  • WARNING: SPOILERS VERSAILLES SEASON 2
“Do not mistake me for my mask. You see light dappling on the water and forget the deep, cold dark beneath.”
― Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind
In this video I tried to look through the eyes of Chevalier and show the desperation of a common man who realises that he's about to lose everything that is dear to him.
I've said it before but I have to say it once again - Evan Williams deserves a big standing ovation for his performance! The last episodes of the 2nd season made me cry.
    Hope, guys, you'll like it!

I love it, love it, love it!! I like the escalation; you show how the jealousy is creeping slowly up his guts until utter panic. In season 1 Chevalier wouldn't have raised an eyebrow if Philippe was having sex with another guy at a party. But in season 2 on that "substitute king"-party you show, that it is bothering him, because of the awoken jealousy.
And you picked one of my alltime favorite music tunes. Zack Hemsey's "The Way" is beyond great. I already used it for another vid, it has a wonderful energy and fits perfectly here. Congrats!

I’m so grateful to you for the feedback, dear, as usual! To be honest when I was watching the series for the first time I couldn’t understand why did Chevalier behave himself like that. I mean I’m absolutely agree with you that in the 1st season he was so 100% self-confident that his behaviour seemed to me like...strange, but then I’ve read Evan’s interview where he was talking about Chevalier’s exile, as he started to ask himself “Does Philippe still need me after all this years?”. And suddenly all became clear to me. All this season he’s wearing a mask and try to hide an increasing panic that tears him apart. The "gun scene" in the 9th episode is 10/10 for me. It's the most emotional and stunning scene of the whole season.

I still don't understand why they made that plot twist. It ruined a section of " versailles" that was actually a beautiful love story

@@sarademarco407 perhaps it was the fact that people in war often......change, my grandfather was born in 1949 and had 7 friends (between the ages of 18-29) he was the youngest (18) when the Vietnam 🇻🇳 war happened, they all said (cause he debated on joining em) they all said "stay back, well need all the welcome we can get when we all come back🤗
Of the 7, 2 came back(alive.....somewhat) only of the 2, only 1 was in one peice(one lost a leg, but both needed to be in a wheelchair ♿️ their whole lives) and he often said "those 2 died the worst way" I asked how? He Said ".......they drank themselves to death"
I feel as though I talked to much, but my point is war changes people (ALWAYS FOR WORST) though I do feel how they perceived that in Versailles was rather difficult (especially with the amount of character the 2 had grown)

Chevalire de Lorraine was pretty far the most interesting character.
His evolution was really amazing ♥ he became in a better and more mature person, i like to see his paths for himself, letting aside his relationship with Philippe.
In S1 he was just Philippe´s lover, but in S3 he´s the man who always wanted to be.
Lover, good person, a fighter in that savage jungle that Versailles is.

    • @sunandstars9599
      @sunandstars9599  7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

Thank you for the comment!:) I think that Chevalier fears to lose Philippe because that would mean loosing himself. Philippe has a brother (no matter how hard they fight) and a loving wife who believes in him, he achieves goals and he has a higher purpose in life while Chevalier is only a sick and drugaddicted man without any friends or family. In a "gun scene" we see that he doesn't need his life because he clearly understands that he's nobody without Philippe. Philippe is the center of his world but this world turnes out to be small and fragile.
This is as I see him in the 2nd season but to be honest his personality changed a lot since the first one (I mean his 100% self-confidence). Btw how do you find the second season?:)

I watched that famous gun-scene yesterday, and it left me with a double feeling. I was both shocked and pleased with Philippe. i had expected him to be shocked to the core and pleeding with the Chevalier not to do it, I thought he's completely break down. but he didn't. He didn't allow the Chevalier to emotionally blackmail him. Again, I thought about what we said about Philippe losing his softness. I was surprised, but not displeased, at the almost cruel way Philippe pushes him on the ground and just leaves the room. But I was so upset when he reacted worried all over when the chevalier gets wounded.

I still don't cry very fast, unfortunately. But this last episode was epic!!! :D
The kiss between Philippe and the Chevalier must be the very best thing in the whole series!!! :D Because they made things up - or Thomes did, in fact ;) - but also because it was a simple, real kiss. My first thought was that it was a Holywood-kiss as it is called, with truckage and all that, so I rewatched and I was like: "No, it is a real kiss, you see their lips actually touch and for a certain amount of time" Much kisses are tricked and many would not expect men to do this, but still it seemed real. I still don't dare to say it WAS real, but Alex and Evan were great in it anyway!! :D
They made me yearn for love again. :(
I felt for De Montespan when Louis tricked her, making her believe he still loved her and believed her innocent, but in stead letting her alone before sex would begin, to state it boldly... And that friend of hers is seducin,g Louis but when he give her the sign she can be his next, she steps back. First I thought she did it out of friendship, or fear for her friend, but why then would she continue at the end? I have an uneasy feeling by her.
I was so intensified, I couldn't help at some point to note The Montespan I had like two different earings?! (I know that's a modern trend, but didn't expect it quite in here, or was in the light?!)
The first thing that nagged me was the fact that the whole series we don't see the son of Louis and suddenly he appears again. Having to watch at the pyre. (How could Louis force a child, his own child at that, to such a terrible thing?!
The second that made me feel angry was - could it be?! - Philippe himself. How is it possible Thomas could beat him like that? I was totally like :O :O :O Luckily the Chevalier was true to his word "to kill Thomas". I liked that on its own - was it out of love or out of revenge against Philippe? - the moment he found Philippe unconscious, everything that had been said or done between them melted away! my heart did, too.
I had never thought Alex looked that pale, however! XD
But again, I haunted myself, wondering whether the Chevalier was truly as haunted by Philippe's condition as he claims after he is called by Louis. Was he only playing with eevryone again or was he in sincere worry for Philippe? What WAS sincere, however, was his fear when Louis only wanted to thank him! XD XD That was epic, too!!! But then, if he had not cared for Philippe, maybe he wouldn't have gone after Thomas in the first place.
There is quite some difference between the moment he kneels down next to Philippe all fear and thrembling - surely believing he wa dead already - and then his solide hand with which he takes the shot...
But my second favorite made up for everything - When Philippe says to Liselotte: "You will find someone to fill the role of a father" and looks at the Chevalier, who very clearly looks away! XD XD
I might be paranoid, but when we see two times how Liselotte takes the hand of the Chavlier, I was like "Don't you two dare to try anything!" while in history, they never did, as far as is known.
But they share a great sentiment, both not wanting for Philippe to go to war again. What wasn't quite right if you ask me, was how they could be so sure it was a son. Of course, with a son, it meant an heir and it meant their duty was done. But still, they should been talking about "our child". :p
My third was the - final - embrace between our brothers! even after all those time - after all they had been through, as Louis states - Philippe still couldn't bear any good sense from his brother. I felt a bit pained at Louis making an ultimatum again. Luckily Philippe didn't walk away from him this time! But why had Louis first to say "you love me" instead of "I love you"? :p
You are right, I felt quite some emotions, that I didn't know where to start, but I am in the first place contented with the episode and the whole series. I do hope I will see more of it. Or at least more Alex&Evan. :D
The second season was easier to bear, because it shows Philippe in a much stronger position.
And I hope the two of us will meet again, one time.

      @sunandstars9599  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh, I'm so happy to read your opinion (finally!)!
Yes, the kiss was so romantic but so tragic at the same time! And I liked the moment when Philippe nudged Chevalier with his nose. *so sweet*. I'm sure that this kiss wasn't tricked as we could already see them kissing in the 1st season (when Philippe returned back from war) and that time it was no doubt real french kiss so....:D:D
Moreover recently I was reading Evan's new interview and, as I understood, he uses Stanislavski's method in his acting (maybe you could've heard about this). In brief it means that an actor must put himself into the mindset of a character so that he could genuinely experience his emotions and feelings. For example while filming a scene in the dungeon in the 1st season he was sitting on the cold floor with bare legs for 2 hours. So, you can imagine that all the kisses are supposed to be real as well. :D
Well...about Louis's son...I can't say I'm fond of this part either. I would love to see more interaction between Louis and his son and Philippe and his children as well. Moreover I don't understand where are all the children of madame de Montespan? Historically she gave birth to 6 (!) or 7 royal children but we saw the only miscarriage and that's all..:( And I wonder did she really love the king?
I didn't notice different earings btw. I need to re-watch the series! :D You mean she has two diffrent earings in both ears or two earings in one ear?
As for my general attitude to madame de Montespan...well...I liked her acting and I felt pity for her in the end but I couldn't stop thinking that her appearence is a way...too modern? She looks like a podium model of the 21st century. I mean all the women at Versailles are beautiful but I don't have such a feeling about young Sophie for example.
Yes, I understand your feelings about Philippe/Thomas fight:D I was also like "Is it all?". Philippe was an experienced warrior who knew that Thomas was a spy and was 100% prepared to his resistance so how could it be so easy to fight him down? Is Thomas a ninja or smth? :D I was innerly shouting while watching that scene "No, please, not his face!" But I just LOVED the scene when Chevalier killed him. The Chevalier's face in this moment is just priceless. He's so self-confident, so dangerous, so pleased with himself, so courageous... To my opinion it's the only moment of the 2nd season when Chevalier was literally acting himself as the chevalier. :D Knight in shining armour. :D It's a pity that he shot him in the back, I would love to see them two fighting as equals...but well, it's better than nothing, right?
As for this phrase "You will find someone to fill the role of a father"...well, as I've told you as an administator to the russian Versailles fangroup I've read tones of discussions on this matter :D That's strange but people in my country mostly think that Philippe's look on the Chevalier in that scene meant "If I die, you will become a father to my child". This is a VERY romantic suppose but as I see it (and I'm 99% sure that I'm right :D) Philippe just wanted to say goodbye to the Chevalier and to hug and kiss him as soon as possible but his duty (the protocole) obliged him to talk to Liselotte first. So he glanced at him as if apologising and Chevalier turned away like "Ok, I don't like it but I understand".
I was crying when she took Chevalier by the hand!!! Omg, I was just sitting in tears and praise her as a woman.
Me myself was in a very similar situation as them three and I couldn't find any of her wisdom in my own soul. When you have feelings for someone it's SO hard to accept their lovers. So she's just a gorgeous woman and one of my favorite characters in the whole season. I hope Chevalier will be nice to her.
I wrote to you that after watching this scene I han only the one question in my mind left. And this question is "Why wouldn't Chevalier come with him?". There was such a CHANCE for him to show his bravery and to accompany Philippe on war...what was the thing that made him remain at court?
Hahaha, I was laughing that you've imagined Chevalier and Liselotte as a couple! :D:D You have to admit that they look alike each other (like brother and sister) and they're wearing the same colors sooo....they would be a beautiful couple! :D But historically it's not possible, yeah :D
I have a great plesure discussing this series with you, thank you for this! It's so rare when you have a chance to talk with a thinking person and openely share all your emotions. So you can feel free to write me on the e-mail deersfears@gmail.com as well if you'd like to discuss something more. And I'm happy to meet you on TH-cam!

I hate the Chevalier. 😑 I don't want him to die because the actor who plays him is so funny and awesome, but I hope he evolves into someone more mature and less ridiculous. I don't understand how someone like Philippe could actually fall in love with a person like him.

I was actually asking myself the same question, and believe me, I love MonChevy and le chevalier is so dear to me ! But yes. I thought he was weird in that season. Acted strange, like he had lost his mind and not in control of anything. But undiscovering his true feelings. So, he behaved so irrationally (but maybe out of instinct) and created a mess of everything and yet Philippe is so in love and still need him... But why ? I wondered. He had nothing to offer to Philippe, not even his support like he used to do in 1st season. Maybe this time he was the one who needed support. But Monsieur failed to understand this. He failed to communicate with him when it was necessary. And fucked up everything as well 😅

I absolutely disagree, and with all due respect Philippe has many flaws himself that surpass that of the Chevaliers'. You cannot look at this relationship from one perspective only, and I'm so very sick of everyone blaming the Chevalier. Put yourself in his shoes, imagine if you are on the verge of committing suicide in front the person you love the most, and that's how they react? Do you know how scarring that can be? Chevalier could have had everything he wanted, yet he threw it all away for Philippe whom clearly did not treat him right, which you can obviously see in season 3. Philippe has flaws too, let's not forget that. I sometimes wonder how The Chevalier can love someone like Philippe, but I acknowledge both are complex, and entail flaws. So let's not just blame one person, yeah?

I _despised_ him in s1 (& his stupid poodle-hair didn't help), but he grew on me in s2, & by s3- I ❤ his development- the compassion he showed for the lady Huguenot was so remarkable- when I wouldn't *ever* have expected it of s1 Chevy, & the evolution of his relationship with Liselotte was really beautiful to watch, too...
