Long ago, before there was public education, the only way for a girl to get education was in convents boarding schools. Usually, all girls ended with a mid-ear bob-cut and a very short fringe, and "discipline" would be seen as sadism today, although, not all: education was very expensive in these places, thus, girls could get free education, including food, homing, etc: they had to pronounce temporary vows, therefore had a status of novice nuns, they had to help the nuns in their tasks, kept on wearing the school's uniform instead of the regular nuns outfit, unlike usual novices, but got the same haircut as the nuns/novices and had other schoolgirls under their orders, which is interesting as the rich girls had to obey to the poor ones.
