  • In his keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr spoke about rules-based order in the West Philippine Sea, also known as the South China Sea. He said the Philippines will do "whatever it takes" to protect its sovereignty. CNA's Leong Wai Kit also spoke with Jonathan Miller, a senior fellow and director of foreign affairs, national defence and national security at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, who shared more on China-Philippines relations.

Well said President Marcos Jr. in reiterating the loss of any Filipino officials & civilians wherever they might be in the Philippines, Taiwan or anywhere, by way of unwilling or being killed by the PRC or any other country, is a declaration of the Philippines & US to respond to what I see as world conflict scenarios. The Mutual Defense Treaty between the Republic of the Philippines and the United States of America (MDT) was signed on August 30, 1951, by their representatives in Washington, D.C. The treaty has eight articles and requires both nations to support each other if another country attacks the Philippines or the United States. These will be like Israel vs Iran, Ukraine vs Russia & now Philippines vs China.

This Filipino President, Marcos, represent hundreds of millions of Filipinos who want to legally and rightfully protect the country's territorial rights. God is the witness on rightfulness of this action. We call on the world to reflect and resonate on this message. Philippines, a very peaceful ang great world partner, is rightfully protecting its legal territorial rights. Surely everyone can understand and resonate on how fundamental and important this is.
How can China claim it is a benevolent force if it encroaches the legal territorial rights of other countries?
China has shown its malice and illegal actions in the West Philippine Sea against the Filipino people and have destroyed the livelihood of Filipino fishermen there and endagered the long term energy stability of Philippines.
If China wants to be respected as a benevolent global power, then it has to respect other countries' legal rights.

Why the Phillippines failed to follow it? United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). ANNEX VII. ARBITRATION. Article 5. Procedure. *Unless the parties to the dispute otherwise agree,* the arbitral tribunal shall determine its own procedure, assuring to each party a full opportunity to be heard and to present its case. China's position is not unique and is in line with some Western countries. China *declared that it does not accept any of the compulsory dispute settlement procedures for all categories of disputes listed in Article 298(1)(a-c).* This means China has opted out of using ITLOS, ICJ, and arbitration for these types of disputes with other UNCLOS parties. However, their declaration does not preclude them from agreeing to other non-compulsory methods of dispute settlement on a case-by-case basis.
      .
China already said many times that South China Sea (SEA) disputes return to the table for negotiations and return to the track of bilateral negotiations but the Philippines choose to risk their fishermen and journalist life in the disputed area to provoke China.
      .
      .
Did US ratify and signed UNCLOS Annex VIII, Article 298? NO.
      .
Article 298 of the International law explicitly said _"a state may declared in writing that it does not accept any one or more other ways the law proposes to settle territorial disputes". this might sound controversial but in reality nearly 40 countries did that. Australia, Argentina, Canada, Denmark the list goes on to speak nothing of the U.S. who did not ratify the law in first place so in say no to compulsory arbitration on sovereignty China has plenty of company in the Western world.._

Those who don't understand: if China takes over the Philippines Sea, they could impose tariffs or even block the transportation of goods between countries. This sea is crucial for global shipping and trade routes, facilitating the movement of goods between Asia and other parts of the world. It supports regional fishing industries with its rich marine resources and contains significant reserves of oil and natural gas, which are vital for energy exploration and extraction. Additionally, the Philippines Sea holds strategic military importance, providing key naval and air routes. It is also home to diverse marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and various marine species, which are essential for environmental balance and biodiversity.

Finally, the test has arrived in the ASEAN region. Can we teach peace to the world if differences are normal or trapped because of the competition of these differences?
ASEAN is very unique, Monarchy, Democracy, Communists, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism can live side by side in this region.
Will our region succeed or fail just like other regions?
If ASEAN fails too, in the next 100 years there will be no peaceful region on earth

PH is just imposing its right according to a rule-based international law. It is not claiming the entirety of South China Sea, only those within its Exclusive Economic Zone in which the China is violating.

How can China claim it is a benevolent force if it encroaches the legal territorial rights of other countries?
China has shown its malice and illegal actions in the West Philippine Sea against the Filipino people and have destroyed the livelihood of Filipino fishermen their and endagered the long term energy stability of Philippines.
If China wants to be respected as a benevolent global power, then it has to respect other countries' legal rights.
Otherwise, it will always be scorned as a global fascist threat.

Philippines is a third world cesspool and their president instead of serving his people is hellbent on turning his country into just another Ukraine just so that his ill gotten wealth is not frozen by the US regime.

As a US citizen, I’ve noticed that the US military and people have always placed our lives and money to defend other countries. But at the end will those countries defend the US people too? No one wants war and never has. During both world wars the US never wanted to fight. But at the end it had no choice. Millions of lives were lost in all sides. If I have to give my life to protect others , those I fight for have to fight for freedom and make sure it was and is worth it. Our lives depend on it. The US is a good country, we get involved not because we want to but have too. The you is ran by the minorities, there is millions of people from all over that move here. So everyone has a stake on the future of the Philippines and other regions

These are disputed islands militarized by China in reaction to Obama 2011 Pivot to Asia Pacific. It's for China National Security facing the 350 US military bases in Japan, Korea, Philippines and Australia. A few Pinoy fishermen denied of fishing near the disputed islands is NOTHING compared to what endured 10000 people in a Pacific Island in the 1950s. In the name of US national security due to possibility of nuclear war with USSR, nuclear experiments were conducted on 10000 innocent islanders. So these Pinoy fishermen should stop whinning. They are not dying of cancer like these 10000 islanders.
