My uncle an cousin help build X-15 in Southern California. Close tolerance on every part, build required only one body rivet hole be drilled by every drill bit. With thousands of rivets there were thousands of drill bits, only been used to drill a single hole. When my cousin came to visit us, he gave me few of these drill bits used to build X-15. I still have them.
Yes, the two primary actors that we recognize today, Charles Bronson and Mary Tyler Moore, were at the beginnings of their careers, so were not listed as the biggest stars at the time this was released. The main star was David McLean, and his biggest claim to fame was that he was The Marlboro Man. He later died of lung cancer.
@x15galmichelleevans McLean died at 73 years old and Bronson also died of cancer at 81 years old. Several other actors in the movie who died in a similar age group. Were diagnosed with smoking related illnesses that were responsible for their deaths.
@@ChristopherWHerbert Amazingly, David McLean survived for 31 years after first being diagnosed with cancer in 1964. During the years after his diagnosis, he became an instrumental advocate for the elimination of cigarette ads on television, which took effect on 2 January 1971.
Growing up, the X-15 was my first model i ever built. My father got me a book on the X-15 for my 8th birthday. This just rekindled my thoughts and interest in the X-15 again. I never knew about this movie until today, January 16th, 2025.

There were twelve X-15 pilots who flew in the program. Eight of them received astronaut wings for missions that exceeded 50 miles in altitude. Two of those pilots flew three such suborbital spaceflights: Joe Walker and Joe Engle. The other six only flew astronaut missions a single time each.
I was 6 years old when this came out. Amazingly, I still remember parts of it. By modern standards, this film comes off as an absolute melodrama. One can practically see a theater full of X-15 nerds parroting the lines, filling in with boos and hisses. But this kind of over-acting was par for the course in the day. It's a bit hard to watch - other than star-spotting the actors and actresses who would be seen in scores of movies and TV shows in decades to come.
In actuality, the X-15 reached past Mach 5 to an unofficial absolute speed of 4,750mph or close to Mach 6.25... that explosion while tethered to show the XLR99 engine's power to the press, was based on the initial test of the rocket engine attached to the X15 with Scott Crossfield at the controls...
The top speed achieved by the X-15 was Mach 6.70, or 4,520 mph. Pete Knight flew this mission on 3 October 1967 in the X-15A-2. It was the final flight of that aircraft. Six weeks later, X-15 no. 3 was lost in an accident that killed test pilot Michael Adams. The no. 1 X-15 continued flying for another year before the program came to an end with 199 research missions.

The only X-15 pilot who made it into the film is Milt Thompson, although he was not flying the aircraft at that point. He served as the NASA technical advisor on the film, and went on to become the 9th X-15 pilot with his first flight in October 1963. He can be seen walking into the frame at 1:35:02. several other members of the X-15 team were in the film, such as some technicians featured in the control room scenes.
There was an episode of Call to Glory that featured the X-15, however, none of the scenes from this movie were ever used in that television series. The TV episode loosely was based on the real-life incident where Michael Adams lost his life in an X-15 crash on 15 November 1967.

I was thinking the same thing about 10 minutes into the movie. It’s almost like they are promoting smoking. One cigarette after another. If they only knew how bad they stink..
@glennchristie2316 especially that scene close to the opening of the movie. When MTM pulls the car off the highway. Just so she can park and have a cigarette. Glamor at its best.
During the X15's development and the designers hit the problem of nose buffering at pre mach 1 speeds. The British were also in the race with jet engine inventor Sir Frank Whittle and remarked in passing we'd cured the problem and although starting the design stage late we were very close to becoming the 1st to break the sound barrier. In no time the American government contacted their British counterparts and said the Russian's were also close and much like the later space race we simply couldn't allow the communists to gain the upper hand so perhaps a fact sharing joint collaboration would be a good idea? Aviation designers were sent to England to see our so far top secret prototype and test flights were cancelled with the idea we'd later go and see the X15, despite Sir Frank revealing his solutions the the American problem the return invertation was never extended and weeks later to the surprise of the British government not to mention Sir Frank the X15 broke mach 1 with the British wing design in place. Days later we reached the same speed but sadly for all his enginuity Frank's efforts go uncredited...
