No one played like Heifetz he was superb beyond the fantastic technique, he played with real emotion! Super Musical! What a great soul. God Bless You Mr. HEIFETZ!
Heifetz ' secret is in his bowing . Unbelievable Incredible ! Perfect intonataion no matter what range he is in ! Heifetz had it all and he makes great, always interesting music !
Yes and his entire physical mechanics- his posture, his left hand, the way he holds his instrument and his concentrated effort (often misinterpreted as “coldness” account for his beautiful playing.
Agree. I can smell the hot bow resin though the ages. These days, Gil Saham uses a lot of bow. Its the secret to the old fashioned sound of Oistrak, Milstein,, and Heifetz above all.
I can name more than half of the then-kids in the movie orchestra, courtesy of conversations 20 years ago with then-living members of the orchestra. (Edited as I get or find new information) Front row: left to right: Virginia Ellis-Beaver, Edwina Pierse-Johnson, Lewis Elias, Felix Sitjar, Robert Beach King, David Amsterdam, Alan Cunningham, Mary Louise Zeyen Second row: Catherine Hoffmann, David Lipow, Avis Puille , Cyril Shipro, Shirley Cornell, Camille Hudson, , Joyce Robbins, Elliot Rapaport, unknown, Barbara Simons, unknown, Richard Berres, Channing Robbins. Third row: Tom Facey, Agnes McIntyre, Peggy Zeyen, Miriam Nadel-Karn, Gordon Schoenfield, Mitchell Lurie, George Smith, Beverly Riestel, Mary Ann Gaskill, unknown contrabass players. Fourth Row, third from left: Morris Boltuch. The best-known of these would be Rapaport, who became an eminent cardiologist. The best-known of those who went on to musical careers would probably be Channing Robbins, who taught at Juilliard for many years, and Mitchell Lurie, who had his own line of products for clarinet.
I found a video of Rubenstein playing Ballade g minor coda on Instagram, but I cannot find the source. I looked through all of your videos too. I can send you the link if you need it
The movie is from 1939: “They Shall Have Music”. An inner city settlement house is in financial trouble with the “Big Bad Banker” and guest star Violinist Jascha Heifetz performs the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Youth Orchestra and saves the day.
In 1947, eight years after "They Shall Have Music" appeared, Heifetz was in another Hollywood film titled simply "Carnegie Hall," in which he gives a stunning performance of the Tchaikovsky violin concerto (an abridged version of the 1st movement only, but with his own cadenza). It was filmed inside Carnegie Hall in New York City, I believe with Fritz Reiner conducting - not sure if it was the Chicago Symphony Orchestra or New York Philharmonic. From the movie “they shall have music”. There were so many great violinists, then there is Jascha Heifetz, the one and only!
