My sister would sometimes make tapioca pudding from the large or small pearls of tapioca , which had to be boiled for a long time in order to soften the tapioca pearls . It tasted great !
My stepfatther would sometimes make creamed chipped beef on toast ( S.O.S. - SH*T ON A SHINGLE ) on weekends . I LOVED IT !!! Sometimes he would make sausage gravy on toast when we didn't have dried beef .
As a kid growing up in the 50's and 60's , we would sometimes make "SOGGY TOAST" . "SOGGY TOAST" is made by spreading an excessive amount of butter on bread and putting it into a broiler oven for a few minutes . We had to watch it closely as it could burn very easily . The result was buttery toasted bread that we would put jam , jelly , or apple butter on . YUM !
x We used to have chipped beef at the assisted living I worked at, it tasted great! x I had potato pancakes at a German cafe one time, it was amazing! x We have had corned beef hash, bean soup, and potato soup in my immediate family a lot of times!
I'm 59 and I've heard my parents and grandparents talking about eating foods like this during the depression era and i have made my own versions of some of these meals in between paydays and as always thanks for the delicious food memories.🇺🇲🫓🍲🥗🥘🍰🇺🇲
Your Bubbie would use matzo meal, and make them for Hanukah. Milk toast was also something you are when you were feeling poorly. Wacky Cake is the same as Depression Cake
Have you had a Bubble and squeak sandwich fry leftover veggies put on bread add on a sausage or a hot dog cut longways place other slice of bread on top and with a squeezy bottle of mustard or tomato sauce draw a picture of a pussycat on top of the sandwich make ya start purring 😂😂😂😂
if you're going to put up a collage of food recipes at least use images of the food. here we see unrelatd images of different tood when talking about a specific recepie. exp corn meal mush...last time i looked mush wasnt something you can slice into bars and fry...but we see it done here. wtf make it make sense.
I always think of the Great Depression as a culinary experience leading to the great fashion and popular music of those nostalgic World War II years.
LOL. Someone's sarcasm detector needs new batteries.
Love the pictures of certain 20th century German figures used a couple times for Americans living through the depression.

@@TheGoldenAgeofAmerica I actually fried milk toast last night, it was excellent!
Potato pancakes are one of dishes that always has been and staying popular and are nothing to do with great depression
And claiming bean soup was invented in Idaho? 😂
We still eat Brunswick stew in the South. It does not contain squirrel. It is made with beef and chicken.

Thank you for your comment
Maybe not mush. But with less water or refrigeration you can slice it and fry it up. It’s quite tasty too.
SOS featured twice?
Thank you I will pay more attention to
Whoever edited this video did a crap job. I'd love to know why one of the photos shown is Adolph Hitler. It's right after the pic of Roosevelt.
