    It was HIS SONG "Rock Your Body". It was HIS LYRICS "...gonna hve you naked by the end of this song.." It was HIS HAND that ripped her costume away, it was HIS copying of her brother Michael that helped propel his solo career. But it was all Janet's fault? That witch hunt was nothing but straight up racism coupled with the medias insatiable lust for a Jackson vendetta in whichever form they could get it, and I couldn't give 2 fucks what anyone has to say about it.

      HYPROINC Then...to throw salt on the wound...he makes a song with Michael Jackson, the woman's brother who he publicly sexually assaulted, AND MAKES MUSIC AFTER HE'S DEAD! 😤😤😤 Chile...I can not with white people in the industry man.

    This video is so amazing and true!!! PREACH!!!! I hate that hypocritical JT. Poor Janet still hasn't recovered and people still bring up this performance whenever you mention her name. It's a shame too because you know all the people that scorned her since '04 will becoming back and being fake and acting like they loved her when she's gone. #TeamJanet

    Such a shame. Mind you, had that Superbowl incident never happened, Janet definitely had more potential top 10 singles to get. The "Damita Jo" album was criminally underpromoted & str8 up ignored.

    That incident didn't end her career. Damita Jo still debuted at #2 and sold well. Radio stations did stop playing her music and still don't really play her music.

    • @CalvinMichaels
      @CalvinMichaels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It more so marked the decline of her career as far as earning big hits and album sales. Damita Jo initially started out well selling around 380K the first week, but momentum died quickly without radio and mtv support. The album didn't officially pass the million mark until almost 2 years after it's release. Much slower than the previous albums. That album should have easily done between 2-3 million copies in the US and 4-6 million internationally based off the sales of the previous 2 albums. This was also her first album since 1984 where none of the singles were top 10 hits, let alone a top 20.

    • @jeffcaldwell30
      @jeffcaldwell30 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you, and I like your take on Timberlake and how he quickly transitioned back to white boy from the Superbowl fiasco when he realized how bad things are on this side of the fence. I lost all respect for him after that and said the same things you said. I still like his music, but not him.

    I think another thing that softened the blow for Justin is that there was no social media back then. Had there been, black twitter would have ripped him. But unfortunately, it would not have made a difference. He still would've gotten over.

    I can care lest about Justin performing at the NFL plantation. They are just showing their true colors. Justin has done what a lot of white artist done throughout music history. Make their money by imitating black artist. Once they get popular shunning them.

    I didn't know that "charts" line was for Janet I thought the whole thing was about Prince & I was pressed enough about that for a long time, I guess not too pressed, I bought the album & still listen to it so...

    • @CalvinMichaels
      @CalvinMichaels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Here's the lyrics:
      Could you speak up and stop mu-mumbling
      I don't think you came in clear
      When you're sittin' on the top
      It's hard to hear you from way up here
      Now I saw you tryin' to act cute on TV
      "Just let me clear the air..."
      We missed you on the charts last week
      Damn, that's right you wasn't there
      The mumbling line is in reference to Janet always being soft spoken, the trying to act cute line is in reference to her Oprah interview, and the charting line is about the lackluster sales of her 20 YO that had come out around that time.

    I don't think there's ever been an artist in the history of modern music with who I love their music deeply but hate to confess it because of the bullshit surrounding their imaging/media scandals as much as Justin Timberlake. My dude been killin the game since the 90's but there is NO EXCUSE for the destruction of Janet Jackson's career on the back of his white male ego and privilege. I can only imagine how epic his solo SuperBowl show would be, especially at this point in his career, but I CANNOT imagine myself even turning on the TV for a sec for his halftime show after what happened in '04 lol!!! Salute to the QUEEN/GODDESS/LEGEND that is Ms. Janet Jackson. Fingers crossed for new music coming soon.....

  • @brigmyers
    @brigmyers 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oh and then my last question is "was the black community buying Janet Jackson's music after the Superbowl? Or, heck! were they buying it right before the Superbowl? Because as you point out, her records sales were on decline because fans her age had moved beyond her music. She will always be legend and iconic and she is STILL selling out her tours for those who love her...SUPERBOWL or NOT!

  • @y1e2t34i
    @y1e2t34i 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You had an interesting take here and I now have to do what I didn't think I'd ever have to do: defend Justin Timberlake.
    You mentioned the ages of Justin and Janet. You mention that ageism exists (which I agree with) but you don't take the extra step and look at who has the power in the situation. Justin's 23 years old. You mentioned Janet was like 36 or 37. She's been in the industry for two decades at that point. Her family is one the most famous music families in the history of music.
    Now, could Justin have said no? Sure. If a CEO of a company tells a VP to do something, there's still pressure on the VP to do it. From everything I've read, it was her idea. She asked him to do it. Mind you, JJ knew where the lines were when it came to nudity. She had a really famous Rolling Stone cover that had a ton of controversy back in the mid-90s that she caught flack for back then. Granted, if she says that America is super puritinical when it comes to nudity, she's right but she should have known better.
    Ultimately, JT should really shut the f up and enjoy his success because I don't think the dude's music is very good but that's obviously just my opinion but the whole apology thing needs to be put to rest. According to him he's apologized to her. He apologized at the Grammys. He semi-apologized at the MTV news junket. I personally don't think he needs to apologize at all if he was just doing what she asked him to do in the first place but again, that's my .02.

    • @tamarajay7676
      @tamarajay7676 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see where your coming from but most ppl aren't asking for JT to apologize for pulling of the wardrobe. I think its more about his comments and behaviour afterwards bcuz of backlash for something they both obviously agreed to do. N the Jackson family is something media started destroying since 1993. Her family really didn't have much power since then. Janet on her own was considered a go to artist and legacy good until superbowl. It seems she's making a come back since 2018 though.

  • @audiolove1976
    @audiolove1976 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I agree with your assessment, but disagree that Janet's a nostalgic act. She's reached a status that's beyond being nostalgia. She, along with the other people you mentioned, are icons, which puts them in an entire different category. The SOTW tour has proven that not only does she still have a rabid fan base, but that she can still draw a large, varied audience..... with little promotion/ fanfare. I can think of plenty of acts from the 80s who qualify, but Janet's not one of them. I'm good with whatever she decides to do, but wouldn't blame her if she decides to pay Justin Timberlake and the Superbowl dust. ✌🏽

    I completely agree. I use to listen to Justin's music because like you said it sound good but when that happened and only Janet was penalized. I was like what the fuck and to add insult to injury I think he went to the NAACP awards that same year or a year later. I was like no Janet they should be a shame of them selves. That's why when I lived in NYC I didn't go to his restaraut and I just try to stop paying him any mind. I though at the least he should have been man and stood up for a woman.

    Justin Timberlake really doesn't have a great catalogue of music. He will be remembered mostly for nostalgia's sake. FutureSexLoveSounds is not a classically good album. It was great for the time it was released but it's not Confessions. Until The End of Time; even with the nasally MJ impersonation he had been doing at the time.
