I think it more accurate to say that they were of their time and that time was better. For something to be ahead of its time, that would suggest that the time ahead became better, when this is not necessarily the case.
I can't get over how great this movie was. There's so much love put into the way they depict homes, computers, medical equipment, vehicles, _people._ And every single beat of the plot is motivated by pointed and intentional social commentary that _lands._
So I heard about this film from a rough old biker at my workplace. Never thought I'd be having a conversation about anime with a middle-aged biker in an engineer's workshop, but 2021 is full of surprises.
Wow, I watch old anime movies for the nostalgia with few expectations, but the creativity and strong pacing of this one really puts it up there! Fantastic movie :D
This is one of the best off set anime ever. From the classic hand drawn to the mix with computer animation. Modern computer and ai tech ideas. Amazing the first time I saw this was in VHS from Japan.
I haven't seen this since it aired on Sci-Fi Channel's Saturday Anime way back in the day, and I'm not gonna lie, hearing that end theme for the first time in 20+ years almost made me cry.
'Hashire Jitensha', composed (and arranged?) by Bun Itakura, vocals by Mishio Ogawa. An alternate mix of it appears on Mishio's 1992 album 'Ureshii no Moto'.
This anime was dealing with a lot of actual futuristic concepts people in the medical/technology field have been thinking about for decades “I wonder if there’s a machine or device that could assist the elderly 24/7 since it’s a lot of work for humans to do it?” As a Mechanical Engineering major, I find it interesting.
Another way of looking at it is that this is trying to make a machine that lets us forget the elderly. Erasing old people from daily lives is one of the crueler things modern industrialization has inflicted upon society if you ask me. Now, a tool that empowers the elderly to be part of society, *that* would be something.
I actually cried at 1:09:30 His expression hurt so much, how can a VHS-era anime ova do that when current stuff cant. I'm 40 years old dammit, I shouldn't be able to cry anymore.
I can recognize the thematic style of Otomo, same guy who made Akira, so cool. Though this movie makes me kind of want to become a health freak so that I'm strong enough to be self sufficient even when I'm old.
Roger Ebert, writing in the Chicago Sun-Times, observed: "I cannot imagine this story being told in a conventional movie. Not only would the machine be impossibly expensive and complex to create with special effects, but the social criticism would be immediately blue-penciled by Hollywood executives."
The thing what bothers me the most with today's anime: Everything has to fall into a genre and play within those genre rules. Instead of just being a good anime that tries to tell a story, studios try to be the next hit in their genre. It went from being creative and experimental to just play into a trope. That being said, it would describe Hollywood movies too, but they're creatively bankrupt on top of that.
