Terrific romp, good cast - but watch Torin Thatcher steal scenes as the fearsome master of arms😉
To me, the greatest interest is to watch Thatcher / Sir James in the scene where he first meets Myles. In his "office". He takes Myles for a country bumpkin. BUT Myles does NOT back down or cower under these insults. As Myles and Francis turn to leave, James LOOKS UP. As if he sees some spark of superior character. This is a literary and film-making trick, called "fore-shadowing". (Note: This glance can only be seen in the NON Cinemascope. -- narrow screen. -- version of the film.) Next, we see James mistakenly Under Estimating the cleverness and fighting skill of Myles. Which earns the Respect of the Master. Then, later, Sir James is with Earl of MacWorth, in the room with his chess set. They are reviewing and discussing progress of the students. James accidentally says: It's a shame Myles is Not of Noble Birth. NOW, MacWorth Looks Up. Because he knows the hidden Secret. Myles IS of Noble Birth. This slip of the tongue gives MacWorth the idea to Trick King Henry into granting knighthood. So Myles can challenge the Evil Alban to trial by combat.
Did you catch the subtle jest where James teaches Myles to guide his horse without clutching the reins? Myles says: "How will the horse know which way to go? Unless it has more brains than I do." To which James replies, in a light hearted insult about having more brains: "A possibility not so remote as you imagine."
I presume you are familiar with several other roles Torin Thatcher brilliantly played: Star Trek, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Time Tunnel, Night Gallery, Daniel Boone, Houdini (again paired with Tony Curtis), Witness For The Proscution, etc etc, and of course, etc.
Yes - he strides across the screen like a Medeavil Darth Vader - total Badass❤😂
