Slow blinks are a great way to reassure a nervous cat .Some people call it the feline "I love you " ,I think of it more as the "It's ok ,i'm a friend " signal .Either way a cat will understand the message and know that you don't want to hurt them .Getting down to their level also helps .If a cat is sitting on the floor ,you sit on the floor (Not too close ) it makes you seem less threatening .Finally ,not looking at the cat at all can be a help .Just being there ,doing something quiet like reading ,but not bothering the cat ,will show the cat that it's safe to share space with you .

Both of my boys are both painfully loving, and super scared in very different ways. One is super afraid when a stranger comes into the house, but super sweet when at the vet. My other one is super sweet with company, but cowers incredibly when he is at the vet. Kitties are so different, and great!

One of my cats, Miss Midnight the Feral Queen of the Office has her own house, a large Amazon box, in the far corner of the office. She is VERY confident with me. Sometimes, she looks at me and if I stretch my hand out to her, she'll approach for some attention, almost as if she is asking if it is a good time for it. She sleeps on a cat bed...in the MIDDLE of the office! I can walk right up to her and touch her. She will sit nearby me with her back turned towards me (that means trust). However, she is still feral, so if someone else comes in, off into her house she goes!

We took in two waifs about three years ago. They had been rescued from a rubbish tip where their mother and siblings had died. Both black: Cattacomb (a scaredy boy who hides a lot) and Cattagoric a very bossy girl. Cattagoric was asleep behind my computer while I was watching a war movie with lots of bangs and bombs that did not disturb her at all. Then I switched to a British news channel and there was an item about Queen Elizabeth opening a new museum in a castle in Scotland. As soon as the bagpipes began to skirl in the Queen's honour, Cattagoric shot up yowling with fur and tail bushed out. She disappeared for two hours. Definitely not a Scottish Nationalist.

Yup it’s official. Here I am looking for answers as to why my cat is so shy and here’s a fat white guy talking about politics.

I don't force the approach because I know humans may look imposing to them, and they need space. They eventually warm up to me and come. They can be such cuddle bugs once you win their trust, hahaa. Shy ones don't like much being petted brutishly though, you have to take a move gently.

This was very good and informative. Can you extend the discussion a little bit? My cat turned nine years old last month. He has always been an indoor cat; I am his only human and we have bonded well over the years. He is very possessive of his human and, therefore, jealous of the laptop and the telephone. If I am on either one of them, he wants to assert his ownership of me and will do anything it takes to get rid of the appliance and yield my lap, time and attention to him. So this is his house and everything in it is his including the human.
The problem comes when guests arrive. That is when he becomes skittish and insecure. Usually, he will run upstairs or just to the first landing and keep and eye on things from there. But on occasion, he has come into a room adjacent to the gathering, sat on the carpet and glared at everyone waiting to have his house back. If anyone offers a hand or even a nice comment, he uses bad language and goes back upstairs. Unless I spray my guests down with catnip, I don't know how I could make him more sociable.
Part of the problem also is that he has a minor bowel disease. All that he can have to eat is his prescription cat food. Even that has to be in measured proportions. So he cannot have treats. As a kitten, he loved everybody. Now, it's only his human. He is a reasonably healthy and very spoiled cat. The vet may have treated adult bobcats that were more compliant.

One of mine, Sampson has gotten shy scary after surgery. He wasn’t before. The last one to get it. I don’t know why. Maybe because I have grabbed him from the outside and threw him into the house with all his siblings. It’s been almost a month though. He gets scary when brothers run up on him playing. He’ll start squealing. He has a very high pitched growl and meow. Almost like Donald Duck. He was also the one that was bitten 3 times by the diamondback. Starting to think the venom fried his brain. Was to late for anti venom. I’ll keep trying giving up is not an option.

I have a very shy cat. My kitten, now 2 years old, has become shy. I am wondering how normal this is. My older cat, who is now 12 years old, seems to have taught the 2 year old to be quite shy. They both only associate with 2 of my friends. The young one used to greet everyone. Is this odd, or is it something that i don't need to worry about?

Help! We adopted a week ago an extremely timid 5 year old girl cat. We have put her in a spare room with food, water, litter box and a new bed. I have padded some shelves, put out toys and I am feeding her wet food twice a day. She has been hiding behind the bed. During this week we have seen some small advances ie: she’s not darting so quickly behind the bed when we come in, she’s coming out to eat while we are in the room but if any sudden moves from us she goes behind the bed again. Last night when I went in to close the blinds she hissed at me when she was running for the bed.
Is this all normal? Is there anything else I should be doing? It’s obvious she’s had a rough time of it and no matter what we would never take her back to the shelter but I want her life to be better.
