      DA:O was a great gaming experience back in its time 14 years ago. I had a lot of fun maxing my character, good speech choices/paths, and using the pausing combat strategy. Baldur's Gate 3 is quite amazing and I could make an even more badass demonesque character but I still can't really get myself to enjoy the turn base strategy although I know that is integral part of D&D just like the dice rolls. Gets tiresome when a battle consists of ten to fifteen enemies.

      I always interpreted it as him checking if we succeeded at our task(In heat of battle he doesn't look around for the signal, he is just waiting for reinforcement to join any minute). But at his final moment he looks at the tower to confirm we have succeeded - he does that out of worry for us, but mostly for Alistair. He says he didn't do it to protect us but he actually did, he didn't want new blood to possibly die that night. Even if the victory seemed so "easy" in King's eyes. I think it was actually relief and hope in Duncan's final moments, that Alistair has a chance to survive(obviously not knowing we were also betrayed and then swarmed - cause Loghain was gonna sabotage the tower regardless of who goes). Either way Duncan was sweet and it sucks we didn't get Alistair DLC that would let us play his origin, his joining and few months before he met us - would be great opportunity to know him better and learn about Duncan and how the order was before the fall in Ferelden
      Duncan thinking about reinforecements not coming despite the signal are kind of far fetched - don't mean to be rude. He only checks the tower as he is about to die, so he does not know how long it has been lit(and from narrative point of view it seems the tower was just lit, hard to deduce the timing here but it is likely loghain wouldn't save Cailan anyways, although they could have recovered his body and save Duncan - who btw is yet missing in terms of his body, many speculate darkspawn do things to Grey Wardens, maybe somehow keep them alive and corrupt them, if there is anything to it then DA4 should have it. Architect used Grey WArdens for his experiments but i think he would mention Duncan or Ostagar at all so either it was some other magister or Duncan missing body has some meaning to it, especially since darkspaw have enough brain to understand who Cailan was and to corrupt his body)

    • @Shifft-This
      @Shifft-This ปีที่แล้ว +126

      I agree with this. While I still liked DA:2 I felt them turning it into more of an action game and not giving it a very satisfying ending (too many loose plot threads) really left it feeling... not as complete as the original Dragon Age. The same issue except even worse for Inquisition. I've now written away the franchise. I really don't think the series can get back what it lost. Thankfully games like Baldur's Gate 3 are coming out and beating it at it's own game by... returning to the roots of what it was trying to be. BG3 is more like Dragon Age than DA:2 and DA: Inquisition combined.

    • @RockoEstalon
      @RockoEstalon ปีที่แล้ว +65

      @@Shifft-This
      I liked both DA:2 and DA:I but I just see them as a spin-off series or sorts. Even with the games losing more and more RPG elements to me they don't feel like proper sequels in a general sense.
      First off, no sense of progression. Some things do carry over (elves opression, mage rebellion) but the main thing regardind the Darkspawn and the ancient Gods it's not touched upon until Dragon Age 3, and by then you're playing with a brand new character unrelated to both the one from the first game and Hawke. That takes weight away since it doens't feel like a big adventure in the vein of Mass Effect where you're Shepard all the time, or the first two Baldur's Gate games where you are the bhaalspawn until the last expasion. It's worse when you take into account that Hawke and Inquisitor just meet each other for 5 minutes and neither of them ever meets the Hero of Ferelden (assuming the hero survived the encounter with the Archdemon).
      Secondly, Origins aesthetic was dirty, gory, bleak and kinda erotic. The two sequels are so clean and sanitized that it's not funny. You do get some bloody bits here and there but they're sparce, and a good deal of the time they feel out of place because the rest of the game is too kid-friendly. That's specially agravating when you take into account the both sequels have darkers themes than the first one, yet they shy away from adressing them properly.
      tl;dr: Gameplay aside, changes in tone and aesthetic make the whole series feel disconeted.

    I just replayed DAO and was struck by how fantastic the role playing is. The lack of a voice protagonist and the dialogue options just make it so much better than the later games in that regard. @OneTrueNobody ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@Piketom1 Honestly, I think the overall brown-ness undermines an aspect of the Blight. The darkspawn taint is supposed to slowly corrupt and taint as it progresses. If the world were a bit more vibrant, they could have played with that a little, shown portions of Lothering getting a bit withered, perhaps, or made parts of the game look bleaker the further into the main quest you were when you got there. I'm not saying go full bright-and-cheerful with it, but I think using contrast between brighter and bleaker tones can accomplish a bleaker overall feeling than just... pure bleakness.
      The Korcari Wilds are probably the only location they did something like this with, and in that only between games-there's a fair amount of plant life there in DA:O, but when Hawke's family is fleeing through it in DA2, it's an absolute wasteland.

      @@michaelh878 I'll disagree on that, but I also disliked Dragon Age's shift to a more "videogamey" stat system even back at the time. To be fair, I also kind of dislike that aspect of the Divinity: Original Sin games, even though the action point system reminds me of Fallout.
      The sticking point for me is that the Baldur's Gate games, whether real-time-with-pause or turn-based, have a tabletop ruleset to them that is designed to be comprehended mathematically by the people playing them, whereas with Dragon Age, even at its best, the most I could hope to really figure in my head was, "Aaaaaah, um... high damage GOOD, city elf SMASH!" There was enough tactical depth to offset that, but I'm not looking at my equipment and immediately understanding the significance of every point difference the way I would in KotOR, Baldur's Gate, or Neverwinter Nights.
      And to compensate for that, some aspects of the combat system are geared to be kind of brainless. Not nearly as brainless as Dragon Age would become in its sequels, but... kinda brainless, even so.
      I'm not saying they should have cloned D&D again, but I would definitely have preferred a system that wasn't quite so numerically opaque. We have JRPGs for that kind of thing.

    DA: Origins really is such a special game even nowadays, it's honestly a shame that the series never quite took off in quite the same way that Mass Effect did. As much as I do enjoy DA 2, it certainly isn't as great as Origins was overall and Inquisition while being a huge upgrade in terms of scale, at times feels more shallow, plus there's an atmosphere in Origins that none of the other games really could capture again. One of the fun things about Dragon Age: Origins is that the specific race and origin combination you pick can also affect your starting skills with the class you pick. For instance, a City Elf will always begin with a bit of dual-wielding in their starting loadout; a Dalish Elf with a bit of archery; and a human with a bit of sword-and-board, as both warrior and rogue. So your Origin has an impact on your starting build, not just the story you play. My first character was a City Elf Warrior and since she started as a dual-wielder, I kept her as one, and she turned into the most OBNOXIOUS skill-spamming heavy-armored sweeper tank. Just gathering all the enemies to her and unleashing with those wide-area double sword attacks.
    Started Awakening buck naked and without weapons though, because of the way the save import borked the DLC equipment, which also happened to be the best stuff for the Origins endgame. Whoopsie-doodle.
    I miss the kind of build flexibility Origins let you experiment with. DA2 and Inquisition both had really rigid build limitations, such a dual-wielding being daggers-rogue-only, archery being purely a rogue thing too, warriors being nothing but melee or melee-plus-shields, and so on.

      The story is pretty great but the game is much harder than you'd expect. You get to make pretty significant choices and your traveling companions have a good excuse to travel with you during the adventures. The fantasy elements are generic enough but have a twist to them. Such as dragons being godlike creatures and mages are always a few steps away from being tempted by demons.

    It's insane that despite after more than a decade since I've last played Dragon Age: Origins I still remember story as if it was yesterday. Baldur's Gate 3 has managed to surpass DA:O for me and become my new favorite game. But this just shows how great DA:O was at it's time and how high the bar was set. Kudos to Larian on delivering 3x of the greatest cRPGs ever made and honoring old school Bioware. I just wish EA and current Bioware would look up to BG3 to make Dragon Age 4 like a modernised DA:O

      Inquisition's the worst of each of Bioware's main two intellectual properties imo (Excluding Andromeda which I have not even touched), I can not remotely concur with the often spouted idea it is one of the greatest videogames of all time.
      Mass Effect 3's woeful quest design of barely getting to interact with NPCs beyond a binary choice at the end of a fetch quest to the Galaxy Map and the Citadel was held up by having superb conclusions to larger narrative arcs and a handful of real missions.
      For me Inquisition went in on that quest design and then some, tedious crafting and inflated resource collection on an oversized map come to mind as one example, another being the combat itself being so drawn out by artificial number bloat especially during the DLC areas. Whilsts restricting you to only a pitiful six skills at a time and no attribute distribution, it clearly does not respect my limited time, clocking in at two to three hundred hours when finished.
      It's an okay experience the first time around but just because I like Thedas and have a prior history with Dragon Age, even with the most shallow characters (aside from a handful of characters, just Dorian if I am being completely real) and plot to date... most infuriating of all for a role playing game, you do not get to do an awful lot of role playing. The Inquisitor offers neither the depth of The Champion or breadth of The Warden. It is a story where you are at the center of a world shaking story with no meaningful consequential autonomy, best exemplified in Trespasser, as you are locked in to being in awe of Solas.
      Finally I really really wish the Art Nouveau inspiration worked anywhere near as well in the world itself as it did on the Tarot Cards. Clothing in general looks largely pretty awful. Just look at old Bann Teagan. And The Darkspawn design still does not work.
      I am glad Trevor Morris will not be returning for Dreadwolf either, I found his take on Dragon Age supremely dull in comparison to Inon Zur, it's just mediocrity incarnate, it's total white noise.
      I find the videogame largely immature and shallow, as an example the inclusion of a transgender character although somewhat respectful's tainted with the complete inability to role play your Inquisitor as already understanding the situation, they get to be ignorant at the best.
      I absolutely loathe Inquisition, to me, it honestly borderline did nothing right. Any influence it has had on the industry's a negative one and it's success lead to many more failures for Bioware ultimately. They outright have said since they wanted it to fail so that they could cut their crunch practices, and being pushed by Electronic Arts to make videogames for that fabled "wider audience" and unfortunately they succeeded. That's what a rant from me looks like. (My apologies for the candor of this comment, but it is indeed how I feel about the entry.)

    I loved Baldur's Gate 3 but I think DA: Inquisition will always remain my favourite ARPG. While the characters in both games are both fantastically rich and creative in equal measure, my character having a voice in all cutscenes and parts of the game made him feel like part of the world rather than just a flexible self insert of myself. More over I would say that the story was a little bit more creative than the one in bg3. While still fantastic, it ultimately did sort of come down to collect the infinity stones (netherstones) and defeat Thanos (the absolute). There were similar elements in DA:I but they were a bit more nuanced and I loved the way they were tied with the companions you'd spent the game playing with. I could counter that with the fact that on multiple occasions rolling a melee character in DA:I made me want to blow my brains out (looking at you descent expansion final boss). No complaints however, just fond reminiscing. I hope the world continues to bless me with these wonderful experiences of storytelling

    Yea....wow... DA:O is still such an amazing game. That was really peak bioware right there.
    So much content and such good writing. Very good graphics and mo-cap for the time.
    Admittedly, some gameplay mechanics have aged a little, but it's still perfectly serviceable.
    They opted for a more action oriented approach with DA2 (also hoping to sell more on console) because 'kids like action games more now'
    It failed.
    And looking at Bg3 now, a turn based crpg, doing so well - it shows that people are willing to adopt the more classical approach to these rpgs as long as the game is solid. And bg3 and DA:O are f-ing solid.

    If you recruit Loghain you get to see his side of the story. He thought the battle of Ostagar couldn't be won, but Cailan wouldn't listen to reason because he wanted a glorious victory. So not only all his men would die, but there also wouldn't be anyone left to defend Ferelden from Orlais, the neighbouring country. I like this because no one can say for sure if he was right or wrong, he just did what he thought was tight.

    • @blissfulrain
      @blissfulrain 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I can! He was wrong lol Loghain let his fear of Orlais almost destroy Fereldan beyond recovery. It goes past the battle of Ostagar cause he never changes direction when it becomes more than obvious a blight is at hand. Instead all of his actions result in weakening Fereldan in a time of extreme emergency. Just thinking about the threat levels tells he made the wrong call. You Fereldan from invasion but you can't recover it from a blight as it corrupts and poisons even the land and animals.

      2000 to 2010 were basically the golden age of modern gaming. Every AAA company was hitting home runs left and right so stuff like DAO didn't really get to shine.
      Then after 2010 the RPG genre took a massive nosedive. Once the market flooded with absolute garbage the value of all those 2000s era RPGs ballooned to the top of the quality spectrum. DAO in particular has been helped along by it's really unique setting and themes.
