it would be a big twist but I really do think it’s a bit too late to introduce a random love interest for one of the _main_ characters, in this case it’s will. plus mike & el’s relationship has been falling apart (s3-s4). in their last fight she says “you can’t even write it, mike.” because he can’t say he loves her. plus she says “from, mike.” like four times - the scene in the next episode where mike receives a letter from her, she signs it with “from, el.” like she was dissing him or something. he can’t even give her a _pre-made_ Valentine’s day card with the word “love” on it, the one he gives to her says “I *like* you.”

I honestly think el getting her own storyline where she figures herself out, who she likes, what she likes would be awesome. more awesome than her getting back together with mike since yk, she was cut off from the world at such a young age. she even says to mike at season one “will you be my brother?” to which mike responds with “what? no!” then she says “why not?” like she wants him to be her brother. but yeah, I absolutely respect your opinion! I guess we’ll just have to wait for s4 v2. anyway, sorry for the lengthy response, have a great day if you read this.

You can tell he still really cares about Will, I mean god he literally payed more attention to Will then he did El at the airport and roller rink. But mike is obviously going through emotional turmoil and isn't pushing Will away purposely. I feel like he has someone deeper going on and it may have something to do with Will and mikes feelings specifically.

As a young gay guy, the way Will holds on to every bit of affection that Mike gives him and looks like he’s about to cry when Mike says they’re best friends really does look like a closeted guy to me. I’ve had moments just like that where I’m so overcome with joy hearing words of love and affirmation from my straight guys friends, it means so much to me

I know everyone thinks Mike returns Will's feelings and that would be nice (byler is a very cute ship) but I honestly think he doesn't and is just straight. His attitude reminds me too much of the typical awkward attitude a lot of people have when they feel like someone has a crush on them (but aren't 100% sure) and it makes them feel a bit unconfortable because they don't feel the same way.
An attitude that says "hey I don't wanna be a douche to you cause I still care about you, but at the same time I don't wanna give you the wrong idea".
With that in mind, he could (as you said) be thinking about El's letter saying that Will is painting something for a crush and then upon seeing that Will came to the airport with it like he was gonna give it to him he thought "uh-oh I hope this is not what I think".
Thus the awkward half hug to Will's attempt at a full hug, and the "what's that?" quickly followed by a "cool" as if to say "you know what I'm actually scared to know so I'm not gonna give you a chance to say it" and later the emphasis on the "We're friends" at the skating rink as if to make things perfectly clear between them that anything other than friendship is not gonna happen.

How did you not realize? Mike is his longest friendship and the most meaningful one throughout all the seasons. Whenever the two are in the same vicinity Will is looking at Mike at some point while they're there.

Counterargument: I would like a gay character who isn't immediately paired off with somebody so they can be safe and sanitized and never more physical than a peck on the cheek like the sexless gay couple from Modern Family. I want a season 5 where it's implied that Will's not only gotten around in the past year, but that he actually has game. A scene where they're wondering how to get past the usual faceless mook guard and suddenly look up to see Will by the guard station leaning over and looking flirty talking to the guard, then they go into the guard box together, we hear a *thwack*, and then the door opens and Will pops his head out, motions for them to follow, and the mook guard spills out, unconscious.

i think it’s definitely very obvious that will likes mike and i’m aware most people think it’s one sided but personally i believe that mike could possibly feel the same. obviously in this season it doesn’t really seem that way but if you look back specifically to season 2 then you can tell how much mike cares about will and how he was literally always the first one to check on him and they also had little emotional moments where they would talk and mike would comfort will. while this could just be a friend-friend kinda thing i feel like there’s still a possibility that it’s not because they definitely are the closest out of mike, will, lucas and dustin and if you notice there aren’t very many moments between any of the other kids like there is with mike and will. i also just wanna put out there that it would be a little weird for the duffer brothers to add in all these little hints literally since season 2 for will to tell mike how he feels and then just get rejected. i feel like it would definitely ruin their relationship and it would be really awkward. so personally i don’t think they would do all that just for him to ruin a friendship between him and mike because like what’s the point in that yk like why even bother to add it in there if it’s just gonna ruin an amazing friendship they had.
Idk, I don't think it'll ruin the friendship. It'll be weird for a little bit, but then back to normal. For me I think it's 50/50, even since season two - Mike's either "that protective straight friend" or bi and probably doesn't even know it yet

Notice how in S3 and current S4 how he's giving Will the cold shoulder? It's because he's trying to rid of his feelings for Will since he views it as not right to have feelings for another guy. (Mike has internalized h0m0ph0bia, since in the 80's, being g4y was looked down upon a LOT. And we see this happening in S1 and S2 with Will and how he's treated by his peers and his father.)

the laat clip has me so soft. the way they were building off each other's sentences like the roleplay masters they are, and when will brought up dustin to the pitch, i can tell mike was impressed. i like to think that mike shot will a private, tiny grin, like a "good job ♡" towards will when others weren't looking, and will looking absolutely delighted ♡♡♡

Honestly i dont think the chances are that low…. People say theres no way mike could be gay but there are definitely hints. Like just the way mike even looks at will they look at eachothers lips a lot. Also one thing i picked up on el sends mike a letter right before he comes to visit saying “wills been painting a lot, but he won’t show me what it is maybe its for a girl.” Then the day after this letter is sent mike is kinda weirded out when will hugs him and mikes annoyed with will. When mike sees will he asks right away abt the painting and returns wills answer with a quick “cool” which seems like he’s annoyed. Also wierd mike can’t say he loves her. Because in season 3 its implied when mike said he loved her (but not actually too her) that he did that in the heat of the moment, like he can’t say it again because he never actually meant it. Also the byler parallels with other couples. Also with will and mikes fights its always seems so like sad and emotional. Like sad music playing, the fight in the rain then will left and was crying, destroyed castle byers. But when el dumped mike, mike looked disgusted at El and it seemed like nothing sad happened. Also rainbows asociated with mike and will. Mike keeps all wills drawings too. Like people say theres no chance mike is gay, but i feel like they just want to belive mikes straight and don’t pick up on the hints that are sometimes a little obvious. Also Finn says mike finds out a lot about himself this season and how he feels abt certain realationships and also noah ships byler. I feel like it has to be more then a friendship with all this and if its not i’d be pretty disappointed tbh. Will and mike have more chemistry then mike and el in my opinion. Theres even more i didnt write. So wills definitely gay and also likes mike (its cannon) but i think theres a possibility mike likes will back. As much as I hate love triangles, I’m almost starting to hope the Mike can’t say “I love you” to El because he has feelings for Will. Mike was at his best when he was looking out for Will in season 2 or trying to find him in season 1.
Mike was kinda obnoxious in season 3. He and Hopper deserved each other. I felt bad that El got stuck in the middle of their crap and trying to keep her to themselves.

El acted out of jealousy and knocked Max off her skateboard. She could have really hurt her. She became better when she hung out with Max. Then of course, she felt the need to lie to Mike.
I’ve been spoiled by Schur shows, but it almost feels like Mike and El bring out the worst in each other instead of making each better like Jake and Amy on B99. I know that people will say that it’s more realistic for them to have problems, but healthy relationships can be realistic as well.

To be fair, anyone (straight, bi or gay) that has ever hinted to or directly told their crush about their feelings without them being reciprocated knows how awkward it can be after, and sometimes unfortunately, never the same. It's the same way going the opposite way. If you are the crush and just don't feel the same for your friend, it can be very, very awkward. Neither side of the coin is fun.
