    Thanks for the advice! I’ve got a ton of stencils. This is one technique I plan to use!

      Ah, I have another question, unrelated to the previous one. I made up a batch of bole and didn’t use all of it. Is that good indefinitely or will it go bad because of the rabbit skin glue? Right now I’m just storing it in the refrigerator.

    Thanks Ruth! Raised gesso will now added to my next fun with gesso day. I dm'd on insta an image of my first attempt at making a painting using only bole. Question now is, ahem, how to seal the surface since I'm not gilding it. Hadn't thought this through...Happy hols, and looking forward to the rest of the fantastic advent tree.

      @@michaelflint4159 Hi Michael thank you. I mistakenly responded in the general comments...just to say I'm trying to protect the natural sheen of the burnished bole, so trying various wax approaches. Jury still out....

    That looks wonderful. I would love it if you could do a video on the cheap cheap gold leaf that you can get on eBay for about £5 and if you have any tips for how to make that look as best as it can.

    How did you achieve the leaves and brunches being lighter and smoother?

    • @RuthTappinGilder
      @RuthTappinGilder  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I sanded the gesso then added the red bole, then after gilding they got burnished, so they stand out from the matt background.

    Nice work- how do you make Gesso putty ?

    • @RuthTappinGilder
      @RuthTappinGilder  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its the same as gesso, just stronger glue and much more whiting.

  • @elainelee6741

    Is the gesso that you use the same as the gesso that you put on your canvas?.

    • @RuthTappinGilder
      @RuthTappinGilder  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi, gesso for canvas is made with modern glue, pva etc. I'm using traditional rabbit skin glue to make this traditional gesso. Have a look at this video on how to make traditional gesso th-cam.com/video/yS8gd2jy9gU/w-d-xo.html

    I'm thinking of doing some pastiglia on a painting. I've got all the stuff I need to make gesso, but haven't done it before. Is gesso putty just gesso with more whiting? How much?

    • @RuthTappinGilder
      @RuthTappinGilder  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You make a stronger glue 5-1 and just keep adding whiting untill you get to something that doesn't drip

    Hello Michael, thank you. I'm trying to find a way to preserve the natural burnished sheen of the bole, and shellac, alas, will give too high a sheen. I'm experimenting with wax suspended in alkyd. Jury is still out.

    I make traditional gesso for my egg tempera paintings. Did you make the putty…just letting it stiffen up or is that a product you buy?

    • @RuthTappinGilder
      @RuthTappinGilder  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just a stronger glue mix with much more whiting.

    Can you gild over plaster of Paris? Since you are putting a layer of gesso first, I guess that probably means yes.

    • @RuthTappinGilder
      @RuthTappinGilder  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you can, here is a video about gilding plaster. th-cam.com/video/tpGNYcg0USk/w-d-xo.html
      Hope that helps.
