Was time to do some Supertramp!! Next week we’ll set up a poll for you guys to vote in which song we hit from them next just because there seems to be so many options? Which songs should be on the poll?! Cheers guys! See you Friday! 🙌🏻🔥
True story. Mid 80s. I'm playing bass in a bar band. Supertramp is in Cleveland for a concert. About midnight people start requesting Supertramp songs, which we don't do. I look over at the bar and see John Helliwell at the bar. I say; hey, that guy knows some Supertramp. Turns out the whole band was there. Came up on stage. Owner locks the doors. We're doing shots and hanging/jamming with the band. We're there till like 5AM. A memory I'll never forget. Thanks, guys, for the reaction. Peace out.
@@xebio6 I don't recall specifics. They actually were jamming on other tunes or improvising on various chord changes. Just having fun. (And drinking A LOT!)
The atmosphere I feel: The train slowly gathers momentum, the hobo with the harmonica starts jamming, the clickety-clack from the tracks moves the song along until the cymbal whooshes the steam train slowly to a stop. Beautifully engineered (no pun intended)!
That cryin' harmonica intro gives me chills. Extraordinary musical arrangements on this song, and every song on this album. Breakfast in America was one of my favorite vinyl LPs as a kid in the 70's.
From the same album, the song “Breakfast in America” is amazing. Other songs to check out are “Bloody Well Right,” “Goodbye Stranger,” “Give a Little Bit.” “School,” “ Fool’s Overture.”
I'm so happy to see young people keeping this music ALIVE, I'm nearly 80years old and I think this music from 60s &70s unbeatable, keep on rocking guys.....
Absolutely! That song has layers (no pun intended). The "anti-hero" explains his point of view so honestly and directly, yet you wonder what made the guy turn out like that. And the guitar solo at the end is pure ear candy.
I'm not going to say you're wrong, Chris, as it's your opinion, but I disagree, partially. I agree with Crime of the Century being their best album, but for me their best song is either Give A Little Bit or Fools Overture.
Love them all, but Even In The Quietest Moments is my favorite album, with Crime a close 2nd. Just an amazing band. I wish Roger would allow them to reform and tour together after next year when concerts come back, but he seems content on his own. I wanna see Roger and Rick tour together again! Them and Pink Floyd could never get passed their differences, which was a shame for live music.
The summer of 1979. I remember it well. Bad Company just put out their album "Desolation Angels" and Supertramp came out with "Breakfast in America". These two albums were all over the radio, especially "Breakfast in America". They had four US radio hits reach the charts on it. The Logical Song #6, Take the Long Way Home #10, Goodbye Stranger #15 and the title track Breakfast in America #62. This is a Classic album. Roger Hodgson has a unusual but great voice. Y'all should purchase it.
I remember that well. I was still a kid back then but I remember hearing this on the radio when my parents were getting ready for work. I wound up getting the album. Very cool song and band.
I love that you get into the lyrics. Sometimes they are everything and the music carries it. A great song is Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty, amazing song. Here for the sauce 💜
I think they would get lost in the sauce and goosebumps for the sax. The album City To City is one of my favorite albums. It's rare to find an album that contains all great songs. In my humble opinion, this is one that does. Also Toad The Wet Sprocket album Dulcinea, Rick Derringer's solo album Derringer and a few more.
The genius behind this song is the layers all working together, especially during the chorus. The singer is singing one melody, the piano is playing another, and then the strings are playing yet another. The bass jumps between the three. All three play together at the same time and just fit like a glove. You can listen to just one layer and see how it blends with the others. That's a great arrangement.

I guess ya had to be there... Imagine growing up in the late 50’s, 60’s and 70’s when new genres of music were coming out every 2 or 3 years. Supertramp’s Breakfast in America was one of those really big moments for me when a band is going beyond guitars, synths, drums, etc., and introducing French horns, tuba’s, clarinet’s in a new type of pop music. What a great time to grow up musically. Really glad to hear new generations appreciating Rush, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, etc. Great job!
“Take The Long Way Home” still remains as one of my all time favorite tunes. It’s one of the first songs I remember hearing as a child and it has always stuck with me. I highly suggest “Bloody Well Right” by Supertramp! Why you ask? Because I’m here for the sauce! 🤘
I personally think y’all checking out the lyrics is so important and for a lot of songs the lyrics are the best part of them. So y’all keep it up I love it 😁.
First heard this song late one night driving home from a buddies house back around 1980 in Southern Indiana. Came to a T on that lonely gravel road. Take a right, get home a little later. Take a left, get home sooner. I took a right. 🎸
When I was a young man in the late 70s, we were recording a studio demo, these guys were using a rehearsal hall getting ready for this album tour. Incredibly talented. Check out Breakfast in America, the title cut.
Boys, this was my song. I was leaving a job that was killing me (under appreciated and over burdened) and heading home to a loveless marriage. I'd always stop and grab a cup of tea (wanting something stronger) and drive down to the beach, and watch the world go by before I had to leave. The first concert I ever saw was Supertramp at the Orphiem Theater in Boston in 1977. They opened with School and from the first note I was hooked on the band and have always been, just love their music and how they played.
Supertramp may have been the best "sounding" band of all time. Their recording quality was always impeccable. Layers of pleasant sound and fil. Classy to the extreme.
There was a time when I suspected that Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), Kevin Cronin (REO Speedwagon), Dennis DeYoung (Styx) and Geddy Lee might've all secretly used the same ghost vocalist.

Guys!! As everybody's saying, "Crime of the Century" is Supertramp's masterpiece, and you haven't even touched it! "School", "Rudy", the title cut -- it's hard to go wrong.
I always thought he sounded like John Anderson from Yes. They have high voices, without using a falsetto. Its not for everybody, but I love that style of singing.
What a song! School, Hide in Your Shell or anything off Crime of the Century next please. Cracking album with more of a progressive genre than commercially friendly pop like the later breakfast in america. Also some phenomenal lyrics and meanings.
Agree, Crime of the Century album starts good with School and then the entire album just gets better and better until it explodes in the final track Crime of the Century. A superb album
Supertramp is such a cool band. My favorite “Supertramp” memory was from a concert where they didn’t even play. It was a Texxas Jam in the late 70s in the summer - well over 100° on the floor of the Cotton Bowl. Van Halen had just finished their set, it’s mid-afternoon and set changes are taking forever. VH got everyone so pumped, but there’s a huge energy letdown. Then a dude breaks out his harmonica and plays the intro to Take the Long Way Home. Got everyone re-energized and soon after, Boston took the stage. I think of that every time I hear the song.
"Breakfast In America" has been sampled in recent times, and is solid, but my favorite of theirs is "Bloody Well Right". The opening of it is so bluesy.
Have just started watching you guys. I am 70 yrs old from Australia and absolutely love your reactions. I'm sure your grandparents have heard all this music. My grandkids are subjected to my old stuff. Alex, you would have fitted in to the early 70s with your look. 😊
Crisis what Crisis has 10 more pop songs vs Crime of the Century that I hold as their top album, but Even In the Quiets moments was a great album as well
If you listen to the meaning of this song it's about longing and regret. I remember being young like you and with the blink of an eye, you're 60! Keep listening to the music that moves you because in this crazy world, you need to tap into the emotions and power of your choice. You are the keeper of this great music and history that will be in your repertoire. Just keep digging the tunes for all of us who really get emotions in music and the soundtrack of life! You are both smart, effusive and really versed! Love the channel! Just subscribed 🥰
You guys need to delve into The Allen Parsons Project, “The Mysteries and Imagination of Edgar Allen Poe”. They took Poe’s poems and short stories and made them into musical masterpieces. Two of the best being, ‘The Raven’ and ‘Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether’. Definitely worth checking. It’ s both creepy, fun, and innovative, good luck!

I'd say you're bloody well right about that!
It is not even close. 'Crime of the Century' was the apex of Supertramp's work. Closely followed by 'Even in the Quietest Moments'
Fool's Overture, a masterpiece.
"Give a Little Bit" would be an excellent Supertramp to check out next. Love the lyrical breakdown. More please. Btw I stayed till the end. SAUCE ❤
"School" for sure AND "Bloody Well Right"!
Totally agree, A&A would enjoy School and Bloody Well Right the most
That whole album, pure fire. When" Dreamer " is the weakest song.... Just saying
@@michaelbaucom4019 Dreamer is amazing. Stellar album.
Always felt that Supertramp filled the gaps that 10cc left. Both thoughtful, and accomplished groups of talented folk, making
beautiful songs.
Breakfast in America is one of the best albums ever made. :)
So many people like Crime of the Century more.
This is the best.
"Goodbye Stranger" will be the A+ you are looking for. (here for the sauce)
Incredible guitar work on the way out.
Agree totally
Agree also!
Agree, Crime of the Century album starts good with School and then the entire album just gets better and better until it explodes in the final track Crime of the Century. A superb album
Crime of the Century is my favorite Supertamp album.
Child of Vision from this album is a sensational 🎧 song!
IMO, every track from "The Crime of the Century" album is worth reacting to.
"Breakfast In America" has been sampled in recent times, and is solid, but my favorite of theirs is "Bloody Well Right". The opening of it is so bluesy.
Guys, you gotta do School by Supertramp next!!
Have just started watching you guys. I am 70 yrs old from Australia and absolutely love your reactions. I'm sure your grandparents have heard all this music. My grandkids are subjected to my old stuff. Alex, you would have fitted in to the early 70s with your look. 😊
This Album is like a Greatest Hits. It's an incredible Album. Roger is a Fantastic song writer and vocalist.
Even thought this album is really good, "Crime of the Century" is still my fav.
Agreed
Pat Murray
Those are the 2 albums I had. They are all I needed.
@@irishgrl I have , almost, them all but they are the best.
Crisis what Crisis has 10 more pop songs vs Crime of the Century that I hold as their top album, but Even In the Quiets moments was a great album as well
Gordon Lightfoot - Sundown...good easy listening, alcohol-sipping song.
Oh ya, one of my personal favorites!
"Don't you look at my girlfriend...cuz she's the only one I got" Supertramp
"Not much of a girlfriend..."
jmartin28 never seem to get a lot.
If you listen to the meaning of this song it's about longing and regret. I remember being young like you and with the blink of an eye, you're 60! You are the keeper of this great music and history that will be in your repertoire. Just keep digging the tunes for all of us who really get emotions in music and the soundtrack of life!
Don't forget "the cask of Amontillado".
Some other time' or something off Pyramids and I robot
