As a fellow member of the Small Hand + Self-Taught club, I really appreciate Tina.

She's one of my bass heroes. Very crafty, melodic player. Most of the "hooks" in Talking Heads songs are in the bass lines. She started out as a fingerstyle acoustic guitarist -- hence the "play the E string with your thumb" peculiarity. But most of the time she's clearly playing with a pick.

I thought it was just me. I always see her using a pick.

Imagine forming a new band and one of your first songs is Psycho Killer with *that* iconic bassline. Amazing

Great video. Her bass lines are proof that a great groove doesn’t have to be super complex.

This was great, I always thought she was underrated as a bassist so I definitely enjoyed this video

Talking Heads was a really creative band to day nothing comes close to what they were doing.

Self learning bass and I also naturally play PK with my thumb like her. . .girl power!

Tina Weymouth contradicts so many cliches we as bass players have to cope with:
    - Groove hard!... No. Just stay in the pocket and play consistent.
    - Jazz Bass! Pee Bass!...No. Anything with thick strings will do the job.
    - Know your fretboard, learn arpeggios!...No. Just pick the central notes and do the job.
    - Variations!...No. Simplicity and stubborness.
    - Cool and charismatic stage presence! Be more like Flea!...No. It's ok to move awkward and quirky, or hardly at all.
    - The coolest and biggest amp! Ampeg!...No. Anything that does not break on stage.

I feel like a lot of this goes for Talking Heads as a band. They did care about being showy, they just wanted it to work. And it's fantastic and unique because of it.

You can't be more cool and charismatics than the bassist from Talking Heads

Early on, she did that thing with her thumb on the low string, picking the other strings with her fingers. If you watch her doing this, she swings her elbow out to a completely different position for using the fingers. This looks awkward and would probably cause physical injury if repeated too much.
Oddly, as the band got deeper into using funk elements, she used the pick more. She never really adopted the Larry Graham thumb technique.
She really supercharged the sound of the band.

There is no point in criticising Weymouth's style or technique. However she got there, she definitely absolutely got there. Her bass line on "Once In a Lifetime" mesmerized me for years, and still does.

People don't play the open strings for tone consistency. Tina, and you in the example you played, have no consistency issues. Therefore there's no reason except convention for you not to play open strings

I was late to see and enjoy this! I have so many Bass player TH-cam subscriptions! This channel is excellent education, and humorous! I will recommend "pertybass" channel. He is from the "middle east " and plays modern music unfamiliar to me, but always Interesting. Thank you very much for sharing!
