    My trick for placing straps is to wear your favorite bra/bust support and pin the straps of what you're making so that they cover the bra straps. I love the fabric you chose for both projects!

    Oh my these turned out so cute!!! I love the 1930s sleeves on that dress and the pattern placement on the romper is genius. It looks like maybe for the straps you just need to change the angle slightly rather than move them but it's still such a lovely project 💚

      @EngineeringKnits  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you so much! The sleeves are so much puffier than I imagined & they're perfect 😊 I have to fiddle around with the angle of the straps and see how that helps, thank you!

    Regarding the sewing machine needles, in modern needles 120 is for sewing denim or similar weight fabric, 80 is standard and 70 is for finer fabrics. I’m not surprised you were having trouble with holes from a 120 needle on that lovely light cotton!

    • @l.m.2404
      @l.m.2404 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I believe the issue is with the chain stitch that her machine uses and it requires a special groove that allows the thread to form the loop. These types of needles are hard to find.

    As someone who's been sewing for 50+ years, sometimes I still mess up on the yardage. I love the romper, but really like the dress. The stripes look like entredeux, if you don't know what that is , it's an embroidered strip of fabric to bridge between fabric and lace or even pieces of the garment. Well done ❣️

    Chain stitch is so convenient for mockups- the seam ripping is a breeze!

    Everything looks lovely! Bummer about the ropper skirt but if you look at it differently it could be an opportunity. You could make a couple of skirts for it picking up colours from the flowers or a white skirt with appliqué or embroidered flowers. Well done regardless ever maker has misjudged the true amount needed at least once!!

    I have the SAME issue with my long torso, I can’t wear rompers and I always have overalls extended as far as they can go! I also struggle with corsets that aren’t custom made bc my waist to my hips is only like 1/3rd of my torso and my waist to my chest is like 2/3rds

  • @werelemur1138
    @werelemur1138 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My torso is freakishly long. I don't even bother making mock-ups without alteration, just put an extra 3 inches in at the waist at the very beginning.

    I think the strap situation is a vintage/modern thing: all my vintage bras have straps that are very close to each other, usually connected to the bodice directly above the apexes, while shoulder straps on modern garments are generally wider apart.

    oh i love love love the fact that you made the pattern on the fabric for the romper to look like they are coming out from the middle! it looks almost like you have a garden on your body, which is very very lovely!

  • @catherinejustcatherine1778
    @catherinejustcatherine1778 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    They turned out great!
    I love your idea about the flowers. It's a wonderfully inspired creation.
    I would also consider moving the straps out a bit. It gives a more secure & truer -to -your- body shape to the drape & flow of the neckline.
    The square neckline was also a great choice. I love the eyelash trim. That was such a great idea.

  • @vysgiyi
    @vysgiyi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you said you were going to have the flower pattern on the romper going upwards for the top and downwards for t bottoms and sort of meet in the middle….I was super skeptical. And then you came out wearing it and I was so in love. It looks so amazing!! A really good job!!! I have exactly the same issue with rompers, bathing suits, leotards, dresses, and even some skirts. So seeing you being able to adjust it and actually be able to wear something this amazing? Total inspiration moment. I might have to learn to sew just to try and make something half as amazing. Can’t wait for your next video!

    choosing the pattern layout the way you did 100% made that romper absolutely gorgeous. Im now looking through my patterned fabrics to see if I can align them similarly. xxxxx I also have the same issue with wedgies in shorts, low hipped pants, and jumpsuits of any kind. I usually just wind up buying 2-3 sizes bugger and having them be real flowy and loose. Have to make myself more properly fitted ones I think.

    Not sure what the fabric that was left from the rompers looks like. But is there any way to make strips/panels to get the width you need? Some french seams wouldn't be out of place in piecing a skirt. The other thought is to make the over-skirt out of white and applique on some of the flowers from the romper fabric. Say a border around the hem and up the front. Because if I remember correctly it is an open-front skirt.

    • @michellebyrom6551
      @michellebyrom6551 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I had similar thoughts. Seams in gathered skirts are naturally half hidden. If you cut the piece wider for the extra seam it will fit the same. As a buttoned front, one panel cut in half and used at the front would put seams in the right place for the pattern and look planned. That's if you have enough fabric to join this way.
      Lovely garments as always, and that floral fabric is gorgeous.

    Oh boy can I relate to not fitting in rompers! In my case, I have a short waist but very elongated hips, and the biggest problem is that my waist is lower in the front than in the back. Easy to adjust for when sewing, but does really weird things to off the rack stuff

    What specific needles do wilcox and gibbs chainstitchers use? Or rather, whats the closest modern equivalent? I have a singer 12 and can only use it with DBx1 size industrial needles since its close enough to the original 12x1 needles, unlike the modern universal 15x1 needles every modern sewing machine uses.

    What do you do with the fabric in the mock up...it seems like a waste of fabric

    • @brigidscaldron
      @brigidscaldron 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      A lot of sewists use mock ups as a liner of garments, or especially if it’s a large piece for example, a large skirt panel, you can reuse that for other mock ups in the future.
      Otherwise, you can cut them up into rags, handkerchiefs, cabbage/stuffing for padded items (rump/hip pads for historical sewing, or pillows, etc.)

    • @jjudy5869

      And/or background fabric for quilt blocks. It's not thrown away.

    • @KMFerguson
      @KMFerguson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      As much as it seems like a waste of fabric, making the project without a mockup would result in more frustration and ill fitting garments that won't be worn. I've made garments from patterns without mockups because the pattern notes indicated it would be the right size, but the right size isn't always the best fit. Project fabric is more expensive then muslin, and it's hard to get more and replace pieces that are too small if the fabric is patterned.

    • @l.m.2404
      @l.m.2404 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Mock up fabric doesn't have to be anything special, old bed sheets, pillow cases, tablecloths, etc. I always end up using it in other projects.
