  • After two years of absence, the legendary race was once again celebrated in style with a resounding success of participation.
There was a desire for the Font Vella Lanzarote International Marathon to celebrate its thirtieth edition, after not being able to experience it since 2019. So much was noticed that the record number of runners was exceeded with more than 2,000 registrations made up of athletes from numerous countries around the world, from more than 40 different nationalities and from the five continents.
A sensational atmosphere was promised, with an atmosphere that had been felt for weeks before the start of the race. So all the ingredients were in place to experience in style the thirtieth anniversary of the oldest marathon in the Canary Islands. The rain, infrequent on the island, made an appearance in the final moments of the race but that did not overshadow the great day that was lived before and after the event.
Expectations were exceeded. The formula for success of this event generates a competition with the maximum guarantees that both participants, fans and spectators enjoyed a sporting spectacle.
The laureates Ciaran McGonagle and Yvonne Van Vlerken, were the winners in the queen modality, the 42 km Marathon, with a time of 02:33:27 and 02:55:59, respectively.
This distance started from the epicenter and heart of the 30th edition of Font Vella Lanzarote International Marathon, the vicinity of the Sands Beach Resort Hotel. From there you could experience firsthand all those sensations of the eagerly awaited starting gun that would be heard at 08:00 hours.
Between that magical finish line were Nollaigh O'neill (03:02:26) and Clarke Kennedy (03:03:40), who completed the women's marathon podium. In the men's category, Iacopo Brasi (02:34:24) won the silver medal, while the bronze went to Diogo Baena (02:34:34).
From Puerto del Carmen, at 10:30 a.m., the runners of the 21 km Half Marathon set off for Costa Teguise. Champions were proclaimed Ahmed El Mazaoury, with a great time of 01:07:13; Rachel Hodgkinson who reached the finish line after 01:18:24.
These were followed by Carys Mai Hughes and Sindy Kermer, who stopped the clock in 01:19:18 and 01:26:13, respectively, to complete the women's medals. Alessandro Zanga with a time of 01:09:59 and David O'Flaherty, finishing in 01:11:18, took silver and bronze.
The also tough 10 km modality started from Arrecife. In the capital there was also a great atmosphere with a large group of fans and companions. The first to complete the course were Jaume Leiva (00:30:46) and Cherry Fowler (00:40:06), proclaiming themselves just champions. The rest of the podium was completed by Alie Hardie (00:40:09) and Joanne Stanfield (00:41:53) for the women; and Marco Otten (00:31:10) and Tinguaro Quintero (00:32:27), for the men.
We cannot forget Jordi Madera (00:49:34), Joaquín García (00:57:20) and José Marichal Ivanosky (01:02:43) podium of the 21 km in the adapted race wheelers modality, with whom we lived a test with much meaning to coincide with the International Day of persons with disabilities, betting again from the organization for inclusion in sport, as it has been doing in its thirty editions.
The thirtieth edition of the Font Vella Lanzarote International Marathon closed with a decorated trophy ceremony. The organization took the opportunity to thank again all the public institutions and private brands that have made possible that the oldest marathon in the Canary Islands can meet one more edition. Following the day of the event the preparation for the next year 2023 edition have already started. Race will be held on 2nd of December at the same place Costa Teguise, Lanzarote.
