    Twilight actually isn't that bad, but the biggest problem is that it focuses on Jacob, Bella and Edward, who are all rather bland, as opposed to more interesting characters like Alice, Rosalie, Carlisle, Leah and even Charlie.

      Yeah… imprinting concept… like ALL of it, not even JUST Jacob and Renessme (which is certainly THEE worst, lmao), but the way it took agency away from EVERYONE involved, least of all the folks imprinted on…
      BIG yikes across the board. Then throw in Edward’s casual stalking.

      YOU never did, doesn't mean everyone understands that difference between reality and fantasy. Shows and midia really influences how people view the world, specially when they're young and impressionable. Some people will be able to differentiate and will be less impressionable (usually when they have good parents that talk about stuff and don't let midia be the only thing teaching their kids about the world), but some people won't be able to and will be more impressionable and guide themselves through it.

    Personally, I don’t have much beef with Twilight. At one point I think I had pretty strong feelings about it romanticizing toxicity and possibly abuse, but as a writer myself I eventually realized that a wholesome, healthy, realistic relationship would not be much fun to write about or read about. I think the biggest problem we have in terms of shows, books, and movies portraying these harmful and potentially toxic things is when it's targeted at a vulnerable audience and there's not much in terms of alternatives to show what relationships could look like in real life. I think we need to find ways to demonstrate for teens what relationships should look like in real life so that they can consume this media without it becoming a factor that establishes how they view romantic relationships in real life for years to come. I'm also not going to fuss over the age gap in a vampire romance, because that's what you go into a vampire romance expecting but also because a vampire is not something you can be in real life. It's dangerous that some teens started hoping for a teacher to date them during PLL because a teacher is something someone in their life could actually be and the statistics on teacher/student SA as absolutely staggering. That was irresponsible. But I think even the most under-privileged of teenagers know vampires don’t exist.

    I agree wholeheartedly with so much of what you said :-) but I have to defend the actors here just a little bit. Not because they’re acting was good, it was awful! But that’s not entirely their fault. We know from other projects that these actors can do well, we have to remember that there is a Director telling them what to do and how to act in order to portray these roles. So let’s laugh at these scenes and how ridiculous these actors are acting, but remember that we should also be laughing at the Director, and what they allowed to not only get caught on film, but make it past the editing process🤣

    as a teenager in the US when the first movie came out, the reception and media coverage really impacted how i felt about the series. I had read the books before the movie came out and knew it was a YA novel, so when was seeing on the news THOUSANDS of grown women going absolutely feral for the two male leads...i was no longer interested lol . I was also able to see the weird, questionable, problematic stuff while it was happening since i was not attached to it.

    I don’t have time to watch this right now, but I did want to share my opinion on Twilight real quick.
    I love Twilight. The books, specifically. I like the story, the characters, the world building, even the love. Despite this love, there are problems with it. On a craft level, there are a number of changes that could have been made to make it better. There’s also the whole Native American thing. (I don’t think the common complaint of an age gap in vampire romances is super fair. Their bodies are stuck in time and so is their brain chemistry.)
    What I’m saying is, it’s ok to like things that are kinda bad.

    in the book theres a lot of comedic moments yes twilight is trying to be funny on purpose( also wanted to add that edward states many times in the series if Bella didnt want to be with him and didnt want him in her life, he would leave because he just wants her to be happy, he'd be happy knowing she was living a good life without him, example: rewatch the tent scene from Eclipse)

    I think they work better as movies then books. i cant stand all the internal dialog she uses to tell this story. i wish she wasnt pushed to make more books and add jacob and everything that comes with his character. I think if she was allowed to do twilight as is. then write breaking dawn her first version. no Jacob love triangle. no Jacob and renesme however you spell her name. none of that. im sure the vamp baby was gonna be a thing and maybe this book wouldve been more from theyre daughters point of view getting used to the supernatural world as a unique being. that book sounds interesting to me but, we have what we have and i hope. we update cannon in the show. i hope we add more mythical underworld elements and maybe a new cliff hanger to bring in a phase 2?

    My problem is that I'm subscribed to a channel called "Cinema Therapy" which i highly recommend you watch, or everyone. They did Videos on all 4 movies. And i remember watching it with a college from my Training, she's a few years younger than me. And i GENUINELY argued with her bc she was honesty like "bute he hot, it's love" and im like he literally tells her I'm a huge red flag, I've killed ppl, as if you could escape me, you're the Lamb I'm the Lion etc." And im like "Yuck, that's obsessive. And she's like "okay, i don't care." Yeah maybe they're good trash movies to watch but like i said, this actually does something to ppl. Bc that's why ppl think, "I can fix him." NO YOU CAN'T. I just can't. Maybe I'm taking it too seriously. But they(the movies just annoy me now that I'm older. But obviously some ppl don't growbout of this. So to answer your question: Yes i grew out of it, i think we all should see that this is actually unhealthy, obviously you do you. Watch it as a trash movie whatever, its just ew for me. I just think making this into a reboot and teaching this to young girls again is bad.

    The summer before the first movie came out my mom and I went on a cross country road trip to visit a ton of the locations in the books. I adored the series. I made shirts with my friends and went to the midnight showing of Twilight. When it was over I was overcome with disappointment. I legit felt like I had watched a parody of my favorite book. I never felt the same about the books again, this movie single handedly killed it for me lol.

    I read the book as an adult, but I can imagine the questionable relationship of the main characters could have some negative effects on a kids view of relationships. The main thing that bothered me was the racism. Maybe it was because I had already read an article about the author’s world building and how she didn’t want a diverse cast because “vampires would be pale and white.” It apparently was a compromise to have the one black cast member be a main villain. The language of the native tribe left me with an icky feeling, for lack of a better word. On a positive note, though, I think the first movie did really well considering their low budget.

    • @KovacsZoltan12
      @KovacsZoltan12 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      there was absolutely no need for diverse casting, not everything should be about "races", there were native americans, diverse students, nothing wrong with that.

    • @lindseystein9676
      @lindseystein9676 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      More than only white people audition for movies and such. Casting directors have to go out of their way to turn down people of colour auditioning. That’s wrong in my opinion. I’m not referring to the main characters where the author talks about how pale and white they are. From what it sounded like, they were auditioning and the author didn’t even want background/supporting characters (who didn’t have race mentioned already in the book) to acted by people of colour. She even apparently justified that by claiming black people would “turn pale” after becoming a vampire. It just sounded all around bizarre. The author has said a lot of questionable things about race in her books and just in general.

And as I got to know the other characters and rewatched them now in my twenties I was like this is hilarious and unsettling-Jasper deserved better, Carlisle is the man we all wanted and Edward is a stalker lol

  • @eventingirl001

    I think we have outgrown the "high school vampire" trope. The teen girl bait movies are great fun whether they were based on a YA novel or not (the Convenant was another movie teen girls loved to watch!) I was excited about the remake because I wanted to actually see some consistency in production and tone of the remake. Catherine Hardwicke is a terrible director unfortunately and she really leaned into the teenager/MTV aspect of the early 2000's/2010's. Everything is so terribly written, not just the movies but the books as well; I am quite glad Stephanie Meyer hasn't written anything for quite some time. I thought that the twilight remake was going to actually be an animation now but I was hoping that instead of having the character in high school, age the characters up to college! They can stay in school for years earning a few credits at a time and have 6 years max to age themselves up and make themselves look older. The other members of the family have such interesting backstories that could be hinted at or fleshed out through what they're learning or doing in college! Charlie could still be a Sheriff and Bella could go home to Forks on the weekend while the Cullens live in Seattle. Let's give the secondary characters some agency and life outside of just the main love triangle. I would hope that the writers would lean a little more into those more adult story lines or address those toxic story points and fix them for 2024; the lack of BIPOC characters, Imprinting etc.

    I love twilight I miss it and I want to move to the town I disagree with you. I’ve seen worse acting after is so much worse God I just wish I never watched it, but I can’t. I hate that movie so much how much I hate it will never watch again. They ruined a perfect book but I absolutely love twilight. Ignore all bad stuff look. For what it is i love it for what it is a film of love and teen movies it’s amazing to me I want them to bring it back

    I remember my Japanese roommate in Uni had a copy in her own language and it was then that I realized how popular the whole series was! 😮
    And they like worship white skin over there so I guarantee the movies were also a hit too!
