I am 83 years old and I have been cleaning cat fish my entire life and I learned something today! I guess i'll have to go fishing and catch me some cat fish and try out what I learned today. I really liked the spool deer blind video. I just subscribed.
Glad ya found the channel!! That Blind hunts great with two people. We got a ton of hogs in that location, but sure we will shoot a hunting video from it eventually. Been some nice bucks in there at times
You caught 'em son. Clean 'em however you like! And i fo sho like what you just done!!!!!
I do believe that might be the Best comment ever!!! If every fisherman thought that way, I'd have to say we'd all just be alright, lol
Well as you said, there’s a lot of us that can skin a catfish but however if a person isn’t to proud or stubborn to listen and watch other techniques you may just learn something. I could skin a catfish really before I could do much of anything but I’ve never watched someone clean one without a knife. Bad as I’ve got about losing or forgetting my pocket knife. If I got skinners no problem ! Also I use to be one of those people about wasting meat by filleting. There’s a simple remedy to that. If the people worried about leaving to much meat on the bone, well throw that back bone in the grease as well. Even though it’s not a lot of meat on there I like them back bones. Maybe I’m just weird. I sure wouldn’t throw a backbone away if my granny was anywhere on the premises ! lol. As always. Great video
Thanks!! Honestly the backbone is my favorite part, yet I don't keep many because of packaging in the freezer. Just not worth it, but I do eat a fresh one from time to time!!
I cleaned some channel cats yesterday the same way. I'm going to fry me some up with a few bream for supper tonight, lol👍🏽👍🏽
I'd take Channel cats over Blues and Opps😳
@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 I like to steak out my flathead and dip it in cajan batter and fry it up.
@Sabe53 I bet it's good for sure!! I do steak small ones ever once in a while
This was a great video. I've always fella my catfish, but now I'm going to cut them up into steaks, that looks good! Thank you for sharing!
You'll think your eating a new species!!!
I do mine like that every time. Always have. Good to see ya stick with it. Don't get no better. Chuck from Arkansas.
Thanks Chuck, Choke some that water back a bit up there. Need this stuff to drop a little🤣🤣
Great teaching video! Thanks!
Thanks, and thanks for watching
I like to drop one of these straight up how to videos ever once in a while because a lot of people use TH-cam for how to. A lot of people won't watch our full videos. As much work as we put into this, we still only get 30-45% view time on average. That's understanding some right out the gate just realized they clicked on the wrong video or simply don't have time to watch.
Howdy, Brother! The homemade fish skin'n hook is gold! Much appreciated and Drive-On, Cowboy!! 🤠
If you ain't got one, better make one. That thing is awesome
Great job as always! The only thing we do different is tail bleed the bigger ones! ATB
I do the same on bleeding bigger ones. Usually over 25 lbs or so
Tysm for the edumacation, very inspiring to get out there and drop a line in!
Get r done!!!
New sub here; this is the 2nd vid I've seen on your channel (the pole-fishing was the first),
and you sure made me hungry... I can almost smell those fish a-frying...!
God bless ALL of us!
WWG1WGA
Glad you could join us for the ride!! Enjoy catching up!!
I have dressed a few more than a few before i learned to fillet, but i never heard of or saw anyone breaking that bone on either side to have a place to start, we always had to make a cut and fight to get a little in the skinners to get the ball rolling, sometimes the easy way is staring us in the face and we dont have a clue
2nd comment along those lines. I honestly just did it like I was taught. Glad I could share that. I do score at times on really big fish, but most smalls get the pliers on that bone. You'll like it cause it's faster!! I learn new stuff everyday, but God blessed me with a few guys that evidently taught me a few things. Thanks for watching!!
That’s how we grew up eating them. Now days everything is super trimmed because a lot of folks don’t like the lateral line or fish fat. So to eliminate any possibility of “fishy” taste everything is trimmed way down and rinsed.
Pretty much in a nut shell. I like em both ways at times
My family here in North West Alabama, were fishers , deer hunters, squirrel, rabbit and turkey hunts. I grew up cleaning first and wild hunt food 😊
My Mom's folks from Mobile, Roll Tide!!
A quality video. Very informative. tks
Glad you enjoyed it!!
New subscriber!! Great channel , love your content!!
Thanks, Glad to have you!!
I don't have an electric knife but to filet is so much easier, and then you can do a crown cut right behind the last gill, and you still get a lot of meat. How ever too each his own.
Agreed. Everyone has different ways. I still pick up tips from others that sometimes is better. It's kinda whatever works
You got an American right to keep what you want and don't on them fish !! There is aways going to be a stick n the mud on them comments. I'm a new subscriber and love this content !! God Bless looking forward to the next video !!
Thanks, you get a lot of videos to catch up on, so enjoy the video list. We drop new ones regularly 🤣🤣
Like when you show how you clean fish that’s like all the videos to.
Thanks Taylor, I'ma keep em coming!!
Yes sir when i was coming up we ran trot lines every year and we would do it bout the same way but them kids like them fillets
Spoiled kids🤣🤣🤣
Man that’s good
Thanks!!
@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 you make the best videos that I watch. Hang in there man
@Shaw.77 Thanks, y'all's feedback makes it worth doing!!
Thing that are important to know - this video 🙌
100%
Awesome man just like I do it
Definitely nothing wrong with it. Worked for decades!!
My dad always called that little bone on the side of his head, his "ear". He taught me to skin exactly like you are doing it.
Yes sir!!! Thank God for those Dads!!
My great grandfathers use to make catfish head soup 👊😎
Had several comments on this. Never made it or tried it. Won't knock it till I do!!
@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 I can't recall eating it I could've I don't remember lol but I definitely remember them putting a big blue cat head in the pot lol so that's something I might have to try or retry lol I just don't care for a head in the pot but they loved it😂. Keep Rockin thanks for the reply 👊😎
@israelsapp7863 thank you for watching!!
@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 most definitely 👊😎
Hello, new to this channel! From good ol southern cali
I didn’t find your video on how to cook them
There are a lot of videos on cooking them. Some of those are combination videos. Also you can go to our other channel, Bayou Belle Outdoors, and there is a fish cooking video on there!! Thanks for watching and for subscribing!!
I love the 45 degree cut. You forgot the cheek meat on that flathead! Otherwise, well done!
Got me on the check meat again🤣🤣🤣
Also, you ever get complaints about throwing out that red meat ? Lol
Not at the table!!
Lmao. If they are truly hungry, the complaints get fewer and fewer is what I’ve learned.
@kennethvaughan8195 True that!!
i generally tell people that complain about trimming fish that they can have all of that trim. Ill even cook it for you.
That's pretty good right there. Bet they don't clean their plate either🤣🤣
I have skin meny a catfish but your way was very interesting. I am gona see if I can import some of your ways into mine.
Question. I have never had seen or heard of catfish stakes. How do you cook them?
I believe it's in the video before this one in our video list that we fry up steaks in. Fry them just like you'd regularly fry fish. Just pick the meat off each side of the bone and you'll think your in Heaven. Totally different taste!!
Looks like you’ve done that a time or two, God bless!
3 or 4 times🤣🤣. Thank you!!
Impressive
Thanks!!
Greatest vibes ever ❤ it truly respect from 205 pisces black alpha male Birmingham Alabama home of the Civil rights moment
Glad you Enjoyed!!
Good looking cats! I admit I have never tried catfish steaks. I have always used a hook I made and skinning pliers. You taught this old man something though. I always used a knife and cut behind that head bone….going to try using the pliers and grab the bone and skin next time I catch some catfish. I catch mostly channel catfish here in Florida but have caught blue cats and yellow cats as well. Enjoyed the video ole boy. Have a great week. 👍🇺🇸🙏
I'm over here like President done jumped on my page🤣🤣🤣. Them channel cats easiest to dress by snapping that bone. Hope it saves you some time!! God Bless
Man I want to try them steaks!
Whattttt? You ain't ever!!! You gonna be like, where you been all my life🤣🤣🤣. Y'all keep Rollin. You got some awesome Content
Everyone has a different way of doing it and it doesn't hurt to learn and try it different ways to see what you like the best for your taste and how you enjoy it. God bless and happy fishing 🎣
That's right. We got a good many ways we actually use depending on time we have to clean em and taste we looking for. I fillet a lot, but like me some bone in ever once in a while. God bless
Man love it that’s how I clean mine
Thanks!!
Bradley: that's Exactly the way I've been cleaning catfish all my life and that's a long long time. They cook better and taste a lot better to me than filets - but, everybody has an opinion. To me, anything cooked on the bone has a lot better flavor. Great video! Cheers - Roy
I think you nailed it Roy, life just deals us a hurry these days, thus the fillets🤣🤣
How did we get whole trout, gutted, boneless? Head, skin, tail , all still there? Back bone and ribs were gone.
I'm not much of a trout guy, lol
How did the old timers skin the head to make gravy or court bullion
You got me on that one. I've skinned heads and cut out the nuggets, but ain't ever made fish head soup. Now I have made Court Bullion. I'll have to add that in one of our catfish cook sessions
Dude , trying bleeding out the fish after you catch it , makes a difference. Gonna try this skinning method next time and that hook set up
We do bleed them if they over 12 lbs most of the time. Unfortunately I have to be careful how much of that sort of thing we put on TH-cam
What about the red meat under the skin?
I just started catfishing.
Should you trim it off?
Personal preference really. Imo if they under 10 lb flatheads they not too bad. Anything over I cut the lateral line out. Blues and channels over 5 lbs get trimmed. You'll see a lot of the way it's done in some of our other videos!!
Do skinners ever need replaced or fail to use?
If you buy a cheap pair, then possibly, but the will work to an extent. I've probably had my same ones for 30+ years. If you buy a good set from a sporting goods store or one of the net companies, they will last a lifetime
I noticed that on the OP you didn’t cut the red part of the meat off the steaks. You don’t find that it has a strong taste?
About that size and down I don't worry bout it. If they over 10+ lbs they normally get trimmed out for me
Looks like some nice meat their, when cutting the steaks why cut the 45’s instead of straight cuts?
45 just makes longer steaks
That’s a lot of work. Now, it’s worth it for steaks occasionally. But I prefer your electric knife method.
Lol, Joe you new school, I'm caught somewhere in between 🤣🤣🤣
@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 I actually growed up skinnin em like that. I’m just lazy now 😂
@joebowman8204 me too some times, lol
I bet you got those in Big Creek Lake, huh❓
I didn't know Big Creek Lake had fish🤣🤣
thank you. prayers and blessings to all from nashville tennessee 07 may 2024..
Thanks, blessings back to Nashville!!
That’s a pile of good eats
Yes sir!!
our way was on the ground and pull the skin off with a old pare of pliers
I been there done that. Makes you appreciate a good pair of skinners 🤣
Get You a Rotary Compost been, and You could have Rich Compost for Your garden, and No was at all.
True, very true. Thought for future
But now one thing in my 69 years I have never caught a flat head or ate one. But I told my grandson, that I call sunshine, I wanted to target flathead this year 😂
We have one Limb line video from last year. Filmed another Saturday night. Limb lines, bank poles, or trotlines are probably the best method baited with live bream to catch a flathead, and now is the perfect time!! Good luck
You have to have some live bait for flatheads. I'd say about 8" bullhead ( mudcats ) are the best bait.
@saltwaterinmyveins we mostly use bream because it's easiest for us to catch. I have tried Mudcats from time to time, but never very many. I think I'ma try catch a bunch some time and bait all my lines with them and see what happens
@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 If you get the chance, the mighty Altamaha ( Georgia’s Amazon) is a flathead Mecca!
@saltwaterinmyveins I see videos from over there. Big Bream too😳
I was told when I was young those big catfish and bullheads meat was mushly. Sure don't look it
Absolutely not. It all depends on how you clean them up.
This is the way I learned and the way I prefer my fish. Filets are flavorless in comparison.
Different for sure, but I like those too, lol
Yor wastin lotts uv meat. Tha heads makes good fish head soop.
Lol, I'll just donate my fish heads to ya. You'd be able to make a water tower full of fish head soup🤣🤣
@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 Yor wastin that skin and guts too. You can make catfish gut gravy outa that stuff. Just kiddin. I was just makin fun of the ones who say you're wastin meat.
@hillbillybeerdranker6678 Lol, I see it so much that I'm dull to it anymore. Always gonna be one guy. Try to help people out, get drug through mud doing it🤣🤣🤣
@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 That's true. Some of these people on the internet just sit around and criticize others. Most of em probably ain't never cleaned a fish or choked on a fish bone. I'm like you, I prefer to filet them.
@hillbillybeerdranker6678 I didn't say I preferred to fillet them. I'd rather eat steaks or bone in fish. Probably is time, and I don't get much. I mainly fillet because of that, and everyone around me just likes to gobble up fillets🤣🤣🤣
I can't believe these catfish cleaning tutorials, if you can't clean a fish you need to go to McDonald's
Well now, lol. If we already know, somebody taught us. Thing is there's more that don't know how than there are that does. If we help others in our Outdoors world it might help preserve it. If we don't help others, it hurts our world. We don't do all cleaning videos, but I'll tell you someone watches them because they are 100% our TOP performers. Now I'll say if they go to McDonald's, that's more for me and you🤣🤣, No disrespect meant, just explaining my reasons why
JESUS and his disciples probably did it the same way, maybe not catfish though. I think the bones add some flavor sometimes.
I figure they probably sun dried a lot of there's. Still done that way a lot over seas. Well, Catfish was Def off the menu in the old Testament, but a lot changed later down the road
@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 i think they actually were not allowed to eat catfish and eel.
`Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams, you may eat any that have fins and scales. But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales--whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water--you are to detest."
No scales on catfish and eel😬
It probably had to do with risk of parasites. Cant eat pigs or scavenger fish etc. You"ll never knew what it ate, and the doctor didnt have a fancy microscope to investigate your parasites.
Really strict Dutch Reformed guy i know says most of them wont eat anything that ate meat, to avoid parasites. Thats the way the Old Testament people lived, that the way i do is what he said.
Edit, i misread. You said def OFF, i mistaken it for def ON.
@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 l8tr
Thanks!!
You wasted the cheek meat
I recon so. Y'all get me a bunch on that one, lol. I mean that size I ain't ever cut much out of. Just didn't seem worth it to me. Maybe I do a video on just opp cheeks. Recon what recipe for that one. Maybe a court bullion
