It’s true my dad coddled my mom for years and always babied her and now that he is older and needs more support all she does is complain.
My husband treats me with respect but doesn’t baby me and for that I am grateful! I like being slightly independent 💗

Doug you’re not off the hook two years. You’re making her wait till her breaking point… yeah Stacey would just nag all the time if you did things in a timely fashion 🤦🏻‍♀️ This is some simple minded thinking...It truly is insulating. She’s not your dog to train...what a complete turn off..you really are bumming me out🙄

Bethlehem Eisenhour the things my Mather complains about having to do anything herself like cook her own food or actually walk into the grocery store. (She even complains about having to get her own coffee sometimes 🤣) She was 30 minutes late to her own daughter’s wedding because she had to do her hair just right for pictures. Once she asked me to put butter on her toast because her hands were “too week” even though they aren’t and weren’t. She wants to grow a garden but is worried about it being too much work. Once she was rocking my niece in a rocking chair right next to the crib while I was nursing my own daughter and she said “can you put her (my niece) in her crib because I’m to tired.” Mind you I was breast feeding my daughter at the time. Btw my mom is 54 in healthy condition and the doctors say she is in fine health. Honestly I think she complains for attention. My Dad helps run a bus company and has been a little more busy and with all her kids out of the house and living many hours away. (I call her weekly sometimes daily) When we were children my father did everything for my mom, bent over backwards to try and keep her happy. I remember almost every Christmas even when we didn’t have much he would try and get her a necklace or new kitchen pots or perfume etc but it was never good enough she would always make a big deal about it not being what she wanted or the right color and always ended up returning it. Honestly I’m here to support her when she truly needs help but I feel like right now she is just starting to learn to be an adult. Sometimes I wonder if my dad would have asked her to be a little more independent when they were younger and didn’t literally do everything for her if she would be different now. It’s weird it’s like I’m teaching her that she has the strength to take care of herself. I encourage her when ever I can. But she isn’t sick and neither is my father. They are still pretty healthy and young yet. -

I’m a 64 year old woman. I ran my own under ground pipes for my drip system in my small raised garden. You can set up an automatic gage for a few dollars each bed. I also built a pvc system to cover the garden when it’s cold, or too sunny, and to keep critters out when necessary. But something I learned years ago is time is money. And my time is valuable. So glad you found a way to make more time in your life. It’s good for the soul to work hard. But it’s really good to have options. You never know when you might have an injury or have to leave for a few days. An alternative way to water can be a life saver. I learned years ago to do some plumbing, some electric, fix fences, fix a leaky roof, hang doors etc. Never really had a reliable man so I did it myself. You two divide up the work beautifully. I often wonder how any one person could manage the entire Homestead. But finding timesavers is certainly a critical way to balance work with some relaxation so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Kathy, I’m thinking about running some kind of irrigation in my raised beds. I’d love to see what you set up. Do you have pictures of what you did? I was thinking of using sections of drip hoses. Our beds are 4x8.

    • @KatMa664
      @KatMa664 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Babz Z I don’t have photos of the system as it was under the mulch but you can buy systems that are expandable. They are available at Home Depot and other garden supply stores. One main outlet leading to a hose or a pipe You decide where to cap it off or extend it. You draw out your plan on paper. Depends how you want to do your garden. One way is to run your drip hose in the trenches and mound up the area you are planting in. That way your plant’s roots will go deep for the water and be stronger. And you can see your hoses and inspect for leaks or clogs.

All this summer, we collected the rain water and my husband and I and our son went out to water plants. Yeah, it takes a good while. But if we hadn't done this, many plants would have died in the heat and we would not have had the amount of produce that we did. We are not totally off grid...but if we were in our 20's or even 30s, and had to start over, we would do as Doug and Stacey have done. Hindsight is 20/20 folks. If you are young, and want to get started in this lifestyle...do you homework and then get going! Learn from those who have gone before you and created their homesteads. Its a lot of work and I know that Doug and Stacey will agree....but in the end, it is so worth it. Even small steps toward being more self-sufficient is great. Do what you can do. Homesteads are not built overnight.... Bit by bit we work toward our goals. Do what is right for you and what fits into your dreams.
Last word: Don't let the dreams of others ride up on you. People are going to interject their own ideas on what you should or should not do....You do what is right for you.

Thank you for teaching me new stuff and reminding me of what already know. I have an urban farm and utilize all my grey water. That means bucket by bucket. I put a 26 gallon plastic storage tub into my bathtub and I stand in that to collect my water for flushing the toilet and watering my garden. (My plumbing works but water is so expensive, here in East Oakland California. Additionally, it is almost a moral imparative to reuse any and all water. Further, we gon't get rain after April/May)
For the grey water from my washing machine, I spent $10 and did low tech pvc pipes and gravity feed to an outdoor 55 gallon drum. But again, it is the bucket brigade... Frankly, people around here think I'm cracked, but never mind! 🤠 I certainly don't have to hit the gym, as I get a good workout.
My property is a big fixer upper project. It took everything I could to get into it. But it's just like you say, you don't get things instantaneously. You gotta work for it, and build on what you have. At some future point I will have the luxury of flipping a switch to get grey water pumping. That's a little down the road. Something to work towards. And 3 years ago, I had nothing. Today, I have a work in progress, that I am proud of and for which I am grateful. I have turned nothing into something big-big for me. I am finally living out what I've spent the last 30 years dreaming about. This wasn't my dream property, but I asked God to plant me where I would remain green and growing. This is where I landed. Did I mention how grateful I am?
BTW I think I had the pleasure of speaking with you, Doug. It was last September, at the Baker Creek Seed Festival in Sonoma, CA. We just said hello, in passing. lt was my first time there and I felt like I had finally found my kind-LOL. I work 3rd shift and came up after. It was a last minute decision and I pulled an all-nighter to go. (It was after that festival that I finally owned up to myself-out loud- that I have a homestead. I am super angry at The Rona that we have to miss it this year.)
Again, thank you for teaching me.

Wow that brings back memories. I use to have to go to the stream just over from my veg garden to haul water up & water everything. I did this for a couple of years. We had a huge pipe hose running way up stream but hubby hadn’t connected it yet. I was pregnant (7 months) with our youngest & was hauling buckets of water up just to keep everything going. Till one day I just lost it & went off at my husband. We have had a hose in the garden now for almost 7 years 😂. But I learnt to do it the hard way first & I know what I’m capable of 👍
Oh & we live off grid but have solar panels & a large water wheel for power to deep cycle batteries. But we went without for a couple years. I miss those days. Everything was much simpler.
    Love this video x

Stacy is definitely worth that $300, & much more!!! If you Doug, had been the garden waterer, you probably would have spent that $300, pronto! But I applaud you for getting up early & taking care of that problem!
It’s funny how men need their tools to work well. Yet women who cook, for example, sometimes go without good tools for the kitchen, like using cheap pots & pans, for example. I’m not talking about lots of fancy equipment. I’m talking about the basics. Another example would be that big log splitter. I’m sure that cost way more than $300! I know there are log splitters that work well, yet are not that elaborate. You might have to pick up the log to put it on the splitter,
But that’s not a big deal for most men, plus you get the added benefit of getting nice muscles!
So, thank you for showing the problem, along with the solution!!! Great video!

Stacy, thanks for keeping it real on the homestead. I have often wondered how the moments go when you have had enough of enough! Perhaps, you could install a simple watering system that helps with each growing bed to ease some of the burdens up a bit. I have never thought of you as a slouchy or timid homesteader. I have seen countless times when you have shown patience and understanding when interrupted or talked over during the videos. Thanks for "Keeping" it real!

That was a good reminder too, that leaving our hoses in the sun in summer heats the water up so much, that if you water your plants with that you'll kill them, & then the next day they're flat & the foliage looks like boiled lettuce would, & you'd be scratching your head, like wha hop'n???? That kind of heat baking on a hose can also shorten the life of a hose, so if you can, keep your hoses in the shade, even if coiled up under a tarp & when in use, the end & nozzle can be right there where you need it, next to you, under an opened umbrella.

Stacy you are way more patient than I believe I could ever be ... I complain about dragging a hose around our yard .. and it only goes so far here. Kinking for me means walk back and unkink, stretch it out so it doesn't kink, and constantly check for kinks. I just have a potable water garden hose hooked up to a line hooked up to where we patched in for the well ... gravity fed sounds good to me.
And yes be careful with how hot that water can get in the hose .. I've found certain times of day are better for not getting burnt!
