Just for everyone's information. The first track here is the track that was sampled by Richard D James to create Xtal, it's called Evil at play. It was written by myself, Mary carewe and Don greig for the Chappells music library back in 1986. As you can hear apart from the drums and a change in one beat of the rhythm, Xtal musically is basically what we created, the mood is the same. We're still waiting 30 years later for some recognition that we came up with that tune.

I absolutely respect your initial creation, and I'm thankful that you provided the source material that rdj ended up using creating xtal, which has touched many people's lives. I also understand that the massive difference in appreciation of some people's music vs. others' can be extremely frustrating, and that you feel a need to have your role in the creation of the song recognised. I didn't know where the sample came from, and now that I know, I will help spread that information when it seems fit. but I don't think you can claim that "xtal musically is basically what we created". you created a musical piece which probably inspired rdj ("the mood") and which he ended up using as a central sample in a song of his; but in my opinion, you can't claim that you came up with the tune that is xtal.
@@milkmanswife93696 The only problem is, that it is. The melody and chords are basically lifted from our original recording and the drums added. The 'vibe' of the original is dark, atmospheric, slightly chilling (hence the name 'Evil at play' Yes drums were added but the vocal is the original vocalist, the piano playing is my piano, the chords my chords. I appreciate he's used our music to create something that has touched many people, but he's never recognized where he got that inspiration from in the 20 odd years it's been out there - and it's that that's frustrating. Only now are we in the process of having that recognized by receiving a credit on the writing, which is belatedly appreciated.

The mood is quite different (I never felt that dark/evil vibe in Xtal). And his pads (synths) make a big difference. Claiming that you basically created Xtal just dissolves the respect I had for you when I discovered what the source of the sample was.
@@objav you have to remember, we did write the original melody and chord structure, that is me playing piano on xtal and that is Mary Carewe's voice singing the melody. Our tune, our chords, our playing, her voice but no recognition, no payment, no royalties for 30 years. Richard lifted our track (in full) and used it throughout Xtal. Which is why we have now been given 50% of the writing. I'm also happy he considered our track as a basis for his creativity - but he didn't acknowledge that for 30 years. Using somebody else's music for your own benefit is not morally right, and has always been the problem with sampling and effectively stealing someone else's copyright. Respect him for his work, respect him more if he accepts his inspiration was triggered by somebody else's creativity. By the way, are you saying if I recorded a cover of Let it be and added some drums and synths, I can claim some of the writing? I might try that
