I recently started swim for a local swim team and practice is cancelled till the spring because of the virus. I don’t have a pool and I always want to practice I keep forgetting everything 😂 I keep watching these videos again and again thank you!
I used to swim 2.5 to 3 km butterfly a day in the sea, non stop. I spent almost 4 years not swimming and in my first week at the pools, I can manage 4 sets of 250 meters after a 1000 meter freestyle warm up. I hope to get back my endurance and power in a few months. I love butterfly, It feels amazing when you get into the flow. You feel like a fish 🙂
Are you back to 2-3km? I am practicing still, and improving technique/endurance. I do 100-150m reps :(, I think my arms are tired first. But freestyle I can swim forever and fast. It really is tough to make it to 1-2Km non stop in butterfly.
If I try to do the butterfly style, the lifeguard will think that I'm drowning and jump into the water to rescue me! You can only fully appreciate it when you actually watch someone do it in real life - it is absolutely gorgeous!
Don't get me wrong but those vids are likely for begineers or early intermediate swimmers. Professionals such as Mr. Phelps have tailored technique which reflects their body shape, strength, stamina and other factors. The reason she said about swimming slow and easy is because this drill - when done improperly - is unbelievably exhausting.
Thank You for you clear and detailed explanation, Aimee Willmott! I especially liked the demonstration of the movement of the arms in the video starting 1:24 and also 1:53. These past few months, I have become comfortable with the breaststroke and these past few weeks (since around the last week of June) with the freestyle. I now hope to get started on the butterfly in the coming weeks.
Thanks for taking the time to explain your tips Amy ,you should do some drills you're self to see your technique however you're awesome just taking God bless you.
Thanx SS, you're making me aware of two redundant mistakes I used to do, my ondulation was forceful and deep, and the arms position during the pull phase was wrong, I need to rethink it now. Full mark SS
Tomorrow I have to do the 400 IM and my problem is the the 100 fly in the beginning! My rhythm is off so it makes it much harder, how can I improve it?
can I allowed to practice This for swimming competition today and my in my butterfly arms and my legs what I do with them when I do it today for the competition
Super premium tips 🤩👌🏽✨ The best, actually, I've came across, to date. A massive thanks 🙏🏽 Also, I reckon that (for women, specially) a nice suitable swimsuit will help you perform far better than otherwise, mainly for beginners.
I found many times that I'm giving hard efforts but not realising the mistake now I understood what I was missing and on what I have to work. Thank You
You are probably kicking from your knees. Try to initiate the kick from your chest (from the abdominal muscles bellow your rib cage) and start it before your hands enter the water for the pull (head goes first in the water). This will set up you timing and rhythm for whole stroke . You will notice that legs will come out water without any effort. In order to get there, practice just dolphin kick with hands under the water to get that undulation from the chest and one arm butterfly drill to practice timing. And be very patient to see the progress. 😀
The best explanation ever! Funny that it comes from a beautiful lady pardon my sexism. There are so many useless videos online and this is the only one explaining all. Thanks
I really needed this my butterfly sucks but all my other strokes are fine and my coach signed me up for my first 400 IM ever, long course and I've literally been crying in fear of the butterfly, still scared lol
when you get your head out of the water to breath, is the force that helps getting the head out of the water generated more from the pushing of the arms back or more from the dolphin kick?
I’d say the force is generated more from the pull then the kick. For example, if you swim butterfly with no kick using a pull buoy, it is very possible (but a little more difficult) to breathe by just pulling; however, if you do dolphin kick on your stomach, hands by your side, and try and lift your chin to breathe, it is basically impossible.
To improve your butterfly stroke in swimming, focus on exercises that build strength, flexibility, and technique: Dolphin Kicks: Practice underwater dolphin kicks to strengthen your core and legs, which are key for the butterfly's undulating motion. Body Undulations: Swim without using your arms, focusing solely on the wave-like body motion to improve rhythm and flow. Pull Drills: Use a pull buoy and focus on your arm movements to develop shoulder strength and improve technique. Butterfly with Fins: Swimming with fins helps enhance the feel of the butterfly kick and strengthens your legs. Core Strengthening: Exercises like planks and leg raises build the core stability needed for efficient butterfly movement. These exercises will improve your power, endurance, and fluidity in the butterfly stroke. Hope that helps!
I take swimming lessons at the ymca and I have been swimming for 7 years I’m in the highest levelbest at all other strokes and diving but worst at butterfly this helps but I can do butterfly
Loads of great tips and very well explained by Amy wilmot, will be knocking a few hundredths off my medley 1km mix, next few days 🙂right Elbow's, Chin, and Good double kick,... Brill 🤘
Everything she said, and you'll see a big improvement already 😜 Other than that, work on everything that increases stamina and coordination, they're both key factors in butterfly. And stay focused on your movements while you swim: even the smallest one makes a huge difference in water. A good technique is capital for a swimmer.
Well, no matter how much experience, you will have it happen. Don't panic. Usually, it's a small amount of water. If it's too much water, you'll need to stop and cough it out. Work with your local coach to learn how to clear the lungs when this happens. I've learned how to control the cough so I can cough out the water while still doing the stroke. I take a small breath and really cough hard when my head re-enters the water. I breathe every stroke in Butterfly. When she talks about chin forward, that's a Phelps technique. It lowers the risk of water intake, but if you swim often enough, it will happen occasionally. Don't let it defeat you. Once you master Butterfly, you won't want to do anything else! :-)
Good job. However, main question is where in real life we would need the butterfly style? It doesn't have any advantage, it's not the fastest, it drains your energy very quick and requires a lot of technique
I’m a competitive swimmer and I’m telling you! I’m so BAD at butterfly 😭💀 I’m starting to think something is wrong with me. Like how am I a competitive swimmer but can’t do butterfly 😭🤣🤣🤣☹️☹️☹️

have you seen Phelps' body shape compared to the average pro swimmer? 🤣🤣🤣

My problem is when I do the strong kick, my feet are too far out of the water. What do I need to do to keep them low and under water?
You are probably kicking from your knees. What is the difference between the two kicks per stroke in butterfly?
Incredibly helpful and informative video

What exercises will help improve butterfly
To improve your butterfly stroke in swimming, focus on exercises that build strength, flexibility, and technique:
Dolphin Kicks: Practice underwater dolphin kicks to strengthen your core and legs, which are key for the butterfly's undulating motion.
Body Undulations: Swim without using your arms, focusing solely on the wave-like body motion to improve rhythm and flow.
Pull Drills: Use a pull buoy and focus on your arm movements to develop shoulder strength and improve technique.

Core Strengthening: Exercises like planks and leg raises build the core stability needed for efficient butterfly movement.
These exercises will improve your power, endurance, and fluidity in the butterfly stroke. Hope that helps!
