I raced Superbikes from 1980 thru 1985 in AFM, got my AMA procard in 1984 and raced two seasons thru 1985. Freddy was already in europe in the (now) MotoGP.
I raced an 1981 CB750F that I built myself with little help but I was a hobby club rider. Late in 1984 when Team Honda went to intercepters, I bought an old HRC 751cc motor (like in this video) and it all changed. I began to win the club races that were always won my AMA/AFM club riders. Long live old school..it was an absolute blast!.

You still got the old stuff? These stories make my heart beat faster, knowing that some guys from back in the day could actually buy this unobtanium stuff, as if I would talk to Yamaha to buy their 2018 tech. unbelievable! Great story, thanks!

I raced at a WERA national at Charlotte in ‘77 and some kid from Louisiana showed up with 7 bikes. He won 6 races . Next time I saw him was Daytona 1980. Of course it was Freddie an he was riding for Honda.

In the early 1980s I was stationed in Germany with the Army and was running a 1977 Honda Gold-Wing GL1000. I put a GB-1 fairing on it, Crowser saddle bags and and rode all over Bavaria's autobahns. There were many sections of the autobahn that there was no speed limit. At 100 mph the Wing's front end got real light and became downright dangerous. I always dressed with full leathers, full face helmet, gauntlet gloves and riding boots. I had a Polizei friend that I rode with that had a !977 Yamaha XS 750 Turbo. Our machines were well matched for speed and we had a great time riding two wheels up in Germany.

Fast Freddie Spencer. The best motorcycle racer ever. Apart from Burt Munro.

Those three Team Honda racers in my humble opinion invented the "Sport" bike segment. Kudos to Honda and the brillant CB motorcyle. Kudos to these men for racing them!

I used to hire this vid from the local video shop when I was a kid. I thought I would never see it again because I'd forgotten the name of it. Until now.

I greatly miss this era in motorcycling. This was when I came up in the sport. I was deeply saddened by the actions of Spencer a few years back. He burned a lot of people. W/O a word, he just slinked away in the night. For all the sport did for him. He failed it, miserably. Flyin Fred Merkel, Wes Cooley, Lawson, etal. Good Times :-)...

    That's what I call SOUND!!!
Fuck those new R1s putting out 180+HP, this here is fucking awesome!

  • @KingSams0n

Well, to be honest, only thing that impresses me is the development in terms of suspension.
Enginewise I'm not impressed by 180-200HP engines, considering that the early Kawa superbikes put out 150 horses already, and that was 30 to 35 years ago.
Especially because it is, more or less, the same shit.
And then there is personal taste.
To each his own, I suppose, but to me, old Kawas instead of new plastic bikes all day long.
