 90s shows look better of the two.
@@ImperiusRex disagreeing with facts is pretty silly. It was objectively the most watched show when it came out. That is fact. Disagreeing with it means you are objectively wrong. You can not like it. You can claim it will be forgotten. You can claim it wasn't very good. You can claim it didn't have any social relevance but you absolutely can't claim it wasn't the most watched show on streaming when it came out because this last one is fact.
Wait a minute! I'm only 45 seconds into the video and The Goon Omnibus collection is no longer over Dave's shoulder. What gives? Spring cleaning? Upcoming episode discussion...... or a simple rearranging of the shelves? I'm onto you, Dave. Edit: I see them hiding behind Troy.
I liked the show but I think just for two reasons. I thought it was neat to have a “Superman” in the real world trying to hold to comic book ideals that really don’t work out in a reality that has beings of such overwhelming power. Second I loved the idea of them getting their powers from a Cthulhu type entity, made for a serious anticipation of some dark shit under the surface. Bummer it didn’t turn out that way.
I haven't read any Millar stuff, but that's mostly because of the adaptations and my lack of enjoyment. Weirdly what Dave was saying about the "surface level" is pretty similar to my opinion, just add in that it's full of bravado that screams falsely. As such I have had no interest in his comics, this episode just enables that.
Millar is a great entry-level comic for teens wanting to get into the medium I feel like. That's where I gravitated to him most. If you didn't jump on board during those formative years, the window may have been missed?
They could have easily copied the comic's beats and come away with something decent. There was so much build up of the character in the 1960s and how it shapes them in the modern day and they threw that to all to the wind for this rubbish. The coolest thing the show did was show a dude flip a table.
I watched the show I like it but the past was really slow I feel they could have rapped it up two episodes earlier with the same point we don’t even really get an explanation I assume it’s gods that give them powers. I am bugged they didn’t explain everybody else’s powers that weren’t form the union. It puts a damper on them getting superpowers because their is just huge holes in stories. I didn’t like any of the charachters too much I was starting to like Walter as he tried to be a strong older brother and was complex but could handle being the bigger person in the future but we see he’s crazy and wants to kill people. I was waiting for sky fox to make a real good appearance I knew I’d love him because he is a freedom fighter that differed in opinion and is a cool Batman with powers. But nothing I was really disappointed with that. I liked the delving into the ideology of the new times and old colliding. But I really loved the shot of skyfox smoking a cigar. I just want to see the scenes of him defecting and beating the shit out of the union or vice versa.
I read your comment quickly and thought the last sentence said "I just want to see the scenes of him DEFECATING and beating the shit out of the union..." and I thought I really missed something! :)

'Man of Steel' the Snyder's movie you say?
The best millar book would also be Wanted
You guys already started the vid laughing your asses out, one of the reasons I watch you guys 😂😂😂 Long live Imperius Rex!

It absolutely did.
Chrononauts is out I thought - it’s one of my favorites of his book because of Sean Gordan Murphy
For a brief moment I read Jupiter Ascending lol
God help us...
I secretly love that movie though I mock
It constantly while watching it #valerianwasbetter #nocaresistilldecretlyloveit

i enjoyed the tv show in kinda the similar way i did the godfather 2. i was more interested in the flashback/origin story aspect of it all.

For sure. Completely agree with that. Millar is having fun and living his best life. I guess we can't fault him for that.
I kinda wish milliar had done a wanted vs jupitors legacy comic.
That would be kind of great actually.
You are a visionary
Are you guys going to discuss Invincible season 1 after the finale?

you guys should do an episode on brat pack
His Judge Dredd stuff is pretty bonkers! 'Inferno' is a particular favourite of mine! Full on crazed bloodbath of a story 😊😉🔥🔥🔥
Not having read the book, what is the deal with the ship's captain? Does he even appear in the book at all?
I don’t believe so- missed opportunity
Superior is basically a more interesting take on Shazam and Nemesis is the OG Batman Who Laughs.
I would love if you reviewed covered Joe The Barbarian on here - finding quality reviews of this modern classic on TH-cam is actually impossible.
I feel like this is a request we've gotten a few times. I dug it quite a bit when I read it years back.
@@ImperiusRex please do as it’s one of my all time favorites - and it’s my birthday today and that would be a sweet present! :)
“Teen Team” ✅
“Viltrumite ‘stache” ✅
2/3s in and already 2 Invincible refs! Subscribed!
More where that came from. Welcome aboard!
Supercrooks needs to be made into live action, suicide squad meets oceans 11 with the gore and humor of the boys, would be an instant classic.
I thought I heard it was going to be animated AND live action... which doesn't make any sense to me...
Personally, I would like for you to talk about Nemesis and Superior. Yes, they are movie pitches as usual, but really interesting ones
yeah, i watched the whole netflix show and yeah, the comic are much, much better! but i like the show too...

Troy my man, I'm digging that shirt.
Troys shirt game is strong in this episode. I want one to go with my Golden Girls sleep pants
Thanks everyone. I did it for you.

All they had to do was follow the comic. they went and spent a whole season on the first issue.
It was the most watched show at the time so it was bigger than you seem to think.
Gonna have to disagree with ya

I really did like it being linked with American history as I did a research paper of Rockefeller and of the 30’s Great Depression stuff like that
Never read the comic

Yep. Might be one of the shortest turnarounds for a streaming service to date.
