Regarding CVH Wiseco pistons , They are designed to be used with a bushed conrod not interference fit , An Interference fit piston has more gudgeon pin clearance
Hey mx5 crank owner here. What can I say. I saw the video I thought I would have a go. Nothing ventured nothing gained. You learn by your mistakes. How many more quotes can I put in here😅 It was done on a lathe initially then thought I would get the sharpe edges off with a flap wheel. But regarding all the negative comments. At least I got out of my arm arm chair. And did something. Thanks isaak ( hope I spelt you name better than I did the crank ) Looks like you did a proper job. Just wondering what else I did incorrectly. Waiting with baited breath for Fridays video. 😊
Looks like Mr. Angle grinder custom knife edged crankshaft man cost himself a couple hundred extra quid in machine work. "A failure to understand what you're doing on YOUR part doesn't cost extra work for free on my part". The beauty of it is that it's a lesson learned not only for himself, but also for the other knuckleheads watching the video who were thinking about doing the same. DIY is a great thing for some things, and a nightmare for others... When in doubt, leave it out.
Great vidclip. Yet Again ..... :-) :-) :-) THANKS ..... That MX5 Crank..... Still looks 'Very Suspect' as it looks like 'THEY' have ground Way to Much off the 'Big End' Flanks, quite 'Hollowed Out' .... A LOT of Strength has been removed .... Sadly. ....... Please state that on your Invoice, So when it 'Goes BANG' it is Not from ANY of Your Work, 'Your' Turning is Perfect .... :-) :-) :-) Best to ALL from ChCh, NZ
Question. Though the crank is now balanced how does removing material from mass of the webs affect the design balance once the rods and pistons are attached? Cheers for any enlightenment. Edit: I've slept on it and since the pairs of pistons are moving at 180 deg on this crank there is no balance issue. My thoughts had come from single and twin thumper motorcycle assemblies .
Lee Isaac, love the content today,it's techy, especially the balancing, the customer should have saved time and let you do it,but I understand he wants a hand in building, but it's cost time to be honest, keep it up great content..😎👍🏾💯
🙈🙈🙈🙈 why would start hacking away at a crankshaft with a grinder maybe recommend adding some sand from the beach to the engine oil to bed all the new bearing in 😅
I’ve had loads of CVH turbos over the years and the only thing I’ve had fail is rods or rod bolts, You need to ask the CVH owner what sort of power figures he’s looking to aim for, the standard rods are only good up to about 200bhp, and 100% recommend updating the dolts to an ARP item. Love the channel 👍🏻
So wish I lived closer too you would love to of done some volunteering for you, yeh my mental state is up & down all started coz i had to give up work, coz of incurable illness, you do an awesome job and always look forward to watching your videos. Stay safe and mostly stay strong!!
Like and subscribe! Mate, everyone I've turned on to your channel, it's now their favourite show! No more soap operas, any of that nonsense... It won't be long til "Dave" comes calling, talking telephone numbers, then you two will have to start having fake fights, and throwing furniture around, a la "orange county choppers" (god, did we really watch that #hite! Top malarkey
If people had a clue how pointless knife edging crankshafts are in terms of a performance gain they'd stop wasting their time. Think about it, you go through all this trouble to thin the counterweights, but the big ends of the rods and the crank throws are driving through the same areas of the crankcase and oil pan, it's a bloody waste of time for anything short of the highest level of high RPM racing classes.
Someone either knows what they're doing or they don't. Someone who is actually wise knows to leave what they don't understand to someone who does and has what is required, both in terms of human and equipment factors, to do the job properly. Just 'having a go' is what a fool does, because the fool doesn't bother to educate himself (or herself) properly to both know, understand and acquire any necessary physical skill.
The correct term for describing Torque is Lb-Ft (force x distance) Think about it.. you don't say metres-newtons do you ( distance x force) I know there seems to be major confusion out there in recent years about this even professionals make this mistake for example, then everyone thinks they are using the correct terms from hearsay and You tube videos and use that expression themselves. but they aren't correct.. wrong information seems to spread like wildfire . Think of it as a foot long wrench and you put a force of 100 Lbs on the end you can visualise that.. The wrong way, a 1 Lb weight on a 100ft wrench.... although the ultimate torque will be the same . It is a case of getting your engineering terms correct , and telling your friends about it...!
The cross slide is at 90deg to the bed, it’s the compound slide that gives you the angle which is variable in degrees.

You had a go boss fair play my man
You knew to send it for balancing, that's the difference between an unwise person and someone trying stuff out and learning.
Fair play to you having a go.
Heh, If you really fuged it up, Theres pleanty more cranks out there. Cudas for having a go.
You had a go - it’s a learning experience;
Great video 👍 The RS 1600 had solid lifters because it was designed as a competition car.
It did my friend, well said!!
A great vlog glad you could sort that butchered crank
Its a top slide, the cross slide is the Y axis where the top slide bolts on to.........
Nice to see a start to almost finished process, can you show more of them please

DIY machining vs cowboy machinists
Thank god Issac is going more filming 👍
Please make a video on knife edges on crank
cross slide only moves at 90 degrees to rotation axis, 'Top Slide' is the adjustable one!
hia love the channel 👍 would be very interested the outcome on the mx5 engine build
Compound slide😉👍🍻
It 27c and partly cloudy here in Atlanta. Nice all in all . Cross slide on the lathe sound right to me.
Shaming crank grinding customer for TH-cam views, that's got to be worth some discount.
I use nylon push fit airlines. Loads better than rubber hoses.
Enjoying the “more” technical input. Ever thought about doing a 1 hour video building an engine up??
The interference fit in a press fit rod is generally 0.001" to 0.002".

Cheers Lee.
Sliding into a bronze bush, is that the same as doing it with a ginger??!! ;-)
Driven 2 rs turbos ( long time ago) both blew up, good luck 😂😂😂
A compound angle plate/fitting on the lathe
Stick it in the lathe? Better in the recycling

He did save a bit of time, there was less metal to take off with the lathe 🙂
Hello all! Love the videos!
Thanks for super good movies. what the advantage gives it and turned the crank versus the heavy crank like a cosworth
Great video.

Surprised to see the OE rods re used. Wonder what power they are good to

Hump day video. Now Friday it's gone back spring. We did have half Weds and all Thur above 20c. Bingo. Summer
What’s better, interference fit or free floating gudgeon pin.
"Balanced with a cheese grater." Hey he did a better job than me, i'd probably of cut it in 2 🤣🤣
Think I would have said scrap that crank and start again, expecting its definitely a warentee exclusion??
You spelt warranty incorrectly. I may have messed my crank up a little but at least I can spell
Yeah convinced my old Fiat Punto crank was out of balance.....got to 2500rpm or more and the NVH just incremently crept up.......
How can you take that much weight out of a counter balance without then reducing piston and rod weight to match. Show me some calculations you use.
What’s the point in knife edging a crank?
Is it worth knife edging the crank or polishing the con rods ... Cost against performance

MX5, hair cut please..from a S2k owner ;-) New crank please
How much does crank balancing cost?
If you have to ask leave it on the shelf
👍

How are you going to dummy build for piston height with interference rods?
Exactly my thoughts
Seriously angle grinder.
