  • The new site of the Gujarat Technological University campus slopes gently towards the west side of the Sabarmati River and is reached by roads from the northern and southern sides. The design builds around the unique offerings of the site with a vision of creating a state-of-the-art campus that is at par with international counterparts to achieve sustainability. The intermittent constructed and open spaces where interactions cultivate, discoveries are created and a sense of place and identity is whetted. The building blocks are placed along this spine in a categorical cavalcade with the main spine for motion and open greens ordered along the centrally occurring creek in a helical crisscross.
The residential blocks at the northern end are ordered, followed by the various academic buildings, and the in-house agricultural fields and fruit orchards of the self-sufficient campus bringing up the rear. With corridors book-ended by glazed boxes, the architectural vocabulary created from brick-coloured panels of local stone and shading fins outlined by the exposed concrete structural frame-work gives this learning place a sense of eminent identity.
The harsh sun is kept at bay with deep corridors/passages shaded by concrete pergolas, stone fins lining the building façades, thus providing cool spaces for interactions outside. Solar panels installed on all rooftops decrease the reliance on external energy supply; effective water storage is assured by rainwater harvesting systems and intermittently built recharge wells that allow rainwater to percolate and replenish the groundwater level. The self-sufficiency thus created is bolstered by the on-campus production of food-grains, fruits and vegetables.
