When Saint Clare of Assisi decided to become the first female follower of Saint Francis, Francis and his brothers had nowhere to house her at first....they were still in the process of building the cloister at San Damiano....so they decided to temporarily put Clare in a nearby community of Benedictine Nuns until Clare and her sisters could move into San Damiano and start their own order.

Nuns cut their hair to enter the convent and then always cover it with a veil. Hence, you never see their hair.
