The hair is actually a wig. Reverend Mother Dolores had her longer hair trimmed for her role in the following year's "Lisa," 1962. She still had the longer hair in 1961's comedy, "Sail a Crooked Ship," her follow-up to "Francis of Assisi."

I read her book. It talks about how she spends her days watching TV, working with the theater and singlehandedly doing all the jobs necessary. No mention of prayers or charitable acts, and I really got tired reading about "I did this", "I got this because of my connections" and how the nuns let her receive and answer fan mail after she joined the order.

Everything men and women do in religious life serves a purpose, symbolically or otherwise. In the movie, no one was forcing her to become a nun. In fact she had to literally run away from home to become one. If a man or woman cannot accept all the big and little sacrifices and disciplines a religious life requires , its a very good sign that he/she was NOT meant for religious life.It also requires many years to become a nun, priest , brother,or monk.Plenty of time to figure out whether one has made the right choice. Its not for everybody- nor was it ever meant to be.

"You have no right in here; this is the house of God". That is one of the worst lines ever written for a religiously-themed movie. The house of God is open to ALL and anyone has the right to be inside. Some of us even remember a day in the USA when three priests (the older, about to retire one; the mid-life one; the young one) served a parish along with a deacon and a seminarian. Churches were open 24-7-365 for prayer and meditation. A priest was available to hear confessions when a penitent walked into the sanctuary, not on a scheduled day for a few hours.

You missed the significance of the moment. Clare was entering a cloistered monastic community which was off limits to anyone except monks and nuns. The ceremony took place with in the chapel of the monastic community. Obviously the parish church is open to everyone, but not the chapel of a cloistered monastic community.

Anyways it was highly unlikely for a woman to have that short hair that can't be cut at those times. Women were expected to have long hair. Of course some desease or anything like malnutrition could get a woman to have short or little hair but I suppose there is always something to cut!
It is like in orthodox baptism. The priest is to cut a small part of the baby's hair. Of course not all babies have hair but there is always at least a little bit to cut

Actually, the Benedictine part is correct. When Saint Clare of Assisi decided to become the first female follower of Saint Francis, Francis and his brothers had nowhere to house her at first....they were still in the process of building the cloister at San Damiano....so they decided to temporarily put Clare in a nearby community of Benedictine Nuns until Clare and her sisters could move into San Damiano and start their own order.

She is being received into the Franciscan community as the first female follower of Saint Francis, but the cloister of San Damiano was still under construction so Francis decided to temporarily place Clare and the sisters who followed her with a local community of Benedictine nuns until Clare and her “Poor Ladies” (the term “Poor Clare” wasn’t used until at least a century later) could move into their own cloister at San Damiano. You would not call it that if you understand the meaning. When a young girl enters the Convent she does so to give herself to Christ in a special way. To be His Bride! A woman's greatest glory and beauty is her hair. To cut it is to show complete renouncement of oneself. It is beautiful if thought of like that. I am planing to enter the Convent myself soon, and though I love my long hair I will gladly sacrifice it for Jesus.

And yet it is God's Word that says a woman's long hair has been given as a glory unto her. The Catholic Church has nothing to do with Yahweh or His commandments.
