  • In one of the most emotional post-game interviews ever, Oliveira talked about his struggles and how close he was to retirement. In fact this was set to be his last tournament. He said that him winning the world championship as just a normal man meant anything was possible. Absolutely beautiful moment.

    I was hoping you'd point this out because the casters also missed it, but when Oliveira goes for the insane base invasion around 23:00 he also simultaneously does medivac drops in both of Maru's most active bases. When I watched it live I didn't understand where the 35 SCV deaths came from considering there were none in the main and only a couple in the third, but Oliveira somehow killed 35 with that push. It was unfortunate that this brilliant move that completely cemented his victory was overlooked by the casters who instead praised Maru for holding the attack when in reality he fell even harder for Oliveiras tactics and lost his entire economy in catastrophe. And yes these drops were really the winning move because if he didn't get those 35 SCVs Maru would be at a slight worker advantage with a slightly smaller, although better army. I haven't seen anyone point this out over the multiple breakdowns of this game mostly because there was something else to focus on at the time, but Oliveira's tactics were even deeper than catching Maru off guard and invading his base. At that moment he was 2-3 steps ahead of his opponent who is considered to be the GOAT. Honestly I think that entire sequence by Oliveira is one of the most impressive and legendary moments in any ESport, and I hope it gets the complete recognition it deserves.

    Maru is my favorite player ever and definitely the GOAT i wanted him to win katowice so bad but holy lord Oliveira's run was so incredible i didn't even mind. i watched him trounce reynor, hero, and then maru all in the same day it was one of the most incredible things i've ever witnessed.
    just watching the "best" player of each race just slack jawed in between games going "how the hell do i beat this guy?"

  • @BRA1NST0RM
    @BRA1NST0RM ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Oliveira (Time) was practising 15 hours a day, and he had beaten the best players in each race (Raynor, Hero and Maru), so it's a well deserved win! And the way he was cheering for each win, even on the group stage is truly inspiring, and he even started crying when he lifted the cup. Such an amazing story!

      He had no professional coaches, but he had assistants. He practiced with Reynor, Serrral and many other players a lot. Coffee and Nice were with him, discussing the tactics before the match.
      Fun facts: During the after match analysis streaming, Oliveira said that, Coffee predicted that herO would go for stargate in the first game, so Oliveira blind countered the build. In fact, herO went twilight, but Oliveira's build happened to counter this build too. He didn't realize the mistake until the streaming.
      He also has sponsorship (KaiZi Gaming, or more precisely, SCBoys and their friends). And he is from a riiiiiich family. If he retires he will have to inherit the business.

    • @deepseer

      @@pablosrf3881 Language barrier is not a big issue for him. He took the interview after the match in English. He can communicate with Serral in English in 2v2 matches. On the other hand, most Korean players (except Solar afaik) doesn't speak English well.

    I believe 22:34 was the point where Oliveira sealed the game. While the main attack was happening in Maru's base, Oliveira split 3 liberators to Maru's 6 and 10 o'clock expansions. Let's just consider the main attack as a break even for both players (debatable) Oliveria set himself well ahead with a 35 scv margin. Only after the fight at 22:58 did Maru check his expansions and finds out.

    Another crazy move that Oliveira did was during his crazy rush into maru's main, he also sent liberators to Maru's 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock bases which racked up the 35 SCV kills while Maru was scrambling to reclaim his main. The game was so chaotic that the observer, uthermal and even indeed Maru himself seems to have missed this until both minerals were cleaned out.
    And you can see how insanely well timed this 3 prong was:
    22:24 - liberator arrives at 9oclock base from the north and sieges to the west
    22:26 - oliveira's army arrives at Maru's main ramp
    22:49 - liberator arrives at 6oclock base from the east and sieges to the southwest

    Oliveira does something so clever in this game after the initial back and and forth. He starts of with ravens, switches to mass tanks then mass vikings followed by liberators which is forcing Maru to react to his build. Every time Maru engages Oliveira has an advantage and targets down one element of Maru's army upsetting Maru's army composition and forcing Maru to react to his builid. All of the engagements are done in the center of the map for map control. Finally Maru sees an opening to attack Oliveira's production and the trap is set. Oliveira moves his main army forward and attacks Maru's Main with twin attacks on his income at the same time. This is a masterclass of strategy made so much more impressive performed under the pressure of such a high paced game. Sun Tzu would be impressed.

    New challenge idea: only marines and medivacs with speed upgrade. You either attach your opponent in sneaky fashion (attack from many directions with fast medivacs, dropping on tanks, etc.)...if the opponent is too compact to attack this way, you harass all his bases at the same time - again with marine medivac. Constant terror. Guerilla style.

  • @SasukeChia
    @SasukeChia ปีที่แล้ว

    Sensei, do you think the last patch weighed on Maru's playing style in these games? or was it something more mental? I say this because whenever I watch Maru's games, when he tries to be aggressive and fails, he changes his style to something more defensive and carries the game into lategame, with ravens, vikings and tanks. But with this new patch with ravens being nerfed to the ground, that became impossible. What do you think about?

    • @deepseer
      @deepseer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maru was slow to adapt to patch changes. After the patch it has become clear that viking+liberator+tank > mass raven+marine+tank.
      The proof is: a few days later, in World Team League, Maru was defeated by Spirit (Oliveira's teammate) in the same way that he lost the last game against Oliveira.
      Also it seems that Maru was always hit by liberators. In the game that Maru lost to Spirit, he had to build 4 turrets around a command center to cover all angles, after constant liberator harassments.
      Maru's performance in WTL playoffs was abysmal. 1:1 against Spirit (narrowly escaped 0:2). When the chance to take revenge on Oiveira came, he stepped back. Finally, in the ace match, he lose to Reynor (who was having a fever from COVID) in a diamond-class match.

    Dude, this isn't a "regular guy." This is TIME with a new handle. He's one of the most experienced SC2 players in the world! Why on Earth do people keep acting like he's become a completely different person suddenly!?

      Would you call Uthermal a "normal man", probably not, he's way more experienced than Time and probably had a better tournament record than Time before this last run.
      Can you see Uthermal beating the best of the best to win the world championship, absolutely shattering his tournament record in the process? I think not
      Between his rapid rise over the last few years and his record shattering world championship tournament outing, I'd say it's almost impossible to frame the Oliveira run incorrectly by overexaggerating his accomplishment.

    It was Match fixed. The koreans played to lose. You can actually see it in their plays. Watch maru vs byun, vs maru vs time

    Honestly, I think it was entirely intentional that a very major patch overhaul + new map set was timed so shortly before IEM. It was expected that Europeans would be the quickest to adapt to changes, so it was supposed to improve their performance in the tournament. I am glad that it backfired so heavily. Maybe now they will not make such stupid moves shortly before the final tournament of a season.
    It's as if an athlete competed a whole year to get a ticket to Olympic games, and then just two weeks before the OG new rules for the sport are made, making a completely random guy win the OG. And people even call it a great underdog story. Wonderful...
