  • I was looking for a way to improve the macro capabilities of my GoPro Hero 9 without dropping huge money on an entirely new camera. Along came the Backscatter +15 MacroMate Mini and the Flip9 filter system.
The Flip9 fits securely onto the waterproof GoPro case and allows you to attach up two filters including the macro lens which can be flipped into place. I've been really impressed with the quality of the footage I am able to capture with my GoPro Hero 9. If you're looking for a way to capture good macro footage with your GoPro Hero 9 then this is a really good option that I've been really happy with. With good lighting you'll be impressed with the quality of the footage you can capture on your dives. You can see the footage for yourself, I am very happy with it.
This footage was taken scuba diving off Vancouver Island at various shore diving locations during the summer and fall of 2021.
Species In Video: Anenomes, Puget Sound King Crabs, Giant Pacific Octopus, Pacific Spiny Lumpsucker, Purple Sea Star, Quillback Rock Fish, and a few more.
    Pros:
    amazing macro footage
secure mounting system to camera housing
easy to use underwater with gloves on
lens stays secure and doesn't flip on/off when you don't want it too
    Cons:
it's not easy getting steady footage without a tripod or a good rest and excellent buoyancy control. It takes some practice!
your GoPro needs to be a very specific distance from your subject for the footage to look really good or it will be blurry. This can take some practice (roughly 3" to 3.5" inches is best with the Hero 9) They do include a small focus stick that can be used to measure this distance but it's not something you'd take with you underwater.
the lens can get internal fog inside of it under certain conditions leading to cloudy looking footage. (this has only happened twice out of many dives).
cost to ship to Canada and the duty/tax was expensive ($70 in duty alone!).

Pretty good footage here. I guess it's a out getting so close you can't seethe corner issues the lens has. I'm thinking of getting the +15, shooting in 5.3K and cropping to 4K

Yes, you need to get close, there is definitely a sweet spot... I feel the +15 will be too much, you'd need to be really close, and without the ability to manually focus, it's going to be tough to get good footage. I have moved on from my GoPro though and am now shooting with a Sony A7Siii in a proper underwater housing.

@scubabc6701 I shoot stills with my d500 and retra stores with a variety of lenses but feel like I want to do a bit more video with the gopro as b roll.
I'm also due to to WA / VI at some point as you must have some of the best cold water diving! @@scubabc6701

@@scubabc6701would you say there are any other options than the macro mate for gopro macro?

@@sinetwo I think the Macro mate is pretty much the best option still.

Hi, congrats for the great video!! Just a few questions... did U record in 4K 60 fps? What about ISO MAX value? Field of View and color Profile? I've just order the same kit and I'm very glad if U can share your gopro settings.

Thank you! Yes, I was recording in 4K 60 FPS. Iso MAX is usually set to 1600. Field of view is Wide and color profile is generally set to GoPro. I find there isn't much flexibility for color correcting the GoPro footage so I just let the camera handle it. Have fun!

Awesome video! What about taking still shots while using the macromate? Also good?

I have never tried it for still shots but with good lighting, it should be good.

Do you use the distance table with it or do you check it just on the screen

I have just got a feel for it now... I actually didn't find their little distance gauge very helpful. When I used it the footage was always blurry. I've just had to experiment with the distance and it seems a little further away than they recommend works best. You just have to experiment and see.

    What lights did you use???

For these clips I was using 2 x Kraken 12,000 lumen mini solar flares. They don't sell them anymore though so now I am using the Kraken 15,000 lumen lights.

What setting on gopro? Wide or narrow?

I was using the wide setting, but probably should have been using narrow.
