      It isn't bad! I have it now for over a year, the only thing I had to do - was to repaste the CPU and GPU.

    Great review, it's helped me a lot in my decision to get one. Also, your voice is kinda like ASMR to me, so that was a bonus.

    14:10 - That might be an issue with the 120 hz display that you have. The system can't hand off control of that display to the SoC integrated graphics card and so your only option is the discrete card.

      I'm sorry... Which issue? Did you see something I did not or do you mean what I said about the amplifier and the internal GPU, that both are active when the amp is connected?!

    What do you think about your 120Hz panel? I don’t have anyone using it nearby to compare with my 4K, 60Hz no G-Sync panel. Thinking about asking Dell to change it to your TN-WVA screen. But would like to hear the color difference or anything else

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a tough question. I also had an Alienware 15R2 with the 60hz, 4K display, now I'm used to my 15R3 with 120hz screen. If you would ask me now from my memory, I would say there isn't a big difference, but there is definetely! I think you have to answer this question to yourself and to do this the best - I would watch this video: th-cam.com/video/cCpI2UqJ_VU/w-d-xo.html

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shark00n1337
      Thank you! It is the Vindicator version 01. Now there is also an updated form (02) available. As I ordered this one, there was only the 17" version available. It was for the 17R3. 15R3 fits also as well as the 15R2. But for the 17R4 you need the latest version of it.

      GeneralHail cheers man! Yeah I confirmed with Dell too. New Vindicator 15 v2.0 fits the new Alienware 15 and many 17"laptops, the Vindicator 17 v2.0 fits the new 17 R4 and probably a small portion of europe, it's huge!

    hello, awesome video man. I'm thinking of buying this computer but I just want to know average battery life without gaming and what's the refresh rate of the screen ?

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello,
      Thank you. First of all, the battery lasts not very long - on my normal daily usage without attached charger (using energy saving mode with reduced brightness) it comes or lasts around 1h45min to around 1h30min. Sometimes longer and sometimes even shorter. What you should be aware of, is, that this computer really needs the charger or power supply. It won't last long without it. If you are looking for a computer with better conditions or with a longer battery runtime, you should look somewhere else.
      (The average battery life, from what I read and heard, before it’s no longer an effective battery should be around 300-500 full charges.)
      Refresh rate of the screen is 120hz @ 1920x1080.

    HEY can u please explain the difference between TN panel and IPS panel? which looks better?

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      DanZter
      Hey,
      The IPS is better in colour and in quality, but i saw a lot of displays with backlight bleeding and other issues on the IPS.
      I do have a TN Panel now and I would say it is highly enough for a 15" laptop. Quality is good and the viewing angles are okay. Only if you look from the side and not straight into the display. (But who does that, when sitting in front of it?!)
      I would not buy the IPS and spare the money for an external 4K monitor and take the TN panel with g sync instead.

    Herzlichen Gluckwunsch fur deinen neuen Laptop!
    Konnte ich dir darauf hin ein par Fragen stellen?
    Ich mochte den i5 7300HQ un gtx 1060 version kaufen, immer 15zoll. Konntest du mir die masse sagen denn ich finde sie nirgendswo? Fur dich, mit der 1060 ist besser 60fps ips monitor oder der 120fps tn fur 240€ mehr? Ich habe auch gelesen dass er sich uberhitz oder ganz laut wert. Ist es wahr?
    Ich danke dir sehr, und es tut mir leid fur nicht so gutes Deutsch, aber ich hab eine englishe tastatur und komme aus italien. :)
    Gut gemachtes video!

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hallo,
      Ich hoffe du meinst mit die "Masse" - die Maße des Laptops, also die Größe + Gewicht. Die belaufen sich auf folgende Daten: Höhe: 25,4 mm (1 Zoll) x Breite: 389 mm (15,3 Zoll) x Tiefe: 305 mm (12 Zoll)
      Durchschnittliches Gewicht: 3,49 kg (7,69 lbs).
      Ich hatte vorher einen IPS-Monitor mit 4K-Display und muss sagen dass die Farben dort besser zur Geltung kommen, jedoch auf einem 15 Zoll Display ist der Unterschied zwischen dem 4K IPS und dem TN-Display nicht sehr groß. Du kannst dir ja immer noch einen externen Monitor in 4K dazukaufen wenn du möchtest.
      Ja das Gerät wird schon mal etwas lauter, aber ich finde es ist im Bereich des Erträglichen - falls es dich wirklich stört, kannst du ja mit Kopfhörern spielen. Ich finde es fällt nicht wirklich auf und das mit dem Überhitzen auch nicht. Er wird schon "warm", vielleicht auch ein wenig heiß aber nicht so dass man das Gerät nicht mehr berühren kann. Die alten Modelle von Alienware sind da noch viel heißer geworden, ich finde das hat sich schon stark verbessert, was die Kühlung betrifft :)
      Kein Problem. Mein Englisch ist auch nicht perfekt ;)

    • @Fender7495
      @Fender7495 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Danke schon! Ja, ich meine dass, ich wusste dass man das schaffe ''s'' mit zwei ''s'' ersetzen kann... Ista dass nicht so?
      Ubrigens vielen Dank fur die antwort. Die letzte Frage ist: kann man den proccessor un die gpu austauschen? Wurdest du den i5 7300HQ oder den i7 7700HQ nehmen?
      Immer noch vielen dank!

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wenn ich die Wahl hätte, würde ich definitiv den i7 mit 7700HQ nehmen.
      Nein, soweit ich weiß nicht, da der Prozessor und die Grafikkarte bzw. der Grafikchip mit dem Motherboard verschweißt/festgelötet sind. Upgrade-Möglichkeit bietet sich für die Grafikkarte nur durch den AGA - Alienware Graphics Amplifier/Grafikverstärker in den du eine Desktop-Grafikkarte geben kannst.

    I wanted to ask that I am getting one and I really like the r2 design but r3 looks awesome too so what's the major difference only in performance not looks cause I like r2 better and prices are same ? What's your opinion

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Teddy Westside
      I would definetely go for the R3, not only because it has the new 10th Nvidia series inside (1060, 1070, 1080) - it also got thinner, it gets not so hot. The ports have been better sorted on the back of the laptop and the LED from the R2 moved from the back of the screen to the side of the screen on the R3. Also you can buy the R3 with a new series of processor, (7700) which you cannot with the R2.
      Depending on what you want to do with the notebook, playing, video editing or anything else, you have to decide which one you like better, but if you want to use it for one of these things, go for the newer R3.

    I'm considering getting the R3. But I'm having trouble in deciding whether I should go for the 60Hz IPS or the 120Hz Tn. So I'd like to ask, is the Tn panel overall a high quality Tn panel? And how are the viewing angles for a Tn panel? I plan on using it for a lot of media consumption as well as gaming, so I'd prefer a screen with good color quality. Would appreciate any insight.

    Is it too heavy to carry around if I also put some books in the bag? I want to get this laptop for college but don't know if I will be able to carry it around or not

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are going to buy the 15" version with charger, mouse and books in one bag you will be definetely around 4.5kg up to maybe even 5kg or more. (9,92lbs to 11,02lbs) which I would not recommend... this will be quite heavy, even if you want to carry it around for a longer period of time. You could go for the 13" version with 2.6kg or search for alternatives.
      Or you just say: "I don't care, I also can carry 5kg around" ;)

    • @warhead967
      @warhead967 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      GeneralHail Hahaha, I doubt if I will carry charging adapter or not, but still 4-5kg will surely make my should muscles😂. I was looking into Aero 15, but it has gtx 1060(and comes around same price of AW15) with no hdd slot(only m.2) and keyboard has some issues(as I have heard), and alienware 13 too has less storage options.

    Does it run hot? I use apple and need a PC for work and I read that the heat sinks have a poor compound which results in high operating temperatures. People are actually taking this apart, scraping off the compound that is there and putting more efficient compounds on the heat sink.

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bertram Inc.
      You know temperatures and heat are always a huge subject when talking about laptops, especially when it is about gaming notebooks... I think people are wasting too much time talking about the negative aspects and forgetting the good things.
      Of course the laptop gets hot, it is a extreme gaming machine with a lot of memory, highly processors inside and a graphic card from the 10th series. But the maximum temperatures the laptop reaches are way below, what the older series reached. This 15R3 gets from 57-62C. I'd say it is not so bad for a little notebook which you could compare from the power it has with a desktop pc. You can live stream / live record games and play them at the same time.
      You can render videos and also play games or do other things at the same time... etc. etc. I personally think they make great laptops and also with the new 7700 inside, they will reach a new level of power.

    • @Esgrth
      @Esgrth 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bertram Inc. Apparently there was an issue with the first batch where the heatsink did not have proper contact with the cpu and gpu and that they were using some kind of thermal pad. As far as I know, this issue has been resolved and they are now using thermal paste. But I also read that even after the change, repasting will still yield better temps but the new temps without repasting still yield acceptable temps.

    Hallo, bist du zufrieden mit dem Notebook? Könnte man mit der 1070 auch in 4k spielen? Wenn man natürlich das passende Display hat. Ich habe in einem Desktop PC eine 980ti, wird die Leistung da eher gleich sein oder merke ich eine Verbesserung? Und wie mobil ist man mit dem Notebook, ist es noch OK im Rucksack? Danke

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jens Dingeldein
      Hallo Jens,
      Ja mit einem passendem Display könnte man mit der Geforce 1070 auch in 4K spielen.
      Zu einem Desktop PC kann Ich es nicht sagen, aber im Vergleich zu einem Laptop mit einer 980 (mein alter 15R2 hatte eine 980) - auf jeden Fall, die Grafikkarte ist viel schneller und unterstützt auch VR. Spiele wie BF1, Doom usw. laufen alle über 70FPS, Ultra Grafik-Einstellungen. Die 10er Serie an sich von Geforce ist ein Traum... :)
      Okay vom Platzverhältniss ist es schon im Rucksack, aber sehr schwer natürlich. Der Laptop an sich hat schon über 3kg, mit dem Ladegerät in Blockgröße kommt man da schon auf fast 4kg. Auf Kurzstrecken okay, aber auf längeren Wegen nicht das Wahre.

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    How's the TN panel? is it better than R2 IPS display other than the 120hz refresh rate?

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Akmal Damit
      Personally, I would say the IPS is better in quality / details. But, I had some backlight bleeding on one point in the upper corner on the IPS.
      This display doesn't have any bleeding, but some other issue, the display frame isn't glued perfectly on the display on the place over the alienware logo... Im working on solving this problem.
      But, back to the display quality: on a 15" notebook, which is not really big, I think the difference between a 4K and 1080p TN display isn't really worth bothering or relevant.

    Hi everyone, I just bought a Alienware R2 with the skylake i7-6700HQ, 16gb DDR4 ram, GTX980M @ 8gb DDR5 with a 4k UHD display and wanted to know if I should of bought the R3 instead with an i7-7700HQ, 16gb DDR4 ram, GTX1060 @ 6gb DDR5 with a FHD display. The UHD display is really what I wanted with the pixels being higher and the UHD 350 nits vs UHD 300 nits. I paid $1631 for it. Does the R3 offer better cooling or other options vs R2. Thanks!, let me know what you think.

    • @zacharygoterch168
      @zacharygoterch168 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Carolyn Campbell It's more of a toss-up between the two. You get more performance with the newer laptops but if you need ports, it's best to just stick with the R2 and buy the Amplifier with a graphics card close to the resolution that you'll be playing at mostly. For 1080p @ high/near max settings buy the 1060, or for 1080p max/1440p high settings, buy a 1070. From what I've heard a 1080 will actually bottleneck the mobile i7 chips unless you get the 6820HK/7820HK (not completely sure on the 7700HQ) because of the low stock frequencies (2.8 GHz w/boost to 3.5 on the first core and 3.3 on the rest on the 6700HQ). A 1070 should be the most you get for the Amplifier.

    can the r2 keep up with the r3 in performance? in other words, can the r2 run the same game with the same settings and have near the same performance? thanks

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I personally saw it, I think in some games, like for example in Battlefield 1, the R3 performs way better than the R2 did. When playing BF1 with the R2 I had some serious issues and lag after playing for a longer period of time... Short said: After 1 or 2 hours playing the FPS ingame dropped from 70-80, to sometimes to 30-40 or even less. But I think this was an issue with the 6820HK processor and the GTX980m. Now with the 1070 and the 6700 it performs way better.
      I only saw this in BF1, all other games, like , Tomb Raider, Star Wars Battlefront, Space Hulk: Deathwing, Dishonored², The Witcher³, Assassins Creed Syndicate, DOOM etc., I had no problems with the R2. (And of course no problems so far with the R3!)

      You are right. I said something wrong, had to check it again...^^
      There was the old Vindicator 1.0 version - there was a 14" version, a 17" version and a 18" version available. I bought the 17" version of the Vindicator 1.0.
      'Now' (in 2016) they released for the 17R4 another version - the vindicator 2.0.
      If you have the 15R2 or the 15R3 you can buy the old one (vindicator 1.0), same as me. In 17". If you have a 17R4 - you will need the latest version, they vindicator 2.0 in 17". (www.dell.com/en-us/shop/alienware-vindicator-backpack-v2-0/apd/a9209047/gaming)

      I think you could buy the 15" Vindicator 2.0 - but if you want to go for sure take the 17" one. Then you won't have any trouble and got some extra space

    bro how much does it cost ? which country is the best to buy one ?

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This configuration cost about 1900€ / 2160$. Maybe cheaper if there is 10% off or another special offer.
      It depends. Where are you from or where do you live?

      Hey, thank you for your nice words and your subscription - but TH-cam changed their monetization requirements, so the hard work won't be worth it anymore... I will not delete my channel, but making videos without 1000 subs will be hard or won't be rewarded anymore ;) So it will be only for fun :)

    How do u find the build date?

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Berkes
      Normally (talking about Dell/Alienware Laptops) the build date is the same as the shipment date. When the company finished your computer or laptop they will also ship it or at least mark it as "shipped", when using the shipment tracking. www.techwalla.com/articles/how-to-find-the-manufacture-date-on-a-dell-laptop

    • @skepticalmechanic
      @skepticalmechanic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      GeneralHail but I bought it at Best Buy... so now what?

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian Berkes
      If the build date is so important for you... You have an alienware service tag on the bottom side of your laptop. With entering this code on the dell.com page under the support parameter, you can add your product/laptop to your products. Then you should be able to see the date.

    • @skepticalmechanic
      @skepticalmechanic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      GeneralHail the only reason the build date is important.... it will let me know weather mine is one with the heat sink issue or not..

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Berkes
      Maybe. Maybe not. Mine doesn't have any issues so far. I think it depends on more than just on the build date and not every laptop will be affected.

    • @GeneralHail
      @GeneralHail  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Patricia Espert
      Thank you. I'd definetely recommend buying the new 15R3 with the 1060 or 1070 inside. It get's hot, also the laptop, but i never had issues like with my 15R2 with the i7 6820HK Processor, there it overheated and games like BF1 were really not more playable. FPS dropped from 70/80 to sometimes 20 or less. I want recommend to NOT buy the laptop with the 6820 inside, I now have the i7 6700 and it works fine.

      GeneralHail ownordisown has a video talking about the heat problems with another person. it's a two part video talking about the subpar thermal paste and also a bent heat sync. Though the second part I think they did say alienware is gonna be resolving those issues with later shipped laptop of the kind. though I can't say for sure if it's only towards the 17 R4 or to all 3 laptops

    • @GeneralHail

      I would say no. I had has 3kg and when using in games it gets hot, but when you only use it for streaming or other things it won't get so hot. So it would be okay to you use on your lap.
