Triggered. My great-great grandfather was born a free man of Mulatto color in 1852 and married a Scottish White woman. When Mrs. Coy stepped into the camera I began to feel tearful and choked up a bit because she looks so much like my great grandmother. Thank you Miss Lainey and Kevin for showcasing this American Treasure. Thank you Mr/Mrs Coy for all taking us on a trip back in time and then some. I ached to see photos or paintings of the Robert Smith family, but I guess that all moved to South America with the widow Smith.
So enjoyed hearing the history of this lovely home. I appreciate the word that Jim used “stewards.” We are stewards of all that God has given to us, and caring for what He has given us really shows our character and thanksgiving to Him. My husband and I were missionaries in Chile for three years. We lived in Santiago for one year and eight south for two years. Cherished times and we have “family” who adopted us as theirs, as well. So appreciate, Laine, you and Kevin’s very hard labors that you do. You both are appreciated for your love of these historic treasures.💛💛
You can tell that Mr. Smith spent time in New Orleans. In addition to the Greek Revival influences, Louisiana French Creole architecture abounds, especially in the wrought-iron details on the front porch and the spaces surrounding the courtyard. Fascinating architecture. Fascinating history. Bravo, Mr. Smith. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Coy.
Really enjoyed the history of the home and how beautiful it is. Thank you for inviting us. I saw a cat towards the end of the video that looked like it might need help. Maybe it was just the angle of the camera but if not please have someone check on the cat. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this historic gem with us. Jim and Ruthie Coy are to be commended for their tireless efforts in maintaining this important piece of Natchez history so beautifully. The love they have for their home is abundantly clear. I once worked at Longwood and although I was aware of Julia Nutt's childhood home Ashburn, I had no idea any of its contents survived until I watched this video. How exciting! This was indeed a treat to watch!
I absolutely love this house....oh my goodness look at that beautiful outdoor living space and courtyard!!!!! Oh my how lovely and the story of its original owner makes this place so unique and one of kind. Truly a special place. Wonderful....God bless
Incredible. I was not expecting that story from this southern old White gentleman. Thank you for sharing Robert Smith's story and preserving his incredible legacy!
Thank you, Laine and Kevin, for another wonderful tour! It’s too late for us to schedule a trip down to Natchez this year. We can begin planning for the next Pilgrimage! Thank you to Jim and Ruthie for a peek at their lovely home.🌸
How wonderful, it's good to see fellow Kentuckians living such a rich life. Bontura is just dripping with history. It has a museum feel but homey also, warm and inviting, Jim and Ruthie prepared a welcoming visit, enjoyed it so much, thanks Laine and Kevin.
I love this story of success! My husband's name was Robert Smith. He died 12+ years ago but it made me smile. No relation but oh what a lovely home! Thank you Jim & Ruthie💕💕💕
Thank you so much for introducing us to Jim and Ruthie and for taking us on a tour of their beautiful home with them. Ruthie exudes Southern Hospitality and I could listen to Jim relay historical facts to us for hours!!!
Absolutely wonderful narration by the (in their words) custodians of this lovely wonderfully furnished home. The History just adds volumes to the experience They are to be commended on so many levels. I can relate as although my story is so young compared to this property. During the 1930s/1940s in a small rural community in New Zealand my father broke in some bushland and turned it into a sheep/ dairy farm he lived in a canvas tent for many years (actually the local community hall now stands on that site) while taming the land. He eventually built a quite fancy but still modest 3 bedroom home from timber about 500 Meters from the campsite on a hilly rise which when the house was finished would over look a good portion of the farm and milking shed which he also built. The farm was sold after his death in 1974 and has changed hands a few times since. I was able to travel back to NZ last year and on the off chance called in to the house as from the road it had under gone some major re construction. But the core house appeared to be still intact. Upon explaining who I was and telling of the history of the farm and house asked if any of the original remained? The new owner kindly allowed me to see inside I found the core almost intact a wall had been removed to enlarge the kitchen and combine it with the family room a porch way had been walled in so the laundry was made internal. the guest lounge/parlour was almost original bedrooms had been modified to add built in wardrobes rooms were very large to start with and had way more windows than was usual for that time foresight by my father perhaps. but to see the original hand carved ceiling rose’s and scotia brouht back such a happy smile that these and other touches were left intact after passing from our hands. The house will live on for many a year yet and dads skills have left something tang-able and worthwhile behind. A little sad to think when i pass a piece of local history will be lost but since i don’t have a complete family history timeline its not feasible to record. Love this channel and the homes you show 👍
This is glorious! Please extend my appreciation to Dr. Jim and Ruthie for this fabulous tour and maintaining the integrity of this beautiful home as its stewards.
The courtyard contains two of the largest unmolested and oldest crapemyrtles I have ever seen! They are quite significant. Appreciate you sharing the unique history of this handsome home.
What a treat to see this lovely home! Thank you to the Coys for allowing us to see your beautiful historic home. I enjoyed the stories and the tour. I look forward to seeing Bontura during spring pilgrimage. Thank you Laine& Kevin for another great historic home tour.
What a great tour. I can see how you love Mr Jim and Mrs Ruthie. They seem like they are sweet, hospitable folks. Interesting history of both the home and their families. What a treasure trove Natchez must be.
Extremely interesting history on this lovely estate, and family history as well. If walls could talk. Loving the portraits of Ruthie's Great Great Grandfather sea captain and his history. What an amazing family bloodline and beautiful family. Perfect couple to inhabit and maintain this unique historical landmark. Such a gracious couple. Furnishings are exquisite.
I love the detailed views of some of the historical features of these beautiful houses. I’d also like to see the attics, basements, carriage houses, etc. the out of the way parts that are rarely shown in real estate listings or other types of videos.
I am completely awed, mesmerized, and astounded by what I've learned, seen, and experienced today! We learned about Robert D. Smith and other free men of color who were successful businessmen and/or slave owners back in Junior High School. I never thought that I would get a chance to actually tour Mr. Smith's home; but Laine, you, Kevin, Jim, and Ruthie made that possible! It is so amazing how history in one place can become connected to history in another through marriages, furnishings, portraits, and folklore. I was amazed at how the furnishing currently in Jim's and Ruthie's home represents the true history in other antebellum homes such as Longwood Mansion and others. Wow! Exploring the rooms and exterior garden of this beautiful home was indeed a sincere pleasure. You clearly can see the pride and love Jim and Ruthie hold for this house; they are gracious "stewards" who've made this house a beautiful, tranquil, and serene abode. They did an excellent job sharing it's history. Please convey to them my sincere thanks and appreciation for a job well done. A big thank you goes to you, Laine, and Kevin for once again opening the doors to a wonderful historic house with an enchanting history! You both are awesome! Til the next time......
Thank you so much for sharing this home! This may be my favorite yet. What a history. And Jim is such a natural. What awesome caregivers the house has. ❤️
I am so happy you met Jim and Ruthie and have become friends. They are so hospitable. I am from Natchez. I enjoyed “receiving” (tour guide) at Greenleaves, Bontura, and many other Antebellum homes. Bontura is different. Love the story. Thank you so much for this beautiful video.
Another fabulous episode! What a unique history this home has, being built by a free person of color before the Civil War. It has been beautifully maintained and is a tribute to its builder and to all the many owners who have owned it since.
Dr. Coy is a natural storyteller, loved the story and could listen to him all day. I was a little confused at first with the addons to the house (didn't read the description before I watched) but eventually Mrs. Coy cleared up that it was a boarding house. I'm assuming it is now all just a private residence and not an inn so would have loved to have known what they are doing with all the boarding house part, I'm assuming they have converted and live in some of it.
i was pleased to hear the story of robert smith and his success. how lucky we are that the coy's have kept and maintained the furniture that was passed down through the generations as well as been great stewards of bontura
That lady did a great job narrating. Instead of the camera focusing on her all the time, they focused on the house and showed the complete room instead of jumping around. Good job❤
Such a great warm and gorgeous home. I loved hearing the history and found both Dr. And Mrs. Coy very charming and enjoyed their delightful house tour.
It's a beautiful home, and the family furnishings and photos make it even more so. Jim and Ruthie are excellent stewards of the home and of their family treasures. Compliments also to Jim for his jaw harp mastery.
What a totally fascinating and wonderful story, I loved every minute. Thank you to the hosts and to restoration nation for taking me there. Loving it from Australia ❤️
What a great story. Thanks to them for opening their bone. Would like to know more about the details and structure. Perhaps they’ll let Laine talk about that next time.
I love this house and the furniture. This exactly how I like the walls. White and with the original moldings. I do love the wood to be dark stained I would not paint the moldings and doors. How ever if it is already painted I love the house to be painted white. The dark stained furniture is beautiful and because the walls are white they pop.
I loved this beautiful tour and history. Please thank Jim and Ruthie Coy for the lovely tour and history lesson. They are doing a fabulous job as caretakers.
Once again, you guys found an amazing home to share! I was very intrigued by the story about the man who built this home.. what an interesting and wonderful story! Thank you so much to the owners, Jim and Ruthie, for taking us on this wonderful tour and showing us your families much treasured possessions. You must have some wonderful memories. Thank you Laine and Kevin-- you guys rock! Had I been aware of it, I would have planned to do the "Pilgrimage" event... next time for sure!
Lovely for you to mention that it is February starting of spring in your area. In my area south eastern Wisconsin. We are expecting 6 inches of snow today February 16, 2023 which includes the Milwaukee area. Wish I was able to plant flowers at this time. Anyway, I love your series.
Thank you Jim and Ruthie for being stewards of this wonderful piece of history. What a delightful experience for us to see it and hear some of it's story.
What a magnificent home with an inspiring history. Gosh I'd be scared to touch anything. It's like a museum, with each piece having it's own story to tell. Thank you for sharing.
What a wonderful story of adventure and survival truly fascinating. And what a beautiful house.. I’m so happy that you have so many family Momentos stories to go along with them. Super awesome story. Thank you for sharing.👏👏👏❤️

It's amazing that the owners of this beautiful historic home have so many family heirlooms to showcase in an appropriate showplace. My family broke so many items that there was nothing to pass on! People from Kentucky just are so down to earth and classy without being overly in your face. Enjoyed Mr Jim and Mrs Ruthie

You're are absolutely, darling, I enjoy your tours so much! Thanks for what you do.
As a lifelong Kentuckian, I found Jim & Ruthie quite charming. I'm "only" in my late 30s, but I've always been enchanted by historic homes & fascinated by anything remotely old fashioned. I'm like a sponge when I listen to my elders speak. Needless to say American History was always my favorite subject in school. It was a joy to the hear the story of this home, & to take a look inside. The content of this channel is top notch! You've shown so many stunning properties that stir the imagination. I'm just heartbroken I can't afford to own one myself. Never say never, right...
It's amazing that the owners of this beautiful historic home have so many family heirlooms to showcase in an appropriate showplace. My family broke so many items that there was nothing to pass on! Even if I had a family of "pack rats," no one wanted hand me downs. Plus, everyone had different tastes and wanted different things. 😀
That was delightful! Adding a trip the Southern US in the spring to the “things I am going to do when I retire” list.
Thank you Jim and Ruthie for sharing your wonderful home with us. What a great story!
Oh my gosh, I love them! Y’all need your own TH-cam channel!
Loved hearing you tell the story of Mr. And Mrs. Smith’s home❤️
