Back in 2001, I was an 18 year old freshman in college who had just diacovered DBZ (Cell games), and i was hooked! I remember going to the local stores to check out toys with my buddy. Didnt really get to buy much, but it was something to do that did well passing the time. I remember these figures and they were (questionable) eye poppers for sure! I remember the Japanese toys being so much better at the time. You are right about some figures leaving memories. I recently rediscovered some die cast Action Master Star Wars die cast that my mom had bought me before Christmas. It was in '93 or '94 before POTF2 came out. Star Wars was slim pickings back then, but i remember it being so cool just to have them displayed.
That’s awesome man! I had a die cast Vader tie, but I’m almost certain it was a micro machines one.. which would have been a few years after the time of yours. Also cool that you remember these. I would KILL to have been 18 in my small town. It felt like no one was buying the DBZ toys but the shelves were always stocked. I must have deleted these from my memory because I definitely was buying Irwin figures left and right during those Toonami days. My holy grails are the old model kits with the rubber clothes though, I just remember opening them up and realizing I'd have to build it and being upset. But I powered through and learned I liked building models and eventually started buying Gundam models as well.
I owned one of those vegetas as a kid. Pretty sure it was the majin one, but yeah I remember my parents went to the store Burlington and I lost him there somehow. All I had left was the poor rubbery skin of vegetas lmao what a flashback I just got while watching this haha

Haha I said the same thing growing up. Again, based on how sketchy their going out of business was, I think it was easier for them to sell us the same figure twice in the main line. Or if you’re Goku, 3-4 times
What's super weird is that around this same time, I received a Japanese import "Super Battle Collection Son Goku Perfect Version" that not only had swappable heads (base through Super Sayian 3) but also swappable arms. Irwin could have just done something like that, considering they reissued so many figures from that line.

This video hits feels I wasn't quite ready for. I've NEVER understood why Irwin went with this gimmick. Even as early as the Super Battle Collection Bandai were doing interchangeable hair sculpts or heads. That HAS to be easier than what Irwin actually did to try for the same effect.

These were a little before my time (literally) but it makes me wonder what I'd be like if I'd gotten into dragon ball as obsessed as I got with it before 2015 when I was a little kid in the mid/late 2000s. I remember my brother having some of the weird silver colored Burger King toys and i think one or two of those fancy movie collection figures in the space suit really high up on display. Aside from that i basically only knew it from over 9000
My parents got me the Super Buu That a rubber shell of the fat one. These have definitely been on my mind since recently there has been a Godzilla toy from the new movie with a similar gimmick. As much as people hated these ones that one is incredibly difficult to find it. I’ve never seen it in person.

I remember my neighbors mom would him these all the time and he had 2 other brothers around the same age so they’d have the figures to. I was always so jealous, I didn’t want to play with anything else except dbz toys. The best one was vegeta majin. My friends older brother had him and he was in high school at the time and we were in elementary so we’d get out at 2. We would use the fuck out of his toys before he came back. Well fast forward now I have about 80 figure collection of the new dragon stars figures. My love for dragon ball z and me being jealous they had the toys I want I made it a mission to buy what I see. I don’t appreciate my figures as much as I would if was a kid (cuz I don’t play with them) but still older me loves them and the joy I get everytime I buy a new figure is unmatched!!!
It's funny I was looking for info on the model kits that Irwin made for DBZ and stumbled on this video. It unlocked a memory of having the Majin Vegeta skin but not the inner toy. When my brother and I played with it, we used a GI Joe and it fit perfectly. I think we got him from a swap meet in a box of random toys for 5 bucks. I always assumed he was a Burger King toy.
Good grief, I remember seeing these in stores. I was an fairly avid collector of Irwin's DBZ figures back in the day, and even managed to complete a few waves, but never got these Secret Saiyan figures. Now, the only US Dragon Ball figures I own are the "Energy Glow SS Gohan" from the Irwin line, and a Dragon Ball GT "Black Star Shenron" from the Jakks Pacific line, which was gifted to me by my late sister. I had to unbox the Energy Glow Gohan since the adhesive for the protective bubble finally gave out, but the Black Star Shenron is still boxed.
@@ImpulseKidEntertainment I know it sucks, but try to get all those energy glow figures out of the box as those batteries could explode at any moment and you could be left with a defective, non functioning base for the figure. I had to do that a few years ago. You can still display them in the box if you cut the bubble carefully. Enjoy man! I remember seeing the black star Shenron rotting at a CVS in like 2009 alongside some Indiana Jones figures. I tried to go back in high school with money from my first job, and of course, it was long gone haha
@ the paint is ehh but not terrible for being super played and forgotten about and still is intact (my recent gateway into finally being able to collect brought me back to where it started )
The worst thing is I'm pretty sure that shot of the transformation gimmick in the commercial is just reversed footage of the figure being pulled out. The rubber snaps back way too fast and cleanly for something stretched out that far.

Theres also a quick single frame jump when Vegeta gets placed in the dirt with the rest of the lineup that is also either reverse footage, or a cut of it being put down cause we all know NONE of these are standing up on their own. Even without the little guy inside lol

I have nostalgia attached to the Goku figure in this set (the actual figure, not the skin suit) as is was given to me by my older brother. It was my first Dragon Ball figure, and I still have Goku to this day

I was syunned when Goku abd Raditz got blasted by this green dudes beam attack and bled. (Piccolo and his soecial bean canon.) I remember when my mom found the older figures , they weren't posable but I loved ❤ em. Piccolo was my first favorite.( until Vegeta and Broly came) But we could never find SS Goku or "Badack". (They spelled his name wrong on the old packaging. ). Then the day she did I was so suprised! Now I got a SSJ3 Goku and SSJ3 Vegeta tattoo. (Google SSJ3 Vegeta tattoo) I've played every game seen every episode. Love DBZ Abriged. When the SH Figuarts came out in 2013 I bought them from Japan instantly. It was my literal dream to have super posable DBZ figs and fiinally get a good SSJ3 Goku.(SSJ3 my fav form!) Dragonball was there for me in my darkest hours. My fav characters became Vegeta and Broly.
I remember having a couple of these figures as a kid. I had a deeply religious grandmother and she saw a program on TV about shows and toys the devil uses to corrupt kids, she took all our DBZ figures and Pokémon cards and burned them on the grill and made us bear witness... it was a major bummer to say the least.

I thought I was trippin as a kid when I saw the black hair Majin Vegeta on the back of the box. Never got to see the error Vegeta on the store shelves. I bought the corrected version but if I had saw that one I wouldve bought the black hair Majin Vegeta as well, it looks sick.
I brought a backpack full of Irwin toy figures to summer school one year as a child. They all got stolen. I had a lot of them in there. Makes me sad bro

Could you do a episode on them messing up "Bardock's name? On the back of the old toys they wrote "Badack, or Bardack". I'm not crazy bcs my mom,me,, and all my siblings remember that. The old DBZ toys were so janky but still love em.
I'm currently collecting the Irwin toys DBZ figures i have a few posted on my channel so far but I love the video and plan on collecting these again also.
I had the gohan one and I kept the super saiyan suit as well preserved as I could. I found the idea of transforming my figure cool like the show. I wanted the SS3 goku but instead I got a battle damaged ss3 goku and would pair it with my normal goku from the flying nimbus to pretend like he was transforming.
I never had one of these figures, but as a kid I remember being in KB Toys at the mall and seeing the SS3 Goku and thought it was the worst looking toy I had ever seen, to the point that the memory of it is still burned in my brain enough to make me look it up and find this video haha great review, glad my child brain was able to recognize that these were garbage
Figures with flaws seems to be a guilty pleasure of mine. Just something about them gives them more character. It's like choosing a figure with a ton of articulation or a figure with gimmicks of the same character. One seems perfect at looking the part and posing while the other is a great fidget toy while looking good that I can't put down cuz of that. I love both in either category but I can in all honesty understand where this sentiment is coming from.
please if you know/remember the old dbz figures that could bend really well, I'd say they would be like a cheap version of S.H. Figuarts, but their shirts could snap off and on their chests... man those things bring back memories

What's really baffling about this is that the Great Saiyaman figure Irwin made had interchangeable heads from helmet to sunglasses with bandana. So, that means Irwin Toys did have the resources to have interchangeable heads all along. They just chose not to do that with the Super Saiyan characters. We've definitely come along way.
Collected the original Irwin toys, but was out of it by the time they released these. I think I remembered that commercial but seeing it again made me gag with that "transformation feature". Color change with warm water feature would've been better even if Goku had to have is black hair up like a Super Saiyan
Even as a kid I always had a distaste for gimmick figures. I just want something to look as close as it can to the source. I never had these on initial release but my grandmother got me Goku and Gohan from a liquidation store a few years later. I hated the rubber figures with a passion but was….okay with the base form smaller figures. They didn’t get much play time since I had most of the other sets from Irwin. My dad use to watch the show with me and get the DVDs with me so he knew what to grab for birthdays and christmases.
Lol, what were they thinking by creating these rubber skin figures😂 The outdated super battle collection by Bandai from the early 90s look like master piece compared to these. So glad we have Evolve, Dragonstars and SH figuarts.

Holy hell. I just remembered having the Gohan figure randomly and went on a Google fueled tirade trying to find these things. No matter what I typed it wouldn't show the toys and I thought I was crazy. Then suddenly opening youtube you were the FIRST suggestion with these figures! Do you happen (for nostalgia sake) to have SSJ Gohan with air bike 67? Somehow he was one of my favorite characters and I had all the toys, including the Saiyaman that came with 3 dragonballs.
I think I may have a rare normal adult gohan variant. I own the normal violet blue gi gohan but I also have a semi light cream colored gi normal gohan as well.

Real experience for me found a trunks in my parents basement ripped but in tack after collecting toys as an adult for almost 10 years now
I had the gohan one and I kept the super saiyan suit as well preserved as I could. I found the idea of transforming my figure cool like the show. I wanted the SS3 goku but instead I got a battle damaged ss3 goku and would pair it with my normal goku from the flying nimbus to pretend like he was transforming.
I never had one of these figures, but as a kid I remember being in KB Toys at the mall and seeing the SS3 Goku and thought it was the worst looking toy I had ever seen, to the point that the memory of it is still burned in my brain enough to make me look it up and find this video haha great review, glad my child brain was able to recognize that these were garbage

Figures with flaws seems to be a guilty pleasure of mine. Just something about them gives them more character. It's like choosing a figure with a ton of articulation or a figure with gimmicks of the same character. One seems perfect at looking the part and posing while the other is a great fidget toy while looking good that I can't put down cuz of that. I love both in either category but I can in all honesty understand where this sentiment is coming from.

What's really baffling about this is that the Great Saiyaman figure Irwin made had interchangeable heads from helmet to sunglasses with bandana. So, that means Irwin Toys did have the resources to have interchangeable heads all along. They just chose not to do that with the Super Saiyan characters. We've definitely come along way.
Yeah that figure really is a waste of resources too considering how limited his articulation is. He’s essentially a statue with swappable heads lol
Collected the original Irwin toys, but was out of it by the time they released these.
I think I remembered that commercial but seeing it again made me gag with that "transformation feature".
Color change with warm water feature would've been better even if Goku had to have is black hair up like a Super Saiyan

I had a similar figure of Majin Buu as a rubber figure and kid buu as a standfard figure that would fit inside it.
There was never a version with Kid Buu. Mandela Effect.

Even as a kid I always had a distaste for gimmick figures.
I just want something to look as close as it can to the source.
I never had these on initial release but my grandmother got me Goku and Gohan from a liquidation store a few years later.
I hated the rubber figures with a passion but was….okay with the base form smaller figures. They didn’t get much play time since I had most of the other sets from Irwin.
My dad use to watch the show with me and get the DVDs with me so he knew what to grab for birthdays and christmases.
Grandmas loved these figures, apparently lol

The outdated super battle collection by Bandai from the early 90s look like master piece compared to these.
So glad we have Evolve, Dragonstars and SH figuarts.

Holy hell. I just remembered having the Gohan figure randomly and went on a Google fueled tirade trying to find these things. No matter what I typed it wouldn't show the toys and I thought I was crazy. Then suddenly opening youtube you were the FIRST suggestion with these figures!
Do you happen (for nostalgia sake) to have SSJ Gohan with air bike 67? Somehow he was one of my favorite characters and I had all the toys, including the Saiyaman that came with 3 dragonballs.

I think I may have a rare normal adult gohan variant. I own the normal violet blue gi gohan but I also have a semi light cream colored gi normal gohan as well.

As a DBZ fan I avoided these figures because they look like ass even as a kid. They never really looked like themselves from the show. As an adult I’m happily collecting the SH Figuarts versions
