In English, the idiom "to go the distance" means to follow something through -- usually something difficult -- all the way to the end. The phrase comes from boxing, where it meant to last for all of the rounds without giving up or getting knocked out. Rocky wanted to prove he could "go the distance" against the champ, and he did exactly that. Being judged as the winner or not really didn't matter to him. That's why, at the end of the film, the judges' decision fades into the background noise. It's irrelevant to Rocky. He already accomplished what he'd set out to do.
And going the distance back then was even more difficult. Boxing went 15 rounds back then, it was changed in the mid/late 80's I think, now it's 12 rounds.

Rocky gets more aggressive and gets to the body, while Apollo tries to re-establish the jab. They trade back and forth and Apollo drops Rocky and breaks his nose at the end of the first with a combination. The knockdowns would cancel each other out and due to his command of the ring in that round, Apollo probably would've won it on at least two of the scorecards, 10-9.

Rocky is one of those unique films that is simultaneously a drama, a sports movie, *and* a romance movie with lots of humour throughout. That's why men _and_ women like the film. It's similar to The Karate Kid, in that it's not really about physical fighting, even though fighting is certainly an important theme in the film.
Thank you so much for being one of the few reactors that I have seen on TH-cam who seems to understand that Mickey cared for Rocky. Too many people bashed him immediately but eventually warmed up to him. He brought discipline and focus to Rocky's life..
This was the first major film to use the *Steadicam* which was a new way of filming a scene handheld, without using a dolly track, but still keeping it from looking shaky, especially filming him going up the steps. You might recall the backgrounds of the forest in Return Of The Jedi? Those were done with a Steadicam.
My fave Rocky movie is the second one: love, suspense (in the ring), drama/tears, personal struggle, kindnes/sweetness...the whole package in full range of emotions!
FYI: the spray (23:52) you saw being sprayed in Rocky's nose was probably something to moisten the inside of the nose so it's not brittle/dry. it helps avoid bleeding.
@@dansdiscourse4957 I wonder about that. Pseudoephedrine, which was the active ingreduient in most nasal decongestants back then, has stimulant properties similar to amphetamine, and because of that, the Olympics treated it as a forbidden performance enhancing drug.
The brilliance of the ending is that Rocky won, even though he lost the fight. He went 15 rounds with the Champ and Adrian was there with him at the end (just think of his life when the movie starts). The director purposely had the ring announcer be the background dialogue to Rocky/Adrian’s dialogue which mattered more than who won the fight.
You will absolutely love Rocky II, my personal favourite. At it's heart Rocky is a love story, and about the battle for self-esteem from both partners in the relationship. People who have been knocked down, again and again. It's about staying on your feet, even after you get knocked down, and the boxing match is simply a metaphor for that idea.
The Dog was Stallone's actual dog. Before he sold the script this film he had to give the dog to a friend because he couldn't afford to buy food for both of them. After he sold the script he bought his dog back. Studios keep offering to buy the script but didn't want him to star in it, so he kept turning him down until one studio finally let him star in his script. Which worked out well because it won best picture.
I love the kiss scene. I know a lot of people find it awkward or even like Rocky is a creep. And while this kinda stuff would be a red flag in the real world, we are shown Rocky's life. We see how he's a little slow and dumb, but he's a decent guy. Someone who wouldn't take advantage of Adrian. We know he's trustworthy. That he has a good heart. That's what I love about the scene. Adrian has been told her whole life she is worthless. That she doesn't even have physical appeal. And here's this bum from the slums who's dying to get a chance to tell her how much he cares. That HE thinks she's incredible. Allowing this girl suffering from the disease of Shyness to forget Paulie and her Mother just for a moment and let down her walls. Let this goofy guy sweep her off her feet into a loving embrace. This Movie series is a love story with Boxing thrown in. And this moment is what sold me on Rocky & Adrian.
Sylvester Stallone was homeless and living in a car with that dog. When he was writing this movie. He had to get rid of Butkus. When he got paid for the movie, he went and got him back and put him in the movie.😊
You forgot also to say, it sounds, the guys literally extorted him several thousands dollars (3-15 stories differs about the amount) to get his dog back AND required to play in the movie (the short guy in front of the gym, if I'm not wrong)
20:04 I always fine this scene funny. Adrian has come out her shell and definitely loves Rocky. She is practically throwing herself at him But he can’t reciprocate because he is in training.
Congrats on getting into the school you wanted! I am sure there are already a lot of other people explaining you the judging of the fight and telling you to definitely keep going with the Rocky + Creed movies, so I will just support that.
The cellos and strings in the track, Rocky's Reward, my discription has always been like the sweetest honey dripping slowly from a wooden honey dripper. That's the vision I see when listening to it with eyes closed.
I remember when they only showed certain movies once a year. If they did that with Rocky, I would like to see the sales of eggs the following week. A lot of young boys tried raw eggs after seeing this movie.
"She's got gaps, I got gaps, together we fill each others gaps" means "she completes him" to steal a line from Jerry McGuire or they each have faults but make each other better being together.
Watching you squirm and giggle during the Adrian and Rocky first kisses scenes was absolutely priceless. ha ha. Yes this was every bit of a romance story as it was an underdog story. Loved your reaction to this. Your reaction to the Rocky sequels should be equally fun to watch. Fun times.
When you see Rocky II you'll get the continuity of this ending. And I can't WAIT to see your reaction to THAT one!!! Lol. Easily one of the best sequels in cinematic history.
Sadly, that's the misconception of early Rocky movies. Boxing was secondary. Adrian and their love story was always the engine driving Rocky's success. Amazing how many miss that. Pay attention in all these movies how only her input and support allows Rocky to be the best he can be. Rocky is really a character piece, Stallone was amazing both writing and starring in these movies
It's the same with the first Rambo movie too, really. Everyone hears "Rambo" and assumes giant, violent action, but First Blood -- while it obviously has some action and violence -- is another character study about a guy dealing with PTSD (before anyone REALLY knew a lot about what that actually was) and examining the way vets were treated upon returning from Vietnam. Just like the Rocky franchise, obviously the Rambo franchise started leaning away from the character stuff and more into action, the way Rocky starts to become mostly about boxing.
I've never hears anyone say it's for swelling... It's a lot more simple than that. You have a mouthguard in when you fight and it's quite exhausting. You have to be able to take deep, full breaths consistently and so you go crazy with the nasal spray to clear the sinuses and make sure they stay clear for the fight.
Always a great channel. How beautiful is this story? Us old guys loved it when it came out but the more years that go by, the more I realize how amazing this is as a love story, a zero-to-hero story, an inspiration to everyone.... I think I love this story more today than when I seen it as a kid in the 70s.
"I don't know what it is, but I just love montages of people getting their shit together." -- This is probably the best reaction comment I've ever heard. :-D
Love your reactions! FYI, in boxing, you have to beat the champion to win the title. A tie goes to the champion... He was not defeated. A draw, and he retains the title
This is a love story ❤ Not only with Adrian (Adrianna) but with everyone around him, including the two Creed movies. You need to see them all. You will enjoy them❤

Quite a few people have an issue with the way Rocky interacts with Adrian in the apartment, but they miss the signals throughout the first half of the movie. Rocky frequently catches Adrian looking at him during the visits to the pet shop, and if she weren't interested, she'd have absolutely continued to ignore him. Rocky knew she was interested in him but he also gathered enough information that she's suffocatingly shy. A big part of that is Paulie, who keeps her caged like a bird. At no point once Adrian enters that apartment does the word "No" leave her lips. She wants to be there, she likes him, but she's a deer in the headlights without any idea what to do and she wants to retreat back to the prison her brother built for her. Rocky was just as uncomfortable as Adrian, but he knew the attraction was there and took a chance to try to let her feelings come out. If she had actually told him no, he'd have been the first one to open the door to let her out.
I agree with almost all of this. But, even if she didn't definitively say "no," Adrian did tell Rocky she "didn't belong here" and "I don't know you well enough to be in a man's apartment' before informing Rocky "I should go." It might have been worth a 2nd date for her to feel less rushed. Just sayin'.
Everybody here in Philadelphia knows this movie. There's a statue of Rocky outside our art museum (the steps he runs up) and there's always a long line of people to take pictures with it.
When *Rocky* says no fooling around it's not because of *Adrian's* brother there's an old wise tale that during training a guy should not have Sex it weakens them. That's why in the following scene *Mick* yells at the women to go saying women weaken legs
Thanks for the fun and sensitive reaction, Kamilla, but much more importantly, congratulations on your acceptance into university (or whatever the other type of college you mentioned). It's very apparent you have the intelligence to excel, and your enthusiasm's right there, too! Good luck!🧐
The story between Rocky and Adrian is one of the few romances that men can admit to watching and not get made fun of for liking. Others include The Princess Bride, The Empire Strikes Back, and almost any other sports film.
Every man I know who has watched the Notebook, has admitted to liking it. Every man gives him a a little crap for it, then admits he liked it too. And mostly they did watch it cos a woman made him watch it. But they wind up liking it.
Championship fights used to be *15* rounds today they are limited to *12.* Non title fights can be *4, 8 or 10* rounds. If somebody is not knocked out it goes to *3* judges who are scoring each round. In this case *2* out of the *3* judges gave the fight to *Apollo* so he won by split decision
Well, now you've done it... You've started down the Rocky rabbithole. Now you have to watch all of them. Most of them are actually really good movies and continue the story of Rocky and Adrian. Can;t wait to see you watch the next one.
Don't know if anyone said, but if not....what Rocky and Apollo inhaled up their noses was kinda like Vicks vapor rub. It has some menthol and opens the air ways. They also smear vasoline on their faces, especially cheek bones and eye sockets where the bones are close to the skin. The vasoline helps the blows glance off instead of impacting squarely. This reduces the likelihood of being "cut" from a blow forcing the tissue inward around the sharp bones which, in effect, causes the bone to cut the tissue from the inside out. Imagine hitting a wall with a bare fist. The wall cannot literally cut you, but the impact of hard bone of the knuckles against the hard material of the wall mashes the tissue so forcibly that it partially ruptures. Also, when Rocky told Mick that he couldn't see and asked him to "cut" him, this was literal. In a fight, the tissue around the eye (eyebrow, cheek, temple) sustain trauma and begin to swell from a buildup of blood and water, causing the eye to be shut off by the swollen tissue. The fastest and most effective way to counter the effect and restore vision is to make a small incision, typically at the hairline on the underside of the affected eyebrow. This drains some of the built up fluid, the swelling temporarily goes down and vision is restored. Fights are determined by 3 possible outcomes. 1: a technical knockout in which a fighter is disoriented to the extent that he cannot stand to his feet within a 10 second count. 2: a physical knockout in which the fighter is knocked unconscious or 3: by a collective score from a panel of 3 judges. Rocky had already been knocked down for a count at least once versus Apollo being knocked down only once without any count and got back on his feet almost immediately. I say this is the reason that Apollo won the fight on score.
For me rocky is the original montage of someone getting into shape. I saw this movie when it first came out at the drive in . Every kid wanted to be a boxer after the movie came out
Hi Sweetheart, I haven’t seen you in so long ! I hope you continue to watch the rest of the Rocky movies ! They just get better and I’m sure you will enjoy them !
Each round is scored by 3 judges. They give points on technical boxing skill, knock downs, power and the number of punches landed. The fight can be won by knocking out your opponent, the referee can stop the fight if one fighter can no longer defend himself, the fighter's manager can "throw in the towel" to surrender the fight or you can win by points. A split decision means one of the judges had Rocky winning.
Great reaction, Centane. Although this one was before my time, I LOVE it. And the thing to remember about this movie is that it was made on a very low budget and shot in only 28 days of filming. Sylvester Stallone was an unknown, but he wrote the script, and somehow not just convinced a studio to finance it, but he also convinced them to let him play a role in the movie (not just any role...the TITLE role). Anyway, the end result garnered multiple Oscar nominations and ended up winning the Oscar for Best Picture. Btw, this was also the movie that created the 'Workout montage' with the music in movies. Before this movie, filmmakers didn't see it necessary to show the athletes working out in different inter-cutting scenes, since they thought it would bore the audience...lol. But Stallone changed all of that making sure that there was an inspirational workout montage in the movie, the very first of its kind. Now pretty much every movie in this genre uses a similar workout with montage.
28:55 because he won more rounds. There are 3 judges outside of the ring and they score each round a give points. Winner of the round gets 10 points and loser gets 9. They add that at the end and who gets more points wins the fight. It was split decision because one judge had Rocky winning and 2 other had Apollo as a winner.
You continue with the rest of the series. The relationship between Rocky and Adrian goes through many challenges. The characters develop more and you become more invested in them.
This is a love story about a man who happens to be a boxer. Rocky lost the match, but he met his goal of going the distance with the world champion. To see more on Rocky and Adrian's relationship growth, you must watch Rocky 2. The entire series of Rocky 1 - 6 is highly recommended. FYI: The nose spray keeps those sinuses open for the most efficient breathing possible.
The first 2 movies are amazing. The next 2 are pretty good. U don't need to watch the rest. And so far, the first 2 Creed movies have been outstanding! The first 4 rocky movies are the montage kings, of working out!
The transformation of Adrian is some of the best writing ever IMO. She goes from a shy, quiet and timid girl thats constantly berated and pushed down by everyone around her, especially her brother, to this outgoing, confident and assertive woman. Rocky doesnt really have a way with word "I got gaps, she got gaps, together we fill gaps" is just his way of saying they complete and compliment eachother. They needed eachother to draw out the best version of themselfs thats hidden underneath. "Rocky is not a boxing movie. It's a love story" Sylvester Stallones own words.
the Rocky movies were a big part of my childhood... I still get chills watching any of the movies, especially my favorite - Rocky II... as a musician, the movie soundtrack is perfect, in my opinion.

@@nefariousmex2352 agreed! have to finish the story till the end :D
@Just Me Absurd. Watch them all, including the Creed movies.
Rocky Balboa is the greatest movie character of all time. The character of rocky is almost fifty years old and we get to follow most of his life.
Welcome to the Rocky Universe, the greatest Heart you'll ever see on Screen, backed by the greatest Love Story ❤
My fave Rocky movie is the second one: love, suspense (in the ring), drama/tears, personal struggle, kindnes/sweetness...the whole package in full range of emotions!
All the Rocky movies have love and friendship as their main themes, with some boxing going on in the background
FYI: the spray (23:52) you saw being sprayed in Rocky's nose was probably something to moisten the inside of the nose so it's not brittle/dry. it helps avoid bleeding.
That's possible but I think it's a decongestant meant to clear the airways so the boxers get maximum oxygen for the fight
@@dansdiscourse4957 I wonder about that. Pseudoephedrine, which was the active ingreduient in most nasal decongestants back then, has stimulant properties similar to amphetamine, and because of that, the Olympics treated it as a forbidden performance enhancing drug.
You better watch the 2nd one, I loved this reaction!!!
The brilliance of the ending is that Rocky won, even though he lost the fight. He went 15 rounds with the Champ and Adrian was there with him at the end (just think of his life when the movie starts).
The director purposely had the ring announcer be the background dialogue to Rocky/Adrian’s dialogue which mattered more than who won the fight.
rocky is the greatest love story ever. the entire rocky series and creed films are great.
4:17 "Wait, is this gonna be a romance?!" 🤣 You got soooo excited, as if you were a child and it was Christmas morning. 🎁🎄🎁 😝
When he got paid for the movie, he went and got him back and put him in the movie.😊
awww this made my day
You forgot also to say, it sounds, the guys literally extorted him several thousands dollars (3-15 stories differs about the amount) to get his dog back AND required to play in the movie (the short guy in front of the gym, if I'm not wrong)
@@Centane Turtles Cuff and Link should still be alive , in 2018 they were about 44 year old and are in Rocky movie series spinoff sequel Greed 2 .
That story isn't true, it's an urban myth
@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 does the Emperor have his parents permission to use the Internet? Look it up.
Rocky is so likeable, you can't help but see what happens next.
"She's got gaps, I got gaps, together we fill each others gaps" means "she completes him" to steal a line from Jerry McGuire or they each have faults but make each other better being together.
OMG! The look on your face when he started to drink the eggs was priceless!
Stallone puked up the eggs shortly after cutting the scene, lol.
19:01 - Basically, he means they each have shortcomings. Together they understand each other and have strengths where the other has weaknesses.
That was just nasal spray to combat the eventual swelling from getting repeatedly hit in the face
Both Rocky & Rambo look like they’re about one thing…but they’re both about something else. Great films.
This is a love story ❤ Not only with Adrian (Adrianna) but with everyone around him, including the two Creed movies. You need to see them all. You will enjoy them❤
You’re one of the few Millennial reactors that doesn’t make my eye roll with hypersensitivity. Well, at least in this one. I have to check out the others. 😉
Look at you!! Haven't even started school yet and already you figured out your allowed to kick in kickboxing 😂😂😂😂😂
you might notice that i'm secretly a boxing mastermind :)) hehe
When *Rocky* says no fooling around it's not because of *Adrian's* brother there's an old wise tale that during training a guy should not have Sex it weakens them. That's why in the following scene *Mick* yells at the women to go saying women weaken legs
You are gonna love all the Rocky movies! Glad you started this series.
I'm from Philadelphia, born & raised! True philly chic, and I subbed, because I can't wait for Rocky 2!
"The Empire Strikes Back", the movie depicting the romance between a man and his sister.
I subscribed... I expect the whole Rocky franchise you'll love it ❤
I like that this movie is more about Rocky's character than the boxing its cool and congrats on your studies!
You’ll enjoy the story!! they get more interesting and upbeat as they go on 👍🏻
Don't know if anyone said, but if not....what Rocky and Apollo inhaled up their noses was kinda like Vicks vapor rub. I say this is the reason that Apollo won the fight on score.
rocky did what he aimed for to go the full distance with the champion... a feat that nobody before could achieve...
Happy for you.. You now get to watch the rest, and it just get's better and better - a journey worth taking
For me rocky is the original montage of someone getting into shape. I saw this movie when it first came out at the drive in . Every kid wanted to be a boxer after the movie came out
Wonderful reaction. Your facial expressions were Oscar-worthy. You will love Rocky 2
This movie changed my life. With hard work you can be someone
The man that plays Rocky’s trainer is Burgess Meredith. He was the Penguin from the Adam West Batman series
Great reaction. This is one of the best movies of all time. Rocky is not just boxing movie its a love.
23:57 Menthol I think, to clear your nose. I use it in the winter sometimes.
Hi Sweetheart, I haven’t seen you in so long ! I hope you continue to watch the rest of the Rocky movies ! They just get better and I’m sure you will enjoy them !
Centane, your giggle at 15:16 when they kiss should be a meme, so cute, best wishes in your studies, Congrats.
Congratulations on getting into school. I’m glad you watched Rocky, they’re my favourite movies. I hope you watch them all.
2:51 $40.55 in 1976 is equivalent to about $215 today (200 euro). _I_ sure wouldn't volunteer to get beat up for so little!
I love Adrian so much. One of the best written characters ever. Also Talia Shire is always amazing.
the $40.55 that Rocky got paid in the beginning would be $227.00 in today's American dollars...
Looking forward to you watching the next 3!! Great reaction from you as always 😊
Keep going, watch them all. You will love this franchise.
You continue with the rest of the series. The relationship between Rocky and Adrian goes through many challenges.
The characters develop more and you become more invested in them.
Rocky movies are love stories always have been,
romance movie disguised as sports movie
Thanks!
Congratulations! College and university are basically the same thing in the US. The main difference is that a university has multiple colleges within it. For example I went to University of the Arts and in that school were the college of media (mine) , college of dance, college of theater, college of fine arts, etc.
