Thanks for the footage. Betio is where my Great Uncle died on the first day of Battle. His remains were unaccounted for until this past month thanks to DNA. He had been MIA for 74 years.

My grandpa was at Betio for each day of the battle. He landed in the 3rd wave on Red Beach 2. My dad and I went back with him to the island in the 90s ... We found bullets, bones, a mortar round and remnants of the war. Unbelievable tragedy they went thru. This video took me back to that special memory I got to share with him while he was still alive. Thanks for posting it. Cheers.

A wonderful historic video of the relics lying in Betio Atoll. My father is from Kiribati who married my Australian mother. I have seen these war relics myself twice when visiting family in Kiribati, and my uncle in law who is a policeman told me at the Betio police station they actually have WW2 guns that still work. If you ever go back and find the police station ask for Peter (Salifas husband) and he will show you. I agree there should be maybe a museum set up, even in Tarawa to house the relics they can. Many of the dug outs need a good clean out too from pollution!

In 1992 I had the honor of attending the annual reunion of the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and was able to meet several veterans of this battle. My host, also a 2nd MarDiv vet (but he was not at Tarawa) told me the veterans of Tarawa held a special place of honor and were looked upon with awe and respect by other Marines.

I agree. 4 double row radial engines, long strut landing gear because of the high wing. Gear deploys laterally not linearly (as in a B-17) Very long wing with narrow chord, this was the high lift wing of a B 24.

I disagree with you saying that stuff belongs in a museum, I feel as an American combat veteran I feel that this equipment is best left where it died, this stuff was with those men who died fighting there. It is the head stones of their sacrifice. It has far more meaning where it is than taken away from there

    • @VicStefanu

These things belong in a museum not only in order to remind the new generations of the sacrifices of their ancestors but (equally important) everything is rusting away and soon there will be nothing but lumps of brown shapeless rust..

The Marine commander on the ground on Betio stated "Situation in doubt." The Japanese commander had bragged: "It will take 10,000 men a 1,000 years to take this island." I guess the Marines didn't read that statement. Still, it was a horrific battle for all. Thanks also for mentioning the poor Korean laborers, really slaves caught in the middle of the battle. The tank is an American Sherman M4, the front of it is pointed toward the ocean and the open hatch was the drivers. The 37mm main gun is almost in a 180 degree position toward where the defending Japanese were. The worst position this tank could be is the one it's in because the rear had the thinnest armor and a tank commander would not have intentionally exposed his tank in that position, the most vulnerable/weakest, especially that it was coming ashore as an invasion force. It most probably had a tread blown off and was rotating in place before the driver realized there was no hope of forward motion anymore and his attempt to swing it around with the only track left operating probably burrowed itself deeper in the sand and abandoned it after firing a round or more at the enemy.
But for the direction of the gun, It could be possible that the shifting sand and tides over 70 years has played a part in it's current position but I'd stick with my first description as being the most likely scenario.

Besides my passion I've mentioned, I've Always been involved in art, film, photography, model making and Music and make my living building and renovating homes as my creative outlet that actually puts money in my pocket ♥
But You and I would make a Great team for pursuing and identifying locations of interest and documenting them. I am particularly interested in diving into the waters of Bataan to see all the wrecks down there. I could go On forever about such mutual interests we share and am even envious of your being able to afford pursuing your interests as you do, but at least I can see the result of your pursuits/ interest's and I Thank You for that.
Keep it up and be safe my New Friend.

    Hi Vic
, some background info taken from pacificwrecks.com if anyone is interested.
    02:37 - B-24J-1-CO "Miss Bee Haven" Serial Number 42-72982
    Mission History
    :
On January 21, 1944 took off from Tarawa Airfield (Hawkins Field) on Tarawa (Betio) at 12:21am piloted by 1st Lt Morris A. Skaalen on a bombing mission against Roi Island at Kwajalein Atoll. Aboard as an observer was Captain George Van Vleet, Jr. from intelligence S-2. This bomber took off on a west to east direction but was unable to attain an altitude of 100'. Both pilots lowered the nose slightly in an attempt to gain speed, then pulled up sharply before impacting Tarawa Lagoon tail first. This bomber exploded on impact roughly 150 yards off the southern shore of Tarawa (Betio) roughly two-thirds of a mile east of the runway. Seventeen minutes later, B-24J 42-72999 also crashed into the sea further to the east.
    Fates of the Crew
Three survived the crash and seven were killed on impact. The three survivors were able to escape from a hole torn to the rear of the co-pilot's position allowing them to escape. Observing the crash from Tarawa (Betio), Dr. Feves waded out to the crash site and assisted the three survivors into a life raft.
    Wreckage
The wreckage of this bomber settled at a depth of 18" or partially exposed during low tide. During the crash, the tail section broke off rear of the bomb bay scattering bombs and the tail section landed upside down. The front half of the bomber impacted nose first then spun to the right. The bottom of the nose section was badly damaged and torn. Rear of the co-pilot's position was torn, allowing the three survivors to escape.

Really appreciate your efforts and great videos of places we will never get to see, but are tied to through family members who fought in WWII. I especially enjoyed your Guam coverage as that is where my father served in the Navy, 1944-45. I feel your work is priceless, as you stated in the video, "these things belong in a museum.". And, sadly, this era of our history is NOT being taught in many schools across our once great nation. God bless you for your work. That is why you feel so emotional at these places, the dead are crying out to be remembered.

The aircraft is a Consolidated B-24 bomber. The Davis wing shape and certainly the landing gear leg are dead givaways as to the ident. The tank is a Sherman no question. There are photos of Red Beach after the battle with this tank in the same position. This battle was appalling!

Interesting tidbit about the battle: The Higgins boats couldn't get over the coral, and dropped the Marines off way out from the landing beach. Only the Alligators could get inland, but the first wave suffered such high casualties that the Navy drivers wouldn't go back in. The Coast Guard guys, having lifesaving as one of their core values, went back in to get the Marines out of the water and onto the beach. They suffered very high casualties, but kept running in as long as they had working equipment to do so, and the Marines there were very grateful to the Coast Guard.
That's not a slight against the Navy. They had other battle where they shined, but this one was where the Coast Guard really stepped up.

Vic, You have put together a series of interesting and informative videos! My congratulations, and gratitude. As I served in the Marine Corps many years ago, I came to know quite a few of the men who had served with the Second Marine Division and fought here. Along with the Marines, the Navy took a beating here as well. The Light Carrier USS Liscome Bay was sunk by a Japanese Submarine on the 24th with a large loss of life. With a crew of approximately 900, nearly 700 went down with her. Thank you for remembering them!

Had a cousin killed on first day of Tarawa. Like a lot of other Marines hastily buried on Tarawa, his grave could not be located after the war for re-burial in a permanent cemetery. Because of that, all these guys are listed as missing and still have open MIA cases at the DOD. The appalling MIA numbers for Tarawa are skewed by this --- Marines confirmed KIA but carried MIA because the location of their remains is unknown.

    • @VicStefanu
      @VicStefanu  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The Shermans at Betio where C Company, 1st Corps Tank Battalion (medium).C Company was attached to the 2nd Marine Division's 2nd Light Tank Battalion for the Tarawa invasion.

      Cuddles
      Unknown
      3rd Platoon
      Cannonball
      Colorado
      Charlie
      Condor
The tank pictured may be Chicago which stalled in a shellhole before landing on Red Beach One.
Fourteen Shermans from C Company started out from the line of departure. Eight tanks were to land on Red Beach 3 under command of 1st Lt. Lou Largey. The other six were to proceed to Red Beach 1 with 1st Lt. Ed Bale in the lead. While heading for the reef, two LCMs were sunk along with their Sherman tank cargo. The 12 remaining tanks made it onto the reef and began rolling toward the beach. Two of these Shermans never made it to the beach because they sank in deep shell holes. According to Alexander most of the crew from one tank drowned riding low in tight quarters. C Co. and in fact all Marine Shermans at this time had no water fording kits available. This meant these Shermans were unable to operate in depths greater than three feet. Field expedient sheet metal stack extentions were fabricated but were of no use in a deep shell crater which were many on the reef ringing Betio. In any case ten Sherman tanks touched down on Betio's beach.3
On Red 3, the four tanks of 3rd Platoon Cannonball, Colorado, Charlie, and Condor , had made it to the beach. This unit landed on Red Beach 3 intact, except for Colorado which had taken a sharp hit on the front hull from a medium caliber Japanese gun. Their orders were to advance and blast any bunkers encountered. In a very short time three of the Shermans were put out of action. The exception was Colorado. After being hit a second time by another Japanese gun and bursting into flames the tank was driven straight back to the water on Red Beach 3. Dented and charred, Colorado was saved. It was the only Sherman to survive the first day on Red Beach 3.
The three other tanks of C Company had all been put of action very quickly including Largey's own mount, Cannonball. The four tanks had proceeded through a hole blasted in the Red 3 seawall and proceded inland in an attempt to gain the southern shore of Betio. Cannonball and Charlie had crossed the taxiway and were headed through the triangle area in the central portion of the island. Largey in Cannonball had become mired in a burning fuel dump while Charlie had been hit by a 47mm Japanese gun and set on fire.
The 2nd platoon rolled onto Red Beach 3 and quickly reformed there before a short drive over to Red 2.
The tanks of the 1st Platoon and Company HQ, led by First Lt. Ed Bale, had orders to land on Red Beach 1. After the LCM's dropped their ramps on the edge of the reef the tanks began lumbering forward toward the western most landing beach. Only four Shermans, China Gal, Chicago, Cobra, and Cecilia made it onto the island from this group. Chicago reportedly stalled out in a deep shell hole while manuvering near the island. (note - no confirmation of this)
All but one Sherman was recovered after the fighting. They were sent back to Hawaii for refitting and later reissued to another unit that used them in the Marshall Islands campaign in early 1944.

    • @jeffburnham6611
      @jeffburnham6611 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@John Brock, you are correct. The reason they had to wade so far to the beach was due to only a limited number of LVT Alligators available during the landing. The Higgins boats couldn't cross the reef, so the Marines were forced to wade ashore. The LVT's however were able to crawl right up onto the reef and proceed to the beaches. Consequently, the Higgins boats were kept at the reef after they unloaded, and then shuttled the injured back to the ships and brought in supplies.

Vic Stefanu , watching your vid now and looking forward to the others , Im far from an expert I just love history but my guess ID on the wing would be that of a Consolidated B-24, the wheel bay location under the wing was my tip off .

Those two tracked vehicles - I believe - are Studebaker Weasels. They used the Champion flathead 6 engine and had clutches that drove the tracks in unison or individually for the purpose of turning.

Vic, the seawall built at water's edge and the outer reef are of much more historic interest in telling the battle story than rusted junk.

    Hi Vic:
Thanks for posting this, incredible history.
The vehicle you found at 9:28 is a Japanese type 95 Ha Go tank. The Japanese had 7 on Tarawa at the time of the battle, part of the 7th Sasebo Special Naval Landing Force.
Most were used as static pillboxes, but a few roamed the beaches according to reports.

One more thing. As my memory serves me, that large grounded boat near the sea wall looks like one that I believe was there the day of the landing and contained Japanese snipers.

Peleliu takes the worst battle of the Pacific designation at 40 percent landing casualties, crap pre-invasion reconnaissance mapping, and lack of basic supplies like clean water throughout the battle. The Japanese learned much by radio and used the tactics to wage "endurance defense" for the remainder of the war.
