It's at places like New York Comic Con, where we meet up with retailers and collectors who scour the internet to curate new discoveries from emerging toy artists. Benny Kline of Tenacious Toys walks us through some of his favorite new art toys this year, and explains how artists get their break to stand out among collectors.

Based on how many comments so far are confused about these being called 'Toys', you guys should do a little video talking about what designer toys actually are. As a sculptor who makes her own resin 'toys', it can be really cumbersome and difficult to properly explain to people what this world actually is. Ive talked about this to other designer toy artits and it really is frustrating that this world doesnt have a better name lol 'Urban Vinyl' '3D Collectible Art' ..Designer toys is so misleading but its the best we've got so far!

@@Fuzzycat16 Lol I mean I didnt label this massive culture myself. I think because this world originally started with actual toys and still pulls a lot of inspiration from the toy world. There are a lot of different types of 'art toys' and some are more clearly connected to the world of action figures, while others are 100% new designs that are more like collectible figurines. Here is a wiki link if you want to look into it a bit more. Im not about to copy and paste it all to explain, but this world is tied to underground music and graffiti culture as well..

How about the word 'ornament'? It sits there and looks nice, you don't play with it, not like a child with their actual toys. So it's an ornament. You make ornaments.
@@BazookaJRambo Hah Yeah I can see what you mean but I think that would be just as confusing. I know a fair amount of the population would assume the word 'ornament' means it hangs on a tree and thats it. Its a word used almost exclusively for that.
Again..I dont have sway over what the industry is called and im not sure how you could even go about that at this point. Its just a name. If its THAT difficult to get past the fact that 'toy' is in the name then move on to something else. If you looked any deeper than the surface of this world, you wouldnt care what the name was, you would just start collecting cool shit. BUT it would be nice if the name didnt slightly mislead people.
What can you do except spread accurate info about what this world is..which is why I left the original comment. Tested has a platform to inform people about cool niche worlds of creators making stuff, so why not make an informative video on the world overall/its history (maybe they have discussed it and I missed it). They dont have to of course. Im grateful they make as many videos out designer toys as they do.

Wish I was able to pull everything out of the case for them but me and Norm yakked for too long as it was. I can't believe they gave me this much screen time! HAHAHA

I recently discovered vinyl toys as well from an interview I did with Xelephant. I think he will b e a great vinyl toy artist.

Great video Norm and fun to see what Tenacious Toys is doing! With DesignerCon coming up this is still getting me pumped to see what shows up there. I went and learned how to Cast my own using SmoothOn products in hopes of just starting out...not sure what people want to call them either. Toys, Sculpts, etc. I find they are more sculpts of course but end up calling/tagging them "designer toys" because that is the term that people are using and most likely to find them from me.

I think it's important to note that he refers to these (in the title) as "designer toys" -- which for the most part means statues. Small, unmoving statues. These are works of art. A toy is something you can pick up, play with as in move, make gun sounds, play war, whatever. I only point this out because a LOT is being done in the "actual" toy world, with amazing engineering, etc, but with a fraction of the cost of anything called "designer." So, if you want something that looks amazing on your shelf, go for one of these. It's definitely good art! But, if you want a collection of toys you can actually afford, go with some gunpla, some knock off weird transformers, heck even the Marvel Rising dolls! There's so much out there that looks cool without paying $300 for a 7-inch piece.
Beau Hindman nobody thinks these toys are the only option if they want something to play with. People don't buy these toys to play with in the first place. So your comment is completely unnecessary.
This is all true but also keep in mind that not all designer toys have a high price tag. As he stated in the video, there are many artists of all levels creating 'designer toys'. There are TONS of really cool pieces in every kind of style at very affordable prices. Which honestly, they probably shouldnt be so affordable for the insane amount of work that goes into every sculpt, every mold, cast, painted edition etc. The wide range of ways that artists can get these produced, whether its factory produced vinyl or home casted resin, is what creates this WIDE range of prices so that anyone can start a collection. As artists get more popular and the demand increases, they can begin to raise prices accordingly so FOR ONCE in their lives they can make an actual profit. A lot of bigger artists sell items on all tiers, from one of a kind sculpts for hundreds of dollars to small factory made blind box vinyl, small blank resin pieces or pins/tshirts. This isnt a world that excludes people with a smaller wallet. Maybe just dont look at the top names in designer toys..start poking around at the indie artists, go to shows like DesignerCon and Five Points Fest. See and meet these cool artists yourself and buy a $30 limited piece of art. :)

I had some “designer toys” for sale there priced at $12, $15 and $20 each. Tarbus the Tardigrade was $20 and glows in the dark
I used to play with star wars toys. I am new to art designer toys. This stuff is massively nerdy. Kind of where cool meets nerd. But honestly, I don't get these toys that much. I think what is missing is the animated element. Without the story, music, character voicing/personas, and animation, these toys lack life force power. And because of that, they will never be a break out pop success like Miraculous Lady Bug which is ultra cheesy but still. Huge success.
I got some pieces from T.T. Really happy with them. They have lots of great stuff. 😎😎😎

These aren't so much toys as another outlet for artists. Toys are for play with the expectation that a large percentage will be destroyed by their intended audience. That's what makes a toy collectible: 80% of kids had one, 20% survived childhood, 10% want to own another one as an adult. That 10% is willing to pay a premium to get an undamaged toy that they loved to death as a kid.
This is no different than art where you are buying them and are counting on scarcity to have something that more people want than can acquire at retail price. These artists could eventually find a job designing toys with existing IP, or come up with something that turns into a full fledged toy with a backstory and mass market appeal. The mass market toys need other media to promote them because the shows and movies are intended to show kids how to play with the toys and set up the universe that they can invent their own stories in.
A balloon dog has no mass market appeal or any sort of story for a kid to recreate and expand on that their friends have any shared experience with. It's really unfortunate that ignorant nannies killed kid's television shows because it completely killed creative play in the process. Kids cartoons today on network TV are just reality shows for kids which stomps all over creativity which is far more important in young developing minds.

Norm, you should totally check out www.onelldesign.com and their Glyos System line. You wanna talk about having your finger on the pulse, Glyos is the way to go. I learned so much and met so many behind the scenes guys just from collecting this series.
