    In the books Katniss and Peeta were 11 when he threw her the bread in the rain. He saw his mom run her away from their garbage (because she, her mom and sister were dying of starvation and were desperate for food.) He did burn the bread on purpose knowing his mom would probably physically and verbally abuse him and tell him to throw it to their pigs....he checked to make sure his mom wasn't paying attention and threw it to her instead. It shows how genuinely kind he is and that he was always in love with her from the first time he saw her at school....and Katniss saw Peeta as the person who saved her....motivating her to step up, hunt, and provide for her family since her father had passed away and her mom was in a dark depression. ❤

      @@shaniquewright1951 same here!! I saw the first Hunger Games movie soon after it was released but before reading the books. I liked the movie a lot so I almost immediately started on the book. The bread scene was the difference that stood out and irritated me the most. It doesn't really show that Peeta cared for Katniss way before the games (it looks more like a second thought and pity towards Katniss) and it barely shows that Katniss feels she owes Peeta for saving her. It's so much more meaningful and profound in the book. I made sure to read Catching Fire and Mockingjay before the films came out as I have for the prequel too, lol.

    Haymitch's attitude comes from a combination of what happened to him after he won his Games and 24 years of watching children come and go, dying in the Games and him never being able to help any of them. Haymitch warning Katniss about showing up The Capitol makes more sense knowing his backstory, which is never covered in the movies, Haymitch won his Games by exploiting an arena mechanic, cheating in the eyes of The Capitol, so they retaliated by killing his girlfriend and entire family. Also, in the book Cato was being mauled by the mutts until the sunrise.

    There is supposed to be a new venue for the Hunger Games each year. Each one is created by the Gamemakers and afterwards citizens of the Capitol like go there on vacation and take pictures in their favorite spots. The arena for this Hunger Games is just the woods really--which is lucky for Katniss. In the next movie it looks more cultivated. They didn't really have the budget this film.

    some things the movies dont explain:
    the three fingers: The Three Finger Salute is used by District 12 residents when they have to say thanks or just to show that the person is loved and respected by them. It's a gesture of admiration, gratitude and saying goodbye to someone you love.
    the mockingjay: The father of the species was the jabberjay, an exclusively male muttations species that the capital invented to spy on rebels during the first rebellion. Jabberjays could memorize entire conversations and repeat them back to their Capitol handlers. However, rebels caught on and fed lies to the birds, sending them back loaded with misinformation. After that, the Capitol shut down the operation and jabberjays were released into the wild in the hope that they would die off. They eventually did, but not before mating with female mockingbirds, producing the mockingjay. this was unforeseen, because no one expected jabberjays to be able to reproduce with other bird species. It has become a symbol of rebellion.
    also after katniss and prims fathers death, their mom became veryyy depressed and wouldnt even get out of bed. they ran out of food and katniss became very malnourished and was trying to sell prims baby clothing for food. peeta burned the bread on purpose so he could give it to katniss. if it wasnt for him, she would have been dead. he had an abusive mom and he knew he would get punished for it but he did it anyway
    and the reason katniss missed was because she was only used to her fathers homemade bows lol

    In the book the finale is way more gruesome but of course they had to change it for the movie to make it PG-13. In the book the mutts has the facial features and resemblance of the fallen tributes. Katniss even points out one that looks like Rue and Glimmer (the girl killed by the wasps). Also when she shot Cato with the arrow and he fell in the movie she shoots him instantly after but in the book he suffered all through the night being mauled before Katniss shot him to end his and their suffering. After the games Peeta lost his leg and had to get a prosthetic bc the injury was to severe. Katniss also was dead in her left ear the entire games bc of the explosion of the supplies though this was surgically repaired after. So yeah a lot more devastating and gruesome things happen in the book even Rue's death is more sad The Hunger Games is the only book where I cried at a characters death and it was Rue's bc the book goes into more detail during her death.

      I don’t think Kato was naked. It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but wasn’t the reason he was still alive mostly due to the fact that he had received body armour as his gift, and it kept the muts from being able to chew him basically. And the reason Katniss couldn’t kill him straight away is because the muts had dragged him into the cornucopia, so she couldn’t get a clean shot on him all night? Or am I remembering that completely wrong? Lol

In the scene were the dogs are being sent out the book actually informs you that not only are the hounds genetically engineered to be ruthless killer's, but they actually have the "eyes" of the deceased tributes. At one point in the book Katniss comes face to face with a hound that has Rue's eyes and she sees' that and would be something that haunts her in the later books.

    There's the capitol, then districts 1-12. Basically the closer to the Capitol, the wealthier and better treated a district is. The Capitol is obviously the wealthiest and has all the power and influence. The people there seem so cruel and uncaring because they legitimately don't understand the state of the districts or what the reality of having to sacrifice everything is like. They have been taught that all of it is just entertainment. There's actually a part in one of the books where Katniss realizes that Effie really did mean them the best, but had no frame of reference for how to actually express that to children who suffered so much, and were almost guaranteed to die.

    I say this on a lot of Hunger Games reaction videos but I have always believed that Foxface (the girl who died from the berries did it on purpose). In the training scene she's the one they show to be really good at identifying plants. She probably figured once Clove was gone she had no chance. She's smaller than Cato and Thresh and her district mate is dead so she doesn't have the numbers advantage against Katniss and Peeta. She would have known what nightlock was and knew it would be a quick death. Taking herself out could have put her family at risk but "accidentally" eating the wrong berries. Her family would be safe.

    There is a theory that Foxface (the girl that ate the berries) actually knew the berries were poisonous and killed herself. 🥺💔 Knowing who was still alive at that stage of the Games (Cato, Thresh, Peeta and Katniss), she didnt see any way to win so ate the berries to take her life quickly. In the training part before the Games, you see her going through the wild plants exercise with ease so it would be surprising that she wouldnt know Nightlock was poisonous

      Sorry if this is too long, and I hope I don’t come off as annoying because I am going to pull an ‘um… actually ☝️🤓’ moment but I just thought I’d explain something, because I see this theory all the time and I know it’s a theory but it’s just not true. I guess I can understand how the theory can come from that one movie scene, but I think people heavily misinterpret what foxface is doing in that training scene. What she is doing has nothing to do with identifying edible or deadly plants, in fact it’s a matching game which seems to actually be more about patterns and reflexes with reactions times, which is more of her strengths.
      Foxface is smart yes, but she’s not smart because she’s knowledgeable. Just like her nickname of foxface suggests, she’s smart because she’s sneaky and cunning. She doesn’t know how to gather food on her own, but what she can do is follow other people with food closely without them knowing and taking small sections of food so they don’t notice. Before katniss blew up the careers pile, that’s what foxface was doing with them. She was taking food from the careers the entire time and when katniss blew up their supplies, foxface lost her food source as well.
      Especially book wise, foxface was described as emaciated when she died, she was starving because she was struggling to get food, she was desperate for anything at this point. Not just with the berries she also took cheese that Peeta and katniss had in their food pile, and if foxface did it deliberately why would she steal other food? Especially since she stole that little so that they wouldn’t notice. The reason foxface died is purely because people often worry about underestimating their opponents but overestimating them could be just as dangerous. Peeta collected the berries because he actually thought they were edible, so that made foxface think that they were edible as well because if Peeta did it as a trap knowing she was watching she wouldn’t fall for it. Peeta didn’t know so she assumed if Peeta was going to eat them then it must be safe, which is her downfall. It’s a death Peeta feels genuinely guilty for because he didn’t mean to do that.
      Even if we say that foxface did learn about plants there would still be no way for her to know what those berries are. Katniss even says that nightlock berries weren’t in the plant books in training and they are a specific type of berries that only grow on the outskirts of district 12 and they look almost identical to another type of berry you can actually eat. It’s why katniss knows what those berries are but Peeta doesn’t, because katniss’ father took her out to the woods illegally to hunt and would teach her these things and what to look out for before he died, katniss his spent most of her life out in the woods and learning these things. Peeta may be from district 12 where these berries grow but he’s never been outside the fence, he’s a bakers son and someone from the merchant part of town. Which in comparison to the seam where katniss is from is a lot more well off since his family are shop owners and isn’t used to be starving because him and his family eat the stale bread no one wants, so he didn’t learn those survival skills. In fact katniss is very lucky because the only ones who even go out to the woods to hunt are her and gale, so most people wouldn’t know what those berries are. Technically katniss shouldn’t either because she’s not allowed to go outside the fence to hunt, which is another reason why snow is so mad about the berry incident because that’s another reason why he knows she’s been defying the rules.

    For the reaping process: boys and girls of ages 12-18 go into the reaping. Each year your name is entered consecutively, and you can put your name in more times for more rations for your family to survive, hence Katniss asking Gale how many times his name is in it.
    Anyone can volunteer as long as they are in that 12-18 age bracket, and a girl can only volunteer for a girl and a boy for a boy. No parents or adults can volunteer.
    In 74 years, there has been 1,800 tributes (thanks to Haymitchs game where they sent double the number of kids). 74 victors. 150 tributes per district. And Katniss is the very first volunteer in 74 years.

    • @mattc3581
      @mattc3581 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There are a lot of flaws in the maths, the economics and the strategy in the books. A lot of it just doesn't make any real sense. The chance of no young child with an older sibling being picked in District 12 and having their sibling volunteer instead of them seems massively unlikely. Honestly I can't imagine this not happening relatively often. There also seems no sane reason why the outer districts wouldn't work out someone to volunteer each year like the careers. Even if they do their own draw from the oldest kids to choose someone it would allow every single child in the district to put their name in the pot extra times and get extra food and resources for their families, and only ever be at risk when they were 18.

    • @gwenjackson8583
      @gwenjackson8583 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mattc3581yeah, I agree. I find it hard to believe that no one ever volunteered in 74 years to protect a loved one. Or that no one ever got enraged at their child dying in the arena and started a riot before Rue. But I’m willing to suspend disbelief since the story is so good.

    • @catalinapuebla5512
      @catalinapuebla5512 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I really thought that the tributes from districts 1 and 2 were mostly volunteers... because they had the resources to have the training, plus the fact that they almost saw this as a game too by being so close to the capitol, bieng a volunteer was an act of honor and to prove that they were better as district.
      by that, katniss would be the very first "real" volunteer, motivated by love and caring for her sister. But I think it was the desperation in her that made the people in the capitol cheer for her, because it was like she had a motive to root for her (that she could see her sister again and that she can continue to protect her in the future if she came back home)

    • @MsAriesQueen
      @MsAriesQueen 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @mattc3581 I hear your argument for sure!!
      From the way that I was reading the books, it's from katniss point of view in district 12. So the comment about no volunteers only goes to district 12 not the other districts.
      Also it is stated that training for the arena is actually illegal and katniss and peeta seeing ruesdisctrict in 11, they already remark on how different it is and that they probably wouldn't be able to hunt or anything. Making it even more likely as the districts get closer to the capitol. So even in district 12 where peacekeepers turn a blind eye at hunting (because they got something out of it) I don't think they'd turn a blind eye at training. And alot of district 12 is malnourished to start.
      In terms of just families volunteering. I can see this playing out in two ways.
      1. They did have volunteers at one point but no one remembers or wants to remember - via backlash of the capitol (katniss mom said there used to be alot more brutality with whipings) so people stopped doing it out of fear
      2. I see the districts like olden days. When mothers would have multiple kids because they didn't know who would survive. Peeta, katniss, gale, rue all come to mind. When you have other mouths to feed you don't want the oldest or strongest volunteering because then you are possibly just leaving your family to die
      Really I just like talking about the hunger games and thinking of the world haha

    I'll add some context for things that were in the book but were not mentioned in the movie.
    Not only is a child's name added more times if they get food from the capital, but it's also added one more time each year until they turn eighteen.
    They can get enough food for each member of their family, including themselves, by putting their name in one time for each of them. If a twelve year old gets enough food for their family of six, their name goes in seven times. If they get enough food for their family again the next year their name goes in 14 times at just age 13 and it keeps adding up every year.
    The sign everyone does in the beginning with the three fingers is, "an old and rarely used gesture of our district occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love."
    In districts 1, 2, and 4, it's considered such an honor to win the games that children in those districts will be professionally trained until they turn 18, then volunteer. That's why that girl was mocking her.

  • @mjm3091
    @mjm3091 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    1:50 District means state - Hunger Games' country - Panem is built on the corpses of a alternative USA. It's one of those futuristic dystopias, where after future war country just fell apart and was taken up by a group of rich people that now have 13... I mean 12 enslaved districts that work mostly for specific centralised industry to keep the whole country rolling. Making you wonder what happened with the rest of the world tbh (probably decimated in nuclear war and violent climate changes - as we can see that American population and the continent itself shrunk).
    6:35 To be fair some details has been cleaned up more or less over the years. But it did end up being like that - if you react to the new movie prequel, you will learn slightly more as its dated at 10th Hunger Games (this movie shows 74th Hunger Games).
    9:40 It's random... Unless someone has hand in the papers and all of the papers are just the same name. Didn't really happen in the series, but with how corrupted everything is? Possible.
    36:15 Its not really explained here, but a lot of the crazy animals were actually technologies made and used in the war against rebels. Some of those did backfire - like the Mockingjay - the golden bird pin Katniss wore, and the bird she and Rue use to communicate was actually a hybrid of one of those mutts and a common bird. This is the era where humans heavily affected their ecosystems.
    Those wasps specifically may be a reference to real world mix of bees humans created - which were mix of European honey bees and African bees. Results did in fact create a bee that produces more honey, but African bees do not commonly live around humans - the mix turned out extremely violent (and they attack in swarms). Bad part about is that the new bees are overtaking the local bees in the North and South America right now. Mix that with people allergic to getting stung and you have multiple more deaths per year caused by bees.
    Hunger Games is in a way a commentary on our world - a dystopia pointing the things that are wrong or specific about our world and the direction we are taking. This is our world put to the extreme.
    37:50 Those are old type mines - as Capitol isn't really willing to spend a lot of money to support certain districts or expand their technologies. Those issues have been somehow fixed in modern days, but methan and other gas explosions within mines is a thing that happens. That's why in movies you see people go down into mines with canaries - to see if there isn't a deadly gas, including the ones that burn (as most of these are heavier than normal air - they usually collect at lowest spots). This is a risk when you dig into ground where a lot of gases and liquids are stockpiled over the years. Especially when you mine for coal, there may be natural gas reservoirs as well.
    38:10 Hardcore depression is easy to get for widows. Especially in this case where the father was pretty much their bread bringer.
    42:15 In books we know that Katniss saw her sister in Rue. She very likely would unlive herself to make Rue the winner at the end.

    Sadly, Peter also has big siblings of the same gender, but neither of them is even mentioned in the movies so they stayed quiet and kept their heads down. One of his big siblings is an adult so he wasn't able to volunteer and the other one was 17 or 18 so he was able to volunteer but he didn't. The three fingers pressed to the lips then held up. It's an ancient thing in Pan. Am well ancient to them. It's still very in the future for us cuz this is at least 100 or 200 years in the future. It's several hundred years in the future because Panam is the United States if you look at maps online Panam is the United States but it's shrank because of sea levels rising so it's a smaller country. It's still not small by any stretch of the imagination and it's broken up into the capital which is in the Rocky mountains and the districts. Most of the East Coast where I live is 12 so it's multiple states. They make it look like it's a town in the movies, but it's multiple states. It's huge. Each district is bigger than a lot of the smaller countries in europe. I'm pretty sure the capital is even bigger than England

    With District 12 being about coal, I'm surprised they don't have more victors and even career tributes. Coal miners are very tough, so are their kids.

      But district 12 are the poorest and aren’t fed, so they are starving and dying out and live in awful conditions so a lot of miners are in bad shape with the coal dust everywhere. Plus district 12 is actually one of the smallest districts, district 11 for example is also poor but that district is huge.

      You can't start mining until 18, so they don't have that strength until they're too old. Katniss specifically mentions this.

    This world is separated into the capitol and then 13 districts. The higher the district number, the further it is from the capitol and the poorer the people are. In the districts close to the capitol, particularly district 1, people of the appropriate age are trained for years and then they volunteer. Because of years of training, district 1 and 2 are usually the winners of the games. Each district has a particular focus or industry and that's what they supply to the capitol. District 13 tried to rebel at some point and was bombed until it was completely destroyed, so, technically, there are only 12 districts now. District 12 are coal miners, but I don't remember which of the other districts are what. One grows crops, another one provides lumber, and a third one is on the coast, so they deal with fishing. District 13 was their military, complete with military tech like bombs.

    I remember finally watching and reading these as a High School assignment since I was never interested in the series personally, and I kind of feel like I did miss out just a little bit

    In the book the dogs have the faces of the fallen tributes, and Cato was wearing armor that meant that the dogs onl tortured him and Katniss had to deliver the final blow. And at the end they had to watch a highlight reel of the games

    Catching Fire is the best of the series. It really is an outstanding film, whether you're already into the Hunger Games or not.

    42:19 I was literally crying watching this movie for the first time. I know the entire song. Deep in the meadow under the willow a baird of grass, a soft green pillow, lay down your head and close your sleepy eyes, and when you awake....The sun will rise.
    I'm lucky enough to say I saw TBOSAS on a premier day at the cinema and I really recommend the prequel but always remember HEKILLEDFINNICKHEKILLEDFINNICKHEKILLED-Coryo... he is so sexy men
