Perhaps the younger generation are not so aware of their past. Not surprising as many TH-camrs probably don't know a Britain before 1990.

The British theater scene played on thick accents that they couldn't understand. The scene with the Queen's parade and the pheasant is a throwback to a running gag of Peter fighting a giant chicken, fights that can go on for five minutes.

    • @charlesnathansmith
      @charlesnathansmith ปีที่แล้ว +14

The theater scene is sort of a mash up of a really formal dry British play (obv the U.S. has live theater but we associate this particular type more with Britain) and Punch and Judy where they're just screaming at each other in indecipherable accents.
One's really high brow and the other's really low brow but they're both distinctly British to us

the music that was playing towards the end when they were being chased by the cops and before Peter fell, is the theme music to the Benny Hill show. He was an English comedian who died in 1992, but his show was very popular here in the US.

  • @Pappy_1775

A lot of the jokes you may not have gotten were a "British" take on their regular jokes they do all the time. For instance the slap fight with the giant chicken. That fight is usually to the death with all sorts of blood and mayhem. Or maybe the part where the bobbies chase around Peter and Chris at high speed to the sound of "Yackity Sax" music, is a takeoff of the old British show (which was a hit here in the States) called Benny Hill.

    1. The theater scene was joking about how, though thought of as very cultured by Americans, we can't understand what Brits are saying half the time.
    2. The pheasant and the "...bugger!" scene were just "Britishified" versions of running gags. They were funny because you were supposed to recognize the joke from previous episodes, except it was the "British" version. Extra humor comes from the fact that, in the original version of the joke, the bird is a random giant rooster and the show spends a good ten minutes following their increasingly involved fight as they mercilessly beat each other senseless. The British version has Peter slap-fight a pheasant for a few seconds. "Englishmen are sissies," is the joke.
    3. The tunnel crash scene was an allusion to Princess Diana's death which had a huge impact even in the US. Family Guy humor is often based on "Oh my! I can't believe they referenced that [controversial/revered/sensitive] topic! How witty!" It's lazy, easy, tasteless comedy and one of the reasons I stopped watching.
    4. The teeth thing is a hold-over from earlier times. Over the last few decades, the Brits' dental hygiene has basically caught up to American standards. However, we Americans invented modern dentistry and, up till a few decades back, the difference was pretty noticeable. Of course, we still mock the Dutch for stereotypes going back to colonial times most Americans don't even know the source of, so the teeth joke probably isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

The character, Peter always beats up a chicken randomly every season. So that should be the British version of the chicken that he beats up

Anytime Peter sees a giant bird, they get into a crazy fight. That's why he got into a slap fight with the bird

I once watched a British play and I couldn't understand most of the things they were saying so I think the joke was how the language is incomprehensible to Americans.

There are a lot of running gags in Family Guy that reactors tend to miss because of the lack of context.

The music playing when the cops are chasing them is the theme from the Benny Hill Show.

The joke about the Queen dying in the tunnel was a reference to how Princess Diana died in a tunnel behind harassed by paparazzi.

Pretty sure the way they killed the Queen in the tunnel is referencing the way Princess Diana was killed. So dark, brutal, and brilliant!

Chicken fight, thats a running gag on the show, US version they fight everywhere causing damage everywhere they fight. Griffins chasing the queen , thats a Princess Diana homage to how she died (paparazzi chasing her in France)

The pheasant is a call back to a running joke on the show involving a chicken he fights with.
The joke is only in the comparison.
And the chase to music with the Bobbies after them is the song Yakkety Sax used by Benny Hill for similar chases on the Benny Hill Show.

The police chasing them with the catchy music in the background is from the old Benny Hill shows from the 70’s and 80’s … where Benny would chase and be chased by scantily clad ladies and small old guys to that music . Your welcome
