Yes. Not hearing every note Kanami plays has been a frustration for me also. I was six feet from the front of her amp during a concert and was blown away by how much work she does in just one song. But for whatever reason, probably her commitment to balance and respect of other musicians, she plays hundreds of notes that never get heard. I recommended an early banger “The non-fiction days” which I still stand by as a brilliant song. However, I’ll add a new on for you: “From Now On,” official music video. It’s an instrumental. Kanami plays out front for nearly the entire piece. And there’s plenty of playtime from the other members as well. A couple of Akane’s drum fills are just…I wish I played drums just to steal her fills!
Great 2nd song to listen to, shows serious skills and gives a great view of this incredible band. And as you said, Yokohama is in fact a real location and my home town since 1986. It is great place to live. 😄
Kanami's lead guitar nearly always panned to the right, and Misa's bass to the left - so, usually knowing that you can pick each out more easily, even amidst the chaos.
I think the lead singer Saiki is trying to make the drummer smile or mess up at first ! The whole band circles Akane sometimes and she always smiles but rarely messes up =)
Great reaction and please do continue rocking with the Maids. If you have the opportunity, go and see them live. I've seen them many times live and I did fly to Japan to attend this one. This was a AWESOME show. Many are going to suggest "Freedom" Official Live at Line Cube Shibuya. Who am I to argue....LOL. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
Best band this short century. If you want more Kanami on guitar, I highly suggest Puzzle Live official video. Band-Maid are definitely more rock than metal, but they do mix in metal into their music when they feel like it. Cheers, friend.
Thanks for the reaction and comments. You just heard the ultimate F*OFF! song. These ladies are FIRE!!!!! Check out Shambles, No God, Black Hole, Different...to name a few if you want to hear Akane(drummer) aka Gorilla go into absolute King-Kong mode. Cheers!
Lyrics written by the singer Saiki. Usually the lyrics are written by Miku (red rose) although Saiki has written a few. Akane the drummer is a delight to watch when there are close ups. Very expressive and always smiling.
Band-Maid is a hard rock band. They have always called themselves a hard rock band as well. If you want to see Akane's drumming, you need to watch either Freedom or the Lollapalooza version of Dice and Hate as the festival cameraperson seemed to be fixed on the her for most of the concert...which is still not a bad thing as she's an excellent drummer.
Drummer Akane (Ah-kah-neh) Hirose (Here-ro-seh) is a Tama-endorsed artist and plays a Star Bubinga kit (top of the line). She plays a lot of metal techniques but she does some very cool and advanced things, like highly syncopated and varied double bass patterns, not just straight, fast, 16th notes (although she does that, too). But she has stylistic range and really well-rounded, refined chops (she's a graduate of the Tokyo School of Music)..The Maids' music incorporates a lot of metal influence and other rock sub-genres like alternative/modern/classic hard rock, punk, some prog leanings--and even some fusion and jazz. They're very difficult to peg into a particular rock sub-genre. They're kind of their own thing. She does use Evans heads, which are tuned to defined pitches. That's probably why it sounds more musical. Her drum sound is very punchy and well defined but with a good deal of resonance. The bass drum has a lot of attack but it's not overly "clicky" like a lot of modern metal, which I think is totally overdone. I also played Tama for a long time and, back in the day, the brand was popular with metal and rock drummers. Not sure what the status is today, but I see fewer Tama kits. But definitely a great brand who were known for their excellent rock kits.
Kanami Tono's guitar is a PRS Custom 24 and she is a PRS featured artist. But you need to check out rhythm guitarist, Miku Kobato's Zemaitis A24MF-FP "Flappy Pigeon" guitar, a custom signature model that Zemaitis designed with Miku's input. Yes, metal-heads swear that Band-Maid isn't "Real Metal" and lose out by ignoring this great band. However, Maidiacs know Band-Maid as a Heavy Metal band and can even tell you which heavy metal they identify as: *Polonium!* Po!
The sound mixing is kinda their style. There are songs where the bass is a little more in the background. Others where the lead guitar is a little more in the background. But often all 3 are fairly equal. As far as the drummer goes everyone will recommend Freedom for the drum solo. But honestly I feel like "From Now On" showcases the lead guitarist and drummer quite nicely. It's also one of the best instrumentals ever written.
To check out Akane, the drummer, I would suggest "FREEDOM" which has a drum solo or "from now on" which is a great performance and she gets more screen time. Yes, the lead guitarist, Kanami, does do a lot of cool stuff that kind of gets buried. They did put out an instrumental version of their album "Unseen World" that allows you to better hear the craziness going on behind the vocals.
Yokohama is a suburb of Tokyo (if you can even call it that considering the sizes of both - like calling San Diego a burb to Los Angeles but still - That is Yokohama) Yokohama in addition to being a large city, also serves as the port of Tokyo. Cruise lines, Container ships, Commercial Fishing vessels etc. Yokohama is in Kanagawa Prefecture (closest comparison would be what we call County). Kanami, the lead guitar, is from this prefecture as well born and raised
You noticed that Kanami’s guitar is low in the mix 👍 Funny thing is that Kanami is usually the one who choose the mixes and tone of the livesound, as far as I know.
It's true, BAND-MAID seldom slow down at all; not a lot of room to for reactors to talk over the song. Pausing is must, so don't worry about. Conversely, imagine how hard it must be for the lead singer, Saiki. There are some songs that I don't even understand how/when she breathes at all. See the song 'Blooming' as an example.
This music reminds me of... wait... let me think... some group... I know. Band-Maid reminds me of... Band-Maid. After more than 10 years performing in over 400 concerts with a 130 song catalog... I guess they deserve to have their own sound -- Maid Music! 🤘😂
You may have come into it with a mistaken mind-set, as many do - they're a "hard rock" band, but with MANY different influences. Some are more "metal", some are more funky, some are classic rock, and some are distictly "metal" - and that's just for starters, because they also have quieter ballads, and much more, AND their "nemesis" Band-Maiko, which has classic Japanese influences. While I would say, with confidence, that they don't have a "bad" song, I will say that some will hit different folks in different ways.
Thank you for continuing your journey down the Pigeon hole , if you like anime BAND-MAID has some songs connected to animes , song Glory for Yu -Gi - Oh variens , song Different for 3rd season Log Horizon , Song Sense for Platinum End , Song Shambles for closing of Kengan Ashura .
BAND-MAID has several instrumental songs. And if you want to hear the instruments I assume its best with a music movie. One of the best are "From now on". They have an official version. Also "Onset" and "Without holding back", but it is harder to find good versions as the official ones are on a Bluray that is not uploaded to their site.
The Maids are definitely more rock/hard rock than metal, although you can hear hints of metal in some songs. "Former" drummer here too (once a drummer, always a drummer, brother), so I'll suggest the omv for "Secret My Lips". It's one of my favorite Akane tracks. Thanks much for checkin' out Band-Maid! 🕊
Thank you for your wonderful comment. The lead guitarist of this group has composed over 130 songs, and the rhythm guitarist writes the lyrics. They play a wide variety of rock music. There are no boring songs. I think the performance and singing skills of all members are world class. Please listen to our latest song, "Bestie (Official Music Video)". I'm sure you will be amazed.
Band-maid have some music to series and 1 movie (as far as I know). "Choose me" was used in the "Peacemaker" series (w/John Cena). It was also used in the movie "Kate" (Netflix w/Woody Harrelson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead) together with "Blooming" (one of my top 3). They also did a couple of songs for anime-shows. First it was "Different" from "Log Horizon" (2020) "Sense" for the "Platinums end" (2021) series. last they made "Shambles" to "Kengan Asura" (2023). They even got made an anime style video named "Unleash!!!" in 2022, just before they started their first US tour. It's kind of a throw back to former videos, with some familiar scenes for us fans.

Since you're asking for advice, I would encourage you to listen to Thrill. A little background: In the beginning they weren't gaining traction in Japan, so their management company had decided to release a single, and then drop them. The B side of that single was Thrill, and it was a huge hit. The rest is history. Listen to either the music video or live, but I prefer the video to live because it's cleaner and easier to hear the individual contributions.
I have two suggestions for you to listen to from Band-Maid. "Moratorium", the official live video from the Tokyo Zepp Arena concert, and "Manners/Black Hole", a two-fer official live video from an on-line okyu-ji (concert) they did without a live audience during the Covid-pandemic shutdown in Japan. The still rock hard on both videos. "Manners" is a pure funk groove, and then "Black Hole" is an incredibly fast tempo frenetic song which I would consider controlled chaos. The video is an early glance of how versatile Band-Maid is. The more Band-Maid videos you react to, the larger your subscriptionbase will grow because we Maidiacs are very loyal to the band and because we love it when new reactors discover the band we all fell in love with years ago.
Geography facts - Yokohama is a city just south of Tokyo. Its a port city and has 4 million people. So it is bigger than every city in the US except Los Angeles and New York. (Tokyo has 37 million people - more than every US state except California).
React to FREEDOM or Don't You Tell Me to see more of the drummer. I would call this band a rock band more than metal although they do cross genres into blues, rock, metal, and more. Nice reaction.
BAND-MAID are not a Metal band. For all-female Japanese Metal, you want NEMOPHILA (drummer MURATA TAMU has an endorsement deal with TAMA) Try OIRAN, the latest live version. And especially, LOVEBITES (HOLY WAR, live). If you’re a drummer, do the recent OMVs for FROM NOW ON (an instrumental) and SHAMBLES, an anime commission, as well as FREEDOM, from the same concert as DOMINATION, as it has an AKANE drum solo. For the mellower side of BAND-MAID, try their recent collaboration with Mike Enzinger of Incubus. KANAMI’s guitar is usually a bit far back in the mix, relegating her trademark arpgeggiations to the role of sonic textures supporting the rest of the instrumentals.

U want drums , freedom live
Akane's playing in this song tops anything she did on freedom. IMHO
@@Puyax01Totally agree. And it's not even close. So many songs where she's doing really cool, difficult things.
One Word *BAND-MAID / Freedom* = *Akane* Drums 😊

Yes… In roughly 2 minutes anyone can find that they define themselves as “rock”. I can’t believe how they constantly get called a metal band.
I went in conpletely blind and I'm not sure what made me expect metal. Not a bad thing though!!
Try BLOOMING OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO
🤘Love, Band Maid!!!🤘They do hover more around the Hard Rock genre.

Gotta love when Saiki sings..."Don't give a shit no more!"
Haha :D

Thank you!!! Being a port makes sense with the other scattered things I have learned.
Band Maid doing Band Maid things.
They're growing on me after only two songs!
If you want to watch the drummer, check out their official live video of a song called "Freedom." Akane has a solo in that song/video.
You noticed that Kanami’s guitar is low in the mix 👍 Funny thing is that Kanami is usually the one who choose the mixes and tone of the livesound, as far as I know.
Lol, the Maids were pissed at someone
It does sound that way!! :D

We all have the same complaint about Kanami not being loud enough in the mix although in this song I wish Akane's drumming was louder.
React to FREEDOM or Don't You Tell Me to see more of the drummer. I would call this band a rock band more than metal although they do cross genres into blues, rock, metal, and more. Nice reaction.
Kanami intentionally requests that she be low in the mix to avoid overpowering the rest of the members.
