One thing you could do before Buu saga is introduce them to early Dragon Ball in a single movie. It's Dragon Ball movie 4: The Path to Power.
The animation is on par with the Fusion Reborn movie and it's the only time Yamcha is EVER threatening

Bardock and the trunks “movie” didn’t feel like movies because they were tv specials. So basically just longer episodes.
