That incident didn't end her career. Damita Jo still debuted at #2 and sold well. Radio stations did stop playing her music and still don't really play her music.

Damita Jo initially started out well selling around 380K the first week, but momentum died quickly without radio and mtv support. The album didn't officially pass the million mark until almost 2 years after it's release. Much slower than the previous albums. That album should have easily done between 2-3 million copies in the US and 4-6 million internationally based off the sales of the previous 2 albums. This was also her first album since 1984 where none of the singles were top 10 hits, let alone a top 20.

She's been in the industry for two decades at that point. Her family is one the most famous music families in the history of music. Now, could Justin have said no? Sure.
