  • King Sunny Ade in 2011 had spoken with Agbaletu. He addressed issues among many others which was connected with allegations of abandonment by his old band members.
He dwelt on the concerts they attended in 1984 and mentioned the band members involved at the concerts.
The videos played on my voice and KSA's as he responds to my questions are deliberately used to show the faces and roles of members of the African Beats Members as at that time.
The third video shows the faces of the new instrumentalists and singers playing for the African Beats at the moment.
Videos used were borrowed from the pages of the original owners of the videos as instructional contents to back up KSA'S claim and illustrations.

King Sunny Ade owes them no obligations except occasional gift propelled by nostalgia. No place on planet earth a band leader is obligated to pay retirement to his members. The way we think in black world is always entails perversity. They forced KSA to pay them the way they were paid; KSA’s intention was to have a retirement system for them but they refused it vehemently.

He really handled this with great emotional intelligence; he answered the questions calmly and very frankly. And to say this was in 2011!
For an entertainer of his generation, he showed himself to be focused, principled and disciplined. Very few of the entertainers of his times, and even of today, possess such qualities.

  • @deboalder

This interview session with KSA was recorded in 2011 but I can assure you it is a timeless interview, and it, to a very great extent, vindicates KSA on the recent surge of accusations of cheating and neglect from his former friends/band members. Leadership is a very serious business and I think KSA did his best , though his best might not be enough in the estimation of the aggrieved former members.
The humility, friendliness and the act of comradeship displayed by KSA in this interview is topnotch and he spoke well about his old friends.
That said, though the effluxion of time might have changed the narrative of this topic between KSA and the aggrieved former members and that is the reason I will want to plead with Otunba Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye (MFR) to send an open invitation to these guys for a get together and reconciliation dinner. All of them are over 70s now, so they all should do the needful now. The aggrieved former band members should also eat the humble pie. I beg all of them in the name of whatever they worship.
Like the popular old French song by Dougie MacLean titled " Auld Lang Syne" goes:
" Should auld acquaintance be forgot
    And never brought to mind?
    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    And auld lang syne....."

He's responsible. This is the reason you always seen their bands with younger kids who knows no better! They get paid until they retire without any pension. Tthe problem with banding in Nigeria is the band members have zero money once they stop performing. They don't own any publishing rights, nor a cut of the proceed of the albums. This is not unique to Sunny Ade, it is just a wrong model. If you beat a drum in mega music, you should be entitled to the proceed of the sales forever, just like the lead musician. That small sale may be the equivalent of your pension till death. Unfortunately, that's not the case.
