- The Modular Fiddle is a platform for highly customizable string instruments! I'll talk you through some of the options and variations, and answer some basic questions about the Modular Fiddle.
The Modular Fiddle began as a simple 4-string violin. Now it's a full fledged platform that can make 4 or 5 string violins or violas in three lengths, hardanger fiddles, a viola da gamba, and other combinations of the above.
If you would like to build a Modular Fiddle, start by purchasing a kit from my website. This ensures you get the best parts and the latest print files. No 3D printer? No problem, you can also order a kit of printed parts. Check out the Modular Fiddle kits here: openfabpdx.com/product-catego...
If you would prefer I build it for you, we can do that! Just purchase the off-the-shelf parts kit, the printed parts kit, and the assembly labor.
In addition, using the Modular Fiddle platform, I am able to quickly create custom instruments. Completely custom instrument crafting has never been this accessible! Get in touch to inquire about a custom design. openfabpdx.com/contact

I know I've told you this, but I'll tell you again, I absolutely adore this project.
Thanks! I do, too, not gonna lie. I’m very happy with how much it has grown in the last few months!
Cool!
What print volume dimensions would be needed to print body and neck?
It's hard to say exactly, because the shape of the bed will determine if the parts fit, in addition to the overall size. The Ender 3 can just barely fit the parts, but you have to add a couple mm to your printer definition in your slicer. I use a Makergear M2 with a build volume of 200x250x200 (x,y,z). This also just barely fits.
How do the cad files for the Viola Da Gamba Cost?
They are $12.50 usd, and available (among other cool things) here: openfabpdx.com/product-category/violins/3d-files/
My son (6) is very interested in violin especially the modular fiddle, I printed one in 2020 for myself. Has anyone successfully printed one @1/4 size or will that mess with the tone too much? Just wanted to know before I import it into Rhino and attempt to scale it down.
Hey Grant -- good question! No one has made a 1/4 size yet. Unfortunately it would require a redesign from the ground up. Different violin sizes don't scale exactly as you might think they do. That said, if you find the important dimensions for a 1/4 scale violin you could certainly use the Modular Fiddle as a starting point for your design!
@@openfabpdx thank you for the reply and the advice, and using the 4 string modular fiddle as the jumping off point is probably the best place to start. I will let you know if it pans out, so you still live in PDX?I live in Beaverton.
@@outlawphil yeah I’m in Portland!
