During the X15's development and the designers hit the problem of nose buffering at pre mach 1 speeds. The British were also in the race with jet engine inventor Sir Frank Whittle and remarked in passing we'd cured the problem and although starting the design stage late we were very close to becoming the 1st to break the sound barrier. In no time the American government contacted their British counterparts and said the Russian's were also close and much like the later space race we simply couldn't allow the communists to gain the upper hand so perhaps a fact sharing joint collaboration would be a good idea? Aviation designers were sent to England to see our so far top secret prototype and test flights were cancelled with the idea we'd later go and see the X15, despite Sir Frank revealing his solutions the the American problem the return invertation was never extended and weeks later to the surprise of the British government not to mention Sir Frank the X15 broke mach 1 with the British wing design in place. Days later we reached the same speed but sadly for all his enginuity Frank's efforts go uncredited...

I was 6 years old when this came out. Amazingly, I still remember parts of it. By modern standards, this film comes off as an absolute melodrama. One can practically see a theater full of X-15 nerds parroting the lines, filling in with boos and hisses. But this kind of over-acting was par for the course in the day. It's a bit hard to watch - other than star-spotting the actors and actresses who would be seen in scores of movies and TV shows in decades to come.
