It is a great river probably my favorite. I have watched your videos from the past and they are great. I was late into kayaking so was looking at kayak2hell to see the rivers we were planning to run.. Benny is still around well he just moved to Costa Rica but seen him a few weeks back at the Kan. Where are you now
@@Dyrgas I never got a GoPro so my video recording/editing hobby died off. I moved to Vancouver to work in 2010 and have been there since. Winters here are fantastic since there are a half dozen class III-IV rivers that flow then - all within 20-90 minutes of downtown. However, I miss the sheer joy and excitement that spring brings to paddling in the rest of Canada. Good to hear Ben hasn't disappeared.
It is very narrow and has caught a few people out before. I took a small kayak this time not as stable as a creek boat but the water level was ok, any higher and the undercut would be underwater making it more tight
I will be traveling through Banff once a month from the States on my way to Calgary. Heading up tomorrow. Anything good running right now? Any chance the Mistaya will be at least very low runnable for a scenic run if nothing else? It would be great to find some people up there to paddle with if you're up for it. Thanks.
Hi, Not sure the Mistaya is runnable I passed that way a couple of weeks ago very low. you would be scraping rocks and the parkway is pretty snowcovered now. The only place around running is the Kananaskis River. it is dam controlled releasing for 3 hours a day at the moment. I am out of action for the moment getting some physio but do a post on facebook group. Calgary Area Whitewater (Calpaddle) i am sure you will find some people. most probably at the weekend as the temperature will go above 0 C .
@@Dyrgas thanks..I did post there and I do plan on Kananaskis surf on Sunday, solo or maybe I'll run into others to join. What times does the water get there to start surfing? I couldn't exactly tell from the dam schedule using time ending.
@@OhioWhitewater Just looking at the schedule it will be on at 2pm and takes about 20 minutes to hit the widowmaker (put-in) it will take about 45 to an hour to reach the take-out at canoe meadows but plenty of rapids on the way down. I am pretty sure there will be some people there on Sunday you can join up with. it is a pretty safe river for solo and there will definitely be some river surfers at the mountain wave
@@Dyrgasany chance Mistaya is running this weekend? If so I may be able to paddle Saturday if you're free to show me down it. I'll be visiting Calgary. Where's a good place to find beta for it?
@@OhioWhitewater Mistaya is a bit low at the moment. it tends to come in July and August. paddlingmaps.com is a great source of information for beta. Hoping the sheep river is in this weekend. need rain which is in the forecast
Thanks for this. I paddled Mistaya canyon in 2008-2009 and was so impressed by its beauty and uniqueness. How I miss living and paddling in Alberta.

@@kayak2hell you should take a trip back sometime. Definitely enjoyable the spring melt
Very beautiful scenery. I was afraid you’d get scratched up a little going through the notch. Looked super narrow
