Make sure you change the hose behind the valve cover....they will go or leak...I had a 93 triple locked....she is now with a new owner....love the FJ80s..mine had a 6 inch lift on 38s...4:88s...it was slow, but crawled well...
The pesky heater hose? I made sure to change that! That sounds sick! My last one I had a 6 inch lift on 40s with 410 gears and a 400hp 6bt Cummins🤠 From what I’ve experienced wheeling that rig- I want to keep a low center of gravity so I can confidently attempt more aggressive off camber lines - but man do they look good lifted!🥹
I carried a head gasket with me all the time and never needed it. I went through 3 radiators, because the flexion in the frame off roading would crack them. I finally got a custom made aluminum one made. I am now in a 200 series and have it almost where I need it..3 inch OME lift with servicable UCAs. I don't miss not being able to pass or go through passes in my 80! :)@@Austin_SaintOnge
@@DavidS-x9y dang! And radiators are so fricking expensive nowadays! I should carry a spare head gasket with me just in case too😂 That’s sick! 200 series is definitely goals! I’ve got a spare block here that I’m going to overbore and build for a turbo. Then I’ll really be sucking down the gas! Luckily gas is still cheaper than diesel here for some strange reason 🧐
August, don’t listen to him. Biggest thing you need to look out for with these 80s, is making sure you eat 14 MREs in the back while camping. The rest should sort itself out.
Sweet Ride!!! I am doing my '97 and you can watch my vids on here and listen to her purr. Good luck. I have an LC shop here in PHX. That's a low price to purchase and seemingly too low for the head work. But hey if it lasts you've saved a ton! Cheers!
Cool! I was just down in Phoenix a few weeks ago! Wished I could have stopped by. I thought it was a pretty good price too! Let me check my math: Machine shop resurfacing and valve seal verification - $225 Oil/fitler/coolant - $117 Dnj head gasket kit - $119 $461 The biggest part is the labor which I did all myself. If I took it to a shop I’d expect to pay probably $4000. You’re right, I’ll update the title with the correct amount I spent not the head gasket thanks !
In tribal areas of my country which is Pakistan, these are most loved by locals same with the 70/79 series land cruisers/prados. Most of them are non custom paid imports which are illegal in major cities. These vehicles are used by tourism companies to take tourists to multiple valleys which are tourist destinations.
Would love to see a turbo 1FZ tuned for big power! My vote would be for a rocklander build. Small lift, 37’s, focus on flex, and focus on armor. Maybe a sleeping platform in the rear but no stupid rooftop tent. I love DeltaVS and run a ton of their parts on my triple locked LX450 but I’m looking at Dissent Offroads new high clearance front and rear bumpers. You should check them out.
I actually have a spare block I’m thinking about overboring and building for boost! I’m pretty sure that’s the route I want to go. I’ll check them out!
Our triple lock LX450 had a check engine light throwing a EGR code. It was the carbon in the passage way, not the actual EGR valve itself. She has 500,000 miles on the original engine so leaving the passage clogged apparently does not cause an issue. I never could understand how pumping exhaust gases back into an engine could make an engine more efficient regardless of the cleaner exhaust exiting the tailpipe.
Good choice on location compared to LV. Nice new LC and dodge pickup! I now have to do a head gasket job too. Been leaning on doing it myself and save $3-4k
Turbo would be fun to see! I’m working on a 1995 with 225k. Smokes on startup regardless of outside temp then goes away ..I’m assuming valve stem seals? Thinking I might as well go ahead and do the head gasket and have the valve seals fixed…are you a mechanic? I’m basically a handy novice…this would be a first…or would you recommend hiring someone? Thanks for any input
I’m definitely thinking turbo! That’s pretty typical smoke on startup. The ecu throws fuel at the mixture until it’s in closed loop and warm. I’m not a certified mechanic but have done 3 of these head gaskets now and all have turned out great. It’s a huge job but if you go slow you can do it.
I noticed to day when I started it and it was smoking that it really smelled like fuel….beginning to think you’re right about the smoke on starting as opposed to the valve stems….is there anything that can be done to fix the ecu dumping fuel?
@Yotas R Us, I live really close to round lake, and build all sorts of cars including Cruisers. If you ever want to get together or need help with a build, I'd be happy to lend a hand, we're newer to the area as well and I'm looking for some car guy friends. Great video, the cruiser is in great shape, I'm kind of jealous.
That’s probably what I’ll do for the near future- gotta save up and then assess. There is something nice about having a completely stock vehicle and taking a trip back to the 90s every time you get in🤓

I had moved to Las Vegas for a job opportunity at the capital grille on the strip, but the industry there is pitiful at the moment. The entire union is on strike. Then you have F1/sphere/construction on the strip clogging everything up.
