Yeah, The Muppets was supposed to be for families as a whole, so they didn't go full adult-oriented, but only with some winks towards it. You didn't have puppet shows targeting only adults, and as for cartoons, the most you had in the 70s and 80s were cartoons by Ralph Bakshi

I think we need to recognize that there is comedy, and then there's meanness (racism, xenophobia, misogyny, etc). Sometimes comedy is funny, and even people who are a part of the group that is being satirized laugh at it. But, then there are other times when the attempt at comedy goes too far with harmful stereotypes, and it hurts the group being portrayed in the comedy. What's funny is subjective to each individual, unless it's meant to be mean & harmful to a particular group. Some things are downright funny & sometimes things are downright mean & racist. It comes down to a mix of intent of the production, and how much the target of the comedy can accept. I think we can probably agree that Jim Henson Productions & The Muppet Show had no malicious intent against any particular group of people, & the results of their skills, creativity, & writing were then & continue to be funny. But, if at any time they crossed a line, then the target of their comedy has every right to complain. Try to laugh as much as possible everyday. It's good for you.
I've been binge-watching The Muppet Show recently, since I figured something nostalgic and feel-good would help my depression, and while I'm still loving it on the whole (obviously enough to keep binge watching it), it's been more than a little uncomfortable realizing just HOW many more well-meaning-but-culturally-insensitive jokes and songs are in it than I'd remembered. I'd be lying if I said a lot of the scenes in this video and even some that aren't (like the "Pass That Peace Pipe" number in the Liza Minelli episode) didn't put a knot in my stomach when they come on. It's not just recognizing certain jokes that you couldn't get away with any more (comedy is the art of getting away with something, after all) or secondhand offense, I straight-up don't find these moments funny any more. I realize that when you're watching a decidedly raunchy TV show thats now almost half a century old, which itself is grandfathering in songs and gags that are even older, you're inevitably going to see things that don't align with modern values whether you like it or not, but it's hard to shrug off the things that feel decidedly thoughtless towards the feelings of those who've been historically misrepresented by mainstream entertainment, especially when so many have been continually voicing their unhappiness about it and rightfully demanding better for the last decade. It's also just an unfortunate reminder of how much great classic American entertainment, including stuff that's near and dear to me, is rooted in not-so-great history. Still, I don't blame "political correctness" or "easily offended PC babies" for anything. None of this would be considered offensive if so many more people didn't have the opportunity to speak for themselves than they used to, and I think it's great that we live in a time now where there's a much higher expectation from mainstream entertainment to be more respectful of the people who want to be entertained, not to the point that it's so inoffensive that it's boring, obviously, but so we can laugh more at the things that unite us rather than divide us, which I think it what Jim Henson would have wanted.
